What's to Eat? The Milk-Free, Egg-Free, Nut-Free Food Allergy Cookbook ASIN: 0970278500
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Super!
Comments: If you or your child(ren) have food allergies, you MUST have this cookbook! When we realized my daughter (at the time, 13 months old) was allergic to dairy and eggs it was difficult to get used to the idea of having to cook without dairy products especially. Ms. Coss' book has many recipes that are delicious and healthy as well. My biggest concern was to be able to provide meals which were healthy and nutritionally sound and many of the recipes in this book are just that. My child, now 18 months old is growing beautifully being fed many meals via recipes from this cookbook. It is easy to follow, and once you do your preliminary "major grocery-shopping" trip to get a lot of the spices and basic ingredients, you can really make almost anything at any time. Cooking allergy free has actually become enjoyable for me as so many of the recipes from this book seem to have become classics in our house. Everyone loves them and it makes me feel good to be able to provide my child with foods from this book that bring us all a sense of normalcy.

Allergy: Principles and Practice, 2-Volume Set ASIN: 0815100728
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: A must have book for allergists
Comments: A reference book for allergists and anyone training or practicing as an allergy-immunology subspecialist. It is an extensive and comprehensive review of allergic diseases. I found specially useful the tables and boxes which summarizes the very essential in one shot. It includes practical applications for daily practice problems. One con: It comes very short on drug allergy.

The Yeast Connection: A Medical Breakthrough ASIN: 0394747003
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: My Fatigue Explained
Comments: If you or someone you know suffers from fatigue, please buy this book. If you know of a child who is autistic or hyper or has learning problems, please buy this book for their parents. Dr. Crook's treatment program is a recommendation of a medicine from a doctor, along with watching what you eat, and other simple measures. Dr. Crook presented an excellent book, full of resources, actual patient scenarios, and changes to implement immediately. The book can be passed on to anyone's doctor easily because Dr. Crook explains that he himself is a doctor and states how he became involved treating yeast. He explains the symptoms of yeast overgrowth in the body, it's causes, and it's cures. The book gives so many cases of patients that it's easier to see how one patient's symptoms may differ from another's - but be related to your specific problem. I was diagnosed with Epstein-Barr virus and was told by my doctor that only my symptoms could be treated. Epstein-Barr is related to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and I have strugged with tiredness for years. This book has so helped me. I bought it on a Friday and am buying it Monday to take to my doctor. I am a born-again Christian and this book is an answer to my prayer. Please buy it for anyone you know who has suffered with Chronic Fatigue.

Sinus Survival: The Holistic Medical Treatment for Sinusitis, Allergies, and Colds ASIN: 1585420581
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Better than surgery
Comments: Bought this book last week. After six months of not being able to smell or taste, and having ears plugging up, I am feeling a bit better. I have intermittent episodes of smelling/tasting in only a week. Yes, I have done acupuncture, chinese herbs and naturopathy. My energy level is up a couple of notches (thanks, kukicha tea), I can sorta keep up with my babies. For me the candida/fungus link is absolutely there. So just following the diet and taking some supplements is a start to getting better! YEAH! p.s. I did find a positive "I AM" getting better attitude helps.

My House Is Killing Me! The Home Guide for Families With Allergies and Asthma ASIN: 0801867304
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Just the beginning
Comments: This is one of the best of the books on detoxifying your home. It goes into the level of detail most people need to really figure out what to do. It's on a par with some of the best Web sites on the subject (i.e. greenhome.com, et al). And it gets its info right. I should know, as I've read almost all the similar books in my efforts to detoxify my home, including the first (and still one of the best): Linda Mason Hunter's Healthy Home. So I would get this book, as it is a great way to learn about the tools for the coming Renaissance in simple and natural living. Mssrs. May and Samet have really done a nice job in moving the ball forward. Kudos!

