Alpha Lipoic Acid Breakthrough: The Superb Antioxidant That May Slow Aging, Repair Liver Damage, and Reduce the Risk of Cancer, Heart Disease, and Diabetes ASIN: 0761514570
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: The Alpha Lipoic Acid Primer to Reversing Chronic Diseases
Comments: A historical breakthrough; medically rivetting; inspires real hope...these phrases partially describe the seminal work of Dr. Burton Berkson, in his book The Alpha Lipoic Acid Breakthrough. From the "No nonsense, tell it like it is" foreword by Julian Whitaker, M.D.; through the early days of saving the "medically dead" against the insensitive dictates of his chief doctor; to the research journey that ultimately lead to the phenomenal discovery of the efficacy of the life saving properties of this natural cellular substance, Alpha Lipoic Acid; Burt Berkson, M.D.,M.S.,Ph.D., has remarkably woven his twenty plus years of working experience with the National Institutes of Health, the Federal Drug Administration and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention into a wonderful storytelling format that truely gives hope to any potential liver transplant recipiant or patients experiencing any of a number of chronic diseases ie.,diabetes, AIDS, heart disease, cancer, macular degeneration, Alzheimer's and a host of others. Dr. Berkson has taken the seemingly arcane study of biochemistry and has given it a layman's metamorphosis into BC 101. This essential foundation aptly gives the reader a fundamental understanding of such vitally important concepts as "signal transduction" and "transcription factors"; thus giving the reader the same understanding of the machanics of the diseases mentioned as his or her physician has. Armed with this knowledge, a cancer patient (for example) can better understand why the 5 year survival rate of all cancers are between 11 - 17% and therefore may opt for an integrative medical program that will not harm the immune system, but work with it. I sincerely hope that the mainstream media will give Dr. Berkson's book the just attention it rightfully deserves and that every medical school includes it as a primer on the effacacy of Alpha Lipoic Acid, the medicine for the new millennium.

The Antioxidant Miracle: Put Lipoic Acid, Pycogenol, and Vitamins E and C to Work for You ASIN: 0471353116
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Very interesting if it's your first look at antioxidants
Comments: I liked Packer's book. He managed to leave the subject interesting enough for people who are not experienced with antioxidants. I honestly had little clue about it and the book explains things quite well. Of course only an expert can point any serious mistakes in this book and maybe other flaws, but the public in general will like it. After reading the book, I thought it was amazing how people were not taking those antioxidant cocktails, it makes no sense, why not?
Of course, after visiting a few health shops (locally and on the internet) my doubts were cleared. THE PRICE. Buying all supplements separately is outrageously expensive (At least for 24 year old unemployed student like me). Buying the whole pack from Lester will be cheaper, but we're still talking about some considerable $. Of course, the first move is to change your diet and start eating better, then choose the supplements better for you (in all a$pects). Packer does repeat himself a bit, but it makes sense repeating some info in different areas of the book. Overall I liked it...

The Vitamin E Factor : The Miraculous Antioxidant for the Prevention and Treatment of Heart Disease, Cancer, and Aging ASIN: 0060984430
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Great science in plain English
Comments: I love this book. In my job I need technical and reference information. I find it in the Appendix, the sections for "chemistry buffs" and its the many scientific and Internet references. I use the book not only to learn about vitamin E, but also to get background information on nutrition, diet, aging, exercise and many diseases. I find it in plain English and is fun to read, full of real life stories and, something you do not find in health books, real humor.

Alpha Lipoic Acid: Nature's Ultimate Antioxidant ASIN: 157566366X
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: INTERESTING AND INFORMATIVE
Comments: A very informative book about free radicals, anti-oxidants and longevity, focusing on the role of Alpha Lipoic Acid and its use in anti-aging in general, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and in neuroprotection. Other chapters deal with this role of this potent anti-oxidant in inflammatory disorders, HIV, and vision disorders like macular degeneration, cataracts and glaucoma. I found the section on the main free radical culprits and the major protective anti-oxidants very interesting. One can even work out your own anti-oxidant profile in a question-and-answers section. There is a resource guide for buying it as a supplement, a section on questions and answers, a very extensive bibliography and a thorough index.

Regaining The Power Of Youth At Any Age Startling New Evidence From The Doctor Who Brought Us aerobics, Controlling Cholesterol And The Antioxidant Revolution ASIN: 0785271422
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Good suggestions on reducing the ravishes of advancing age
Comments: This books presents basic information anyone can incorporate to try to evade the ravishes of advancing age. Cooper gives recommendations in regards to exercise, stress management, diet, supplements, and related matters that will help people to retain their youthful energy. He also explains that most people have unrealistic expectations on how much their physical abilities will decline with advancing age. Most people tend to think the decline is much more rapid and pronounced than it really is. This is particularly encouraging to me since I just turned 40! His recommendations in regards to exercise include doing aerobic, strength training, and flexibility exercises. It is important for one to do all three kinds of exercises. Doing so will reduce the loss that most people experience in each of these areas. He correctly notes that emotional stress can be as much a drain on one's vitality as poor exercise and diet habits. And as a Christian, I appreciate that he emphasizes that spiritual activities like prayer, Bible study, and attending worship services are ideal ways to deal with stress. In regards to diet, he presents ""bedrock principles" like eating more fruits and vegetables and reducing one's intake of fat. And he correctly points out that trans fat, found in hydrogenated oils, are the worst kind of fat. He doesn't go into too much detail in regards to diet in this book. But what he does give I tend agree with as I present similar information in much greater detail in my book "Creationist Diet: Nutrition and God-given Foods According to the Bible."
But it is in regards to supplements that I disagree with Cooper. He wholeheartedly recommends high doses of the antioxidant vitamins beta-carotene (the precursor to vitamin A), vitamin C, and vitamin E, along with the mineral selenium. He claims taking amounts several times the RDA helps to prevent heart disease and cancer. However, the evidence is not as clear-cut as Cooper makes it sound. I include a chapter in my book citing scientific studies in this regard. Some have shown a reduced risk from taking antioxidants, but other studies have shown no effect. But that disagreement aside, this book does present helpful information for those of us who are starting to worry about our health and vitality as we age.