Say Good-Bye to Illness ASIN: 0970434480
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: An excellent guide to good health
Comments: This third edition of this book is lot better than the first edition. It captivated my attention and I read it from cover to cover in couple of days (in spite of my busy schedule). I really liked its contents and also the way it is organized. It definitely is a great book to purchase and read. If you are like me, tired and scared of hearing the side effects of the traditional medicine, NAET is the way to go and this book says it all. The first 1 to 5 chapters help us to learn the importance of eliminating the nerve energy blockage, which causes various illnesses. In chapter 6 she has given a good example to explain how we can remove the cause of blockage. In chapter 7 she has given the reader a way to test our own allergy or at least narrow down what could have caused the problem for our allergic reaction and take action, either by treating it ourselves or seeking the help of a professional NAET practitioner. Throughout the book she has given several examples of symptoms, what caused it and how it could be eliminated. She has given several testimonials to give the reader the effectiveness of the treatment. Chapter 18, describes how emotions play an important part in our health. It is so true! Chapter 13 is very informative on supplements that we take. I was so amazed to realize how ignorant I was in taking supplements without knowing how it reacts with the body. Every chapter in this book has given me valuable information regarding health related problems and how it can be overcome. Over all this book (the Third Edition) is like a 'bible', you can carry it with you and refer to it to check back the cause of an illness or a physical pain and narrow down what could have caused it and then take care of it (nip it in the bud). This is an excellent reference book for people who don't want to pump toxin into their body but on the other hand want to eliminate it before it does severe damage. The Author's theory of eliminating the toxin that blocks the energy circulation is well explained in this book. I like to think of it as yet another example: when our zinc gets all plugged up and water does not drain off easily, the zinc soon gets an overflow of water which runs off on the floor and damages the beautiful flooring or the rug. Then we have to bring in the roto-rooter who clears the blockage. The water then starts flowing down easily and it eliminates the overflow problem. Of course, sometimes, if we wait too long to call the roto-rooter, the damage the water blockage does may not be completely repairable unless we spent more time and money to fix the aftermath (side effects of overflow). Get the drift?
Just like you do your daily chores (brush your teeth, remove plaque and tarter from it, bathe your body, eat your meals, clean your house and surroundings, etc.) taking care of your mental and physical fitness is also important. You don't brush your teeth or take a bath one day and say that you don't have to bathe yourself anymore or brush your teeth any more. Your teeth will accumulate plaque or tarter and get dirty or decay for which you have to brush everyday and you have to go to the dentist regularly. Just because you took a bath one day does not mean that your body will not sweat or get dirty the next day. As it gets dirty, you have to wash it and keep it clean. Similarly, your health also has to be taken care of on a regular basis; a daily chore. NAET treatment is a way to do it, painlessly, without any harmful drugs and its side effects. This book explains it clearly.

The False Fat Diet: The Revolutionary 21-Day Program for Losing the Weight You Think Is Fat ASIN: B00006F7J0
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: False Fat Diet - trying it out
Comments: Well, yet another diet book but I think this one has some good ideas - at least that I have found useful. Finding out what food sensitivities and allergies for an individual are addressed in this book by trying one of 5 types of elimination diets and then one-by-one re-introducing the foods you regularly eat. The books covers what are the most reactive and least reactive foods and how eating reactive foods can hold extra weight and cause many health problems. It certainly is a book to check out if you are at a loss about some health/weight related issues. I'm in the second phase of my 21 days of the diet and feeling good so far.

The Gluten-Free Kitchen: Over 135 Delicious Recipes for People with Gluten Intolerance or Wheat Allergy ASIN: 0761522727
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Pretty good for gluten-free
Comments: The gluten-free diet can make one's life frustrating. This book's recipes are simple. Only a couple recipes needed tweaking, but for the most part they are fine. If you do not like the rice flour taste this is the book for you. The breads do not rise well, but the taste is where it is. Also, her dough is very fragile and can be difficult to handle at first. The products, except the potato starch, are at local grocery stores. My favorite recipes were the snicker doodles (don't add the 2T of water, too runny), the biscuits (at little flat, but taste just like regular biscuits), and the pumpkin pie (the pie dough was okay, but the filling was yummy). The food does not have a very long shelf life. The day after I made the delicious apple muffins they tasted completely different, and I threw them out. You should buy this book. In fact, I bought two, because I'm not the celiac. It's my mom.

Why Can't My Child Behave?: Why Can't She Cope? Why Can't He Learn? ASIN: 0965110508
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Amazing! Thank you - It was a prayer answered!
Comments: The author must have been peeking through my window while writing this book! It was amazing; she described my child to a T. I had to try the diet. What did I have to lose, but a lot of stress, behavior problems and many hours spent on disciplining. Within the first week I saw a difference and in the second week I saw a new person! Thank you Jane Hersey for sending this "Gift from God" my way!

Food Allergy Field Guide : A Lifestyle Manual for Families ASIN: 1889374075
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Help your child
Comments: I have just finished reading the "Food Allergy Field Guide," A lifestyle manual for families, by Theresa Willingham. I want to let everyone know that if they have a child that is not eating well, or that has growth symptoms that do not seem to be accurately diagnosed by their family pediatrican or doctor, that they should read this book. It will not only save many lives world-wide, but, more importantly, it will allow a great many of the worlds children grow to become healthy, productive young citizens of our country. Ms. Willingham has done an outstanding job of bringing Celiac Disease to our attention. I'd never heard of gluten sensitivity until I read this book, and I am so glad that I did. Congratulations to the author!

Allergy Cooking With Ease: The No Wheat, Milk, Eggs, Corn, Soy, Yeast, Sugar, Grain, and Gluten Cookbook ASIN: 091498442X
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: The most COMPLETE recipe book for multiple allergies
Comments: This book offers so many recipes and substitutes that are near-perfect for those with multiple allergies. I have a child who is allergic to 60 foods - including wheat (and most other grains), sugar, tomatoes, eggs, corn and many more common foods and spices. Other books offer great recipes, but often contain an allergen that I don't know how (or there isn't) a substitute for. If you have only one or two common allergies, you can probably find a book that has great-tasting recipes (and more commonly-found ingredients) that are free of your allergen. But for a child with multiple food allergies - this book has made living with food allergies an easier part of everyday life by offering recipes with similar taste and appearance to what everyone else is eating.

The Allergy Solution for Dogs: Natural and Conventionale Therapies to Ease Discomfort and Enhance Your Dog's Quality of Life (Messonnier, Shawn. Natural Vet.) ASIN: 0761526722
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: The Allergy Solution for Dogs
Comments: I write MacAnswers, a question/answer column for Great Scots Magazine, a publication for Scottish Terrier owners. The question I wanted to tackle for the September/October issue was about allergies. However, I was tempted to put that subject on the back burner since entire books can be written on allergies in dogs and how to control them. Fortunately, I found Dr. Messonnier's book The Allergy Solution for Dogs. This new book does indeed provide the solution for dog owners who are willing to invest more time and interest in solving their dog's discomfort than a monthly trip to the vet for a steroid injection. Dr. Messonnier's holistic approach to allergies makes sense, and I highly recommend this book to any dog owner who is dealing with the frustrations of a dog that itches and itches. Breeds the book lists which have an especially high incidence of atopic dermatitis, a genetic disease which predisposes dogs to skin allergies are: West Highland White Terriers, Cairn Terriers, Shar-peis, Scottish Terriers, Lhasa Apsos, Shih Tzus, Wirehaired Fox Terriers, Dalmatians, Pugs, Irish Setters, Boston Terriers, Golden Retrievers, Boxers, English Setters, Labrador Retrievers, Miniature Schnauzers and Belgian Tervurens.