Jiaogulan: China's "Immortality Herb"--Unlocking the Secrets of Nature's Powerful Adaptogen and Antioxidant ASIN: 1887089160
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Wow! What a load of information on this amazing herb.
Comments: I received this book as a gift and began drinking Jiaogulan Tea at about the same time I started reading the book. My personal results has been positive from both items. I was amazed at how the topic was so thoroughly researched in so many countries. I have to say that this book really brought attention to the idea that there may be lots of remedies for healing from the Eastern world that may never make it into Western countries. If one herb has been so completely researched in China, Japan, and the USA, it seems like it should be made available to people in all countries. Thank you M. Blumert and Dr. J. Liu for a great and meticulous job on the assembly of such important research results available about Jiaogulan.

Dr. Kenneth H. Cooper's Antioxidant Revolution ASIN: 0785283137
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: Evidence not clear-cut as Cooper makes it out to be
Comments: This book discusses ways to reduce the free radical damage that is thought to lead cancer and heart disease. Cooper presents ways to do so through exercise, diet, and supplements. And it the supplements part that is the most controversial of this book. Dr. Cooper was one of the first noted fitness experts to recommend people start taking high doses of the antioxidant vitamins beta-carotene (the precursor to vitamin A), vitamin C, and vitamin E, along with the mineral selenium. He recommends taking levels that are several times the RDA for these nutrients. Cooper cites many scientific studies that show high does of these antioxidants reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. However, this book was originally published in 1994, and more recent studies have not given unqualified support to these earlier studies. In fact, more recent studies have been mixed. Some studies do show that taking antioxidants reduce risk, but other studies show there is no effect. I summarize many of these studies in a chapter on supplements in my book "Creationist Diet: Nutrition and God-given Foods According to the Bible." My conclusion is that there is some evidence for the benefit of taking antioxidants, but it is not clear-cut as Cooper makes it out to be. There may or may not be any benefit to the practice. Further clouding whether to take these supplements is the risk of side effects. Fortunately, Cooper does list possible side effects one might experience. Another issue that Cooper does not address is the cost factor. Vitamin C is rather inexpensive and vitamin E and selenium moderately so, but beta-carotene tends to be rather expensive. And beta-carotene is the antioxidant with the least evidence supporting it. Given the split evidence, I would say that if money is tight, one should spend their money on healthy food, not supplements. It is foods like fruits and vegetables that have unqualified evidence for their health benefits. And Cooper does include information on what foods are highest in the antioxidants and how best to prepare them to retain the nutrients. And my book provides further details on what foods help to reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, and strokes. As for myself, I have tried taking antioxidants in the amounts Cooper recommends, but I ended up with some of the side effects he mentions. I even tried taking different brands and forms of each nutrient and still had problems. So I simply don't bother with them anymore and focus on eating a healthy diet instead.

Beta-Carotene and Other Carotenoids: The Antioxidant Family That Protects Against Cancer and Heart Disease and Strengthens the Immune System (Keats Good Health Guides) ASIN: 0879837055
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: A long cry from just vitamin C.
Comments: Years ago it was Linus Pauling of Caltech touting the benefits of Vitamin C. Then others added the benefits of vitamin A, but be careful because one could go toxic with too much of the oil-based form. Then others came up with a plant-based form. Now, we are completely accepting of these and Passwater and Davis are bringing us into the millenium with an explanation of a whole new realm of antioxidants - their benefits, their necessity, etc. This is a good book for the beginners who want to learn more about how they can do more for themselves.

Eat Away Illness: How to Age-Proof Your Body With Antioxidant Foods ASIN: 0132248093
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Great Book !
Comments: I have had Carlson Wade's Book (Eat Away Illness) for several years, and would not part with my copy of this great book. I have found that the information here is invaluable, and cannot be found anywhere else. To my knowledge Carlson was the first one I ever herd talk about free radicals, and now its almost common to hear this talked about daily. He goes into great detail about how to turn the aging process around, and feel youthful once more. Although it may be a little expensive to begin the process of changing the way you eat, its well worth it in the end. The results are marvelous. The only other book I could mention that would go hand in hand is Jethro Closs book (Back to Eden). In any case this is a book well worth the money.