Winning the War Against Immune Disorders and Allergies: A Drug Free Cure for Allergies ASIN: 0766800598
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Excellent
Comments: A highly intelligent overview of many illness that are directly or indirectly connected to allergies. What struck me most was the way the author shows a truly deep understanding of the complex causes of each illness and yet offers meaningful treatment options. It should be noted that the book is primarily intended as an introduction (though it goes further than any introduction) to using NAET - a particular type of allergy desensitisation. NAET is quite revolutionary in its approach and the combination of insight into disease and intelligent treatment options makes this book a winner for anyone with immune disorders. So much more sophisticated (though easy to understand) than the vast majority of books on immune disorders/allergies out there.

Lick the Sugar Habit ASIN: 089529768X
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: This Book Can Inspire You!
Comments: This book is more than just about sugar and mineral imbalance. So what if she is not a doctor? A PhD is useless? You don't have to study medicine to read reports in medical journals about the effects of refined sugar on your health. One reviewer complains about the subject of pollution not being in her book. Why? The book is about sugar, not pollution.

Is This Your Child?: Discovering and Treating Unrecognized Allergies in Children and Adults ASIN: 0688119077
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: A Must Have For Parents of Allergic Children
Comments: This book helped me recognize my son's allergies, which doctors were ignoring. It also helped me find an allergist that has been successfully treating my son. Dr. Rapp explains what allergies are, how to recognize them, how they can manifest themselves in a child's body, what is involved with allergy testing and treatment, and what parents can do to help alleviate or eliminate allergens in a child's diet and environment. This is my "bible" for my child's allergies. Within 50 pages of reading, I was saying "This is my child. This is what is wrong with him." The case histories that Dr. Rapp includes in the book are very helpful and comforting; it was nice to know that there were other children like my son. I highly recommend this book to everyone with children.

The Food Allergy Cure: A New Solution to Food Cravings, Obesity, Depression, Headaches, Arthritis, and Fatigue ASIN: 0609606395
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: An Effective Method to Get Rid of Allergies and Autoimmunity
Comments: I had fifteen allergies to things like eggs, wheat, soy, rice, strawberries, etc. and my diet had shrunk to very few foods. But this method got rid of all of them! Also, I have had an autoimmune disease since I was 21 (long time ago) and this method got rid of that permanently. I have not taken a single pain pill or anti-inflammatory drug for that condition since. Because there are over 80 auto-immune diseases, including things like endometriosis, Chron's disease, fibromyalgia, ankylozing spondalitis, etc., the ability to get rid of the "short circuit" in your system that causes part of your system to regard and attack another as the "enemy" is fantastic! I first learned the basic technique in a workshop. We were all given vials of "mosquito" to work with. I know of few people who do not react to a mosquito bite. Shortly after that we went to our son's cabin in the deep woods on a lake in Northern Wisconsin, where mosquitoes are the "state bird." I never put on any mosquito repellant and I did not get bitten one single time even though all the others did. I heard some and I even saw a mosquito come down, fly back and forth about a half inch above my hand and fly away! Two words of caution: the food allergy method works right away, but there are some foods like wheat which are so inherantly allergenic, that even after the treatment, it is wise to stay away from that food; also, taking away autoimmunity simply gets rid of the principal cause, but it takes quite a while for all the symptoms to subside. But they do!

The Parent's Guide to Food Allergies: Clear and Complete Advice from the Experts on Raising Your Food Allergic Child ASIN: 0805066004
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: The Parent's Guide to Food Allergies
Comments: If you have a child with severe food allergies, this book is like a bible. I just finished reading it and found it to be very educational. I would highly recommend this book to anyone seeking not only information about how to diagnose, treat and manage a food allergy, but to anyone who feels overwhelmed and discouraged by their child's allergies and medical conditions that result. I cried many times while reading this book because I felt like someone finally understands the range of emotions a parent goes through when dealing with their child's severe food allergies.

The Peanut Allergy Answer Book ASIN: 1931412588
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Very Informative
Comments: I highly reccomend this book to any parent who has a child with peanut allergies. It is an extremely informative book. Dr. Young does not use medical terms that are hard for the layperson to understand. He also provides other resources which are invaluable. I liked the way he gave situations and how they were either resolved or should have been resolved. He anwered all you could/would ever want to know about peanut allergies. Dr. Young has been treating my son for his peanut allergies (as well as other allergies) for the past few years, so i personally know how well informed this Dr. is. Thank you, Dr. Young!

Allergies and Asthma For Dummies ASIN: 076455218X
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: If you have allergies, you need this book!
Comments: I got this book about two weeks after my 9-year-old son suffered his first asthma attack. After reading it, I feel much better prepared to cope with his condition. The author's tone is reassuring without being condescending. And there is an enormous amount of information, everything from how to choose a specialist to charts describing the effects and usual dosages of the most common medications. Since I have been suffering from allergies and sinus problems myself this spring, it was especially useful. I think this might be the best investment in our family's health I ever made!

The Complete Food Allergy Cookbook: The Foods You'Ve Always Loved Without the Ingredients You Can't Have ASIN: 0761509615
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: Review
Comments: I thought this book had some good recipes, however, I found that it was not appropriate for the food allergies that my son has. Some of the recipes have soy, egg or nut in them and all of these I must avoid for my son. If you are able to have these items then you may enjoy this book, however, if you are looking for a cookbook that offers alternatives to these allergens then you are better off seeking out another book.

Comments: I am the mother of 6 children, 2 of those children have problems with their weight, after trying so many different styles we finally realized that the main culpert was the food allergies. Food Allergies: The Complete Guide to Understanding and Relieving Your Food Allergies ASIN: 047138268X
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Now it all begins to make sense
Comments: This book is practically an encyclopedia of food allergies written for ordinary people. The author is a physician and allergy specialist with almost 40 years of experience in the field. He describes how in the beginning of his career, he had not been trained to recognize food allergies in his patients, but over the years, he became more and more sensitized to the kinds of symptoms that food allergies can cause. Over time, he noted that many of his patients were allergic to the same common foods, especially what he calls the MALS foods, MSG, acidic foods, low calorie sweeteners, and sugar. The skin tests that are so much relied on for detecting environmental allergies are less informative with food allergies. In response, he has developed a method for identifying food allergies that uses a diet that eliminates common allergy causing foods and then gradually re-introduces them while the patient notes when the symptoms lessen or begin to reoccur. This diet is described in the book, together with possible rotation menus and lists of additional foods that cause problems for some people and may need to be avoided. If you try to read this book from cover-to-cover, you will find that it is rather repetitive at times, and the organization seems in some places to be more stream-of-consciousness rather than logical. At times the avoidance of technical language or explanations seems almost evasive, and it's amazing how a doctor could write an entire book about allergies without once using the word histamine. Since the book is addressed to general readers, it does not contain in-text references to scientific studies. Nevertheless, the bibliography is replete with such references, adding credence to Walsh's message. This book confirmed many of the phenomena that I had observed about my own food sensitivities. For example, Walsh explains that allergies are additive, so that's why I can pet a cat so long as it's not hay fever season, or I can drink a small glass of milk now and then, but not a big glass every day. Walsh also suggests that readers should trust their instincts- -if they have a strong feeling that a food is making them sick, there is a good chance that it really is. After reading this book, there is no longer any question in my mind- -food can make you sick, and you can feel a lot better once you figure out what you've been eating that is causing you trouble.

The Peanut Butter Jam ASIN: 092917335X
Customer's Rating: 1 Summary: well intentioned, but stigma enforcing all the same
Comments: Bless the mother who takes the time to write a book to educate the world on life threatening, anaphylactic, nut allergies. That's got to be an endeavor worth praise. However, this book reinforces too many of the behavior's which gets these kids into the emergency room in the first place. Education, advocacy, and education - coupled with complete peanut avoidance - and overall compassion, is missing here. It's more of a trial by fire, and we're lucky Sam was still with us after the anaphylactic reaction - many kids are not as fortunate. It doesn't teach the public at large, true compassion and a willingness to abstain from peanut products *completely* in order to save a life. Until that is understood -- these kids are at risk in these facilities.

Allie the Allergic Elephant : A Children's Story of Peanut Allergies ASIN: 1586280503
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: Mixed Feelings
Comments: The text and pictures of this book are great for young kids. I was very bothered, however, by the statement that Allie "likes to eat peanuts" like the other elephants. Better, I think, if the author had said she "wishes she could". Also, this is a paperback book, and not very sturdy. Our copy started falling apart after only a few readings. I think the price is a bit too high for the quality.

No More Allergies: Identifying and Eliminating Allergies and Sensitivity Reactions to Everything in Your Environment ASIN: 0679743103
Customer's Rating: 2 Summary: Promises Much But Delivers Little
Comments: This book attempts to be thoroughly comprehensive but ultimately fails because often some vital information is missing. I believe that health books which really empower are ones which give real, useable answers, not vague outlines. For instance, Mr Null does not tell me where to get the vital allergy tests done, what they cost, what they involve or which laboratorys/methods he recommends. He refers to these tests numerous times as providing part of the answer, but I am left feeling that I have a vague idea of the problem, but a wholly inadequate idea of the solution. Mr Null is NOT an allergy expert and it shows. The book is not completely useless, but my advice is to look elsewhere for help.

Dairy-Free Cookbook, Fully Revised 2nd Edition : Over 250 Recipes for People with Lactose Intolerance or Milk Allergy ASIN: 0761514678
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: great if you love milk, but someone you love can't have it
Comments: my boyfriend of 2 years is lactose intolerant, and I love milk, cheese, creamy soups, butter, basically everything he CAN'T eat. as we've become more health/money concious, and I've been cooking at home almost every night, this became a dilema. enter Jane Zukin's book. it's a lactose - intolerance reference guide and a bunch of great recipes in one. the section on hidden sources of lactose and careful label reading was particularly enlightning (who would have thought plain pre-processed bread crumbs had lactose ingredients?), as was the section on fast foods. now I'll be a lot more comfortable eating at Burger King with him. the substitution suggestions are also helpful, and conveniently located in an easy to use table. but the main thing I love about this book are the recipes! so far they have all been clearly explained, easy to make, and delicious. I love the fact that nutritional information is included with each one (be aware that her portion sizes were a lot smaller then mine, but I DO cook for 3 college boys on a regular basis). as an example - her vegetable linguine. my boyfriend begs me to add meat when I tell him I'm making it for dinner, so I give in and add shrimp to it. when we sit down to dinner, after all 8 servings are devoured, he says, that was great, and it really didn't need meat at all. first time he's EVER indicated a recipe would be better WITHOUT meat! that alone would put it on my list of things to serve often, even it weren't one of the most fabulous tasting recipes I've ever found. the only criticism I have is that so many of the recipes rely on "milk - substitute", "soy-cheese-substitute" or "milk-free-margerine". but it does keep me thinking about it as I prepare a complete meal. definately buy this if you or someone you love is lactose intolerant. it will become one of your most frequently used resources and recipe books.

Allergy-Free Gardening: The Revolutionary Guide to Healthy Landscaping ASIN: 1580082009
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: I really love this book!
Comments: I've read this book over and over again, and every time I find something new. I have bad allergies and serious asthma and I need to have all the facts. Allergy-Free Gardening by Thomas Ogren is full of facts, full of important material you really can't find anywhere else. I read everything I can get my hands on about allergies and I like to garden too, so this book is perfect for me. I like the way everything is arranged in the book, very easy to use. The plants are all allergy ranked on a one to ten scale (where one is best and ten is worst) and this makes plant selection clear and simple. Ogren's writing is excellent, always interesting and cleanly expressed. Many years of research went into the writing of this fine reference book, and it shows. The book covers a very wide range of landscape and garden plants, and includes plants from the tropics to Alaska. All the plants are climate zone ranked, cultural garden tips are given freely, and there is much advice on how to find actual allergy-free plants. These allergy-free plants, it turns out, are usually female plants, since they don't produce pollen. There are pollen-free trees, bushes, vines, flowers, and even lawns. The exact names of the best plants are all in this neat book and when I go to the nursery I always take my copy with me. One of the best books I own!

The Allergy Self-Help Cookbook: Over 325 Natural Food Recipes, Free of All Common Food Allergens ASIN: 157954276X
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Will always have a place in my kitchen
Comments: This book needs to be in your kitchen if any of the following apply to you:
-you are vegan,
-someone in your family has food allergies,
-you are vegetarian and want to include more vegan recipes in your diet, or
-you enjoy baking but cringe at the amount of butter and sugar in most recipes
Author Jones was diagnosed with food allergies in 1976. She defines a food "allergy" as the following experience: "eating a food causes you distress, or if you discover any clear cause-and-effect symptoms that are relieved by avoidance of specific foods."
Her completely updated and revised cookbook includes over 350 recipes. Each is free of all common food allergens. No more getting halfway through a recipe only to realize that it would have been gluten-free if only you had used the other flour option. There are also chapters on ingredients that may be new to you, rotary diversified diets, keeping your home allergy-free, eating out, and helping children with allergies. Note that this is not a vegetarian cookbook. However, a majority of the recipes are vegan. There are 17 vegetarian main dishes, and several of these have become instant hits at my house. The Better Burgers are the greatest. For Thanksgiving, I served the Zesty Loaf for the first time and an hour later, the loaf was gone, and my sisters-in-law were begging for the recipe. We have also grown quite fond of the Fresh Apple Muffins. They will be going with us to our La Leche League meeting this month. And I'm willing to bet that none of them will be making the return trip home. The only recipe that hasn't turned out well was the Date Pecan Pie. Too much blackstrap molasses makes things taste like cough syrup. My only complaint with the book is that quite a few of the baked goods call for white buckwheat flour or a combination of flours. While the author explains how to grind whole buckwheat groats in the blender, I find that to be too time consuming. With a preschooler and baby around, I don't have time to grind my own flour. I have the same issue with the combination of flours used in some recipes. It takes extra time to get out and measure three different flours. However, as one who eats a vegan diet in the comfort of my own home, I have to say that I love allergy-free cookbooks: no dairy, no eggs, and all-natural sugars. As a fine example of a cookbook that fits this bill, The Allergy Self-Help Cookbook will always have a place in my kitchen. --Reviewed by Virginia Delaney

5 Years Without Food: The Food Allergy Survival Guide: How to Overcome Your Food Allergies and Recover Good Health ASIN: 188762404X
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: always check with your allergist
Comments: This is a good book for people with food allergies to read. However, people with very severe food allergies should check with an allergic before trying anything new. This book provides good ideas and information but some people will have to be careful. My son has a severe, life-threatening allergy to cow milk protein. Very small amounts of cow milk protein can kill him. The protein in goat's milk is very similar to the protein in cow's milk. I gave my son some goat's milk many years ago and it almost killed him. His allergist would never have advised me to give him goat's milk. Many people have food allergys but people vary with regard to how allergic they are. If you have to carry an epi-pen because of a food allergy, that is a sign to be very careful. That said, I still think this book will help people with known food allergies or with illnesses that may be related to eating food(s) that causes an adverse reaction within the body. A book will not replace having an allergist that knows how to test for food allergies. Complete removal of all traces of all types of milk protein from my son's diet has been the only way I've found to keep him safe so far. People suffering from food allergies may want to also read about adding enzymes from live food to their diet as another way to reduce the problems associated with food allergies. I have been studying food allergies for 11 years and there is always more to learn.
