The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook
ASIN: 157224223X

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Helps you understand and heal
Comments: This book was extremely helpful to me in overcoming problems with anxiety. It has great factual information that helped me to learn more about anxiety, its causes, the different types, the symptoms, etc. It also has an extremely thorough and comprehensive program to help overcome anxiety, including advice on exercise, diet, medication, therapy, self-talk exercises, relaxation, affirmations, spirituality ... truly a broad and multi-faceted approach to a sticky problem.
I think one of the best things about the workbook is how it makes you realize you're not alone -- that anxiety is a widespread problem, that your symptoms are familiar and documented, and that they can be treated and even cured.
Diagonally-Parked in a Parallel Universe : Working Through Social Anxiety
ASIN: 0967126509

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Eye-Opening
Comments: There are many books on social phobia and more coming out all the time. But this book does them one better. Instead of talking generally about what social phobia is and the primary ways to work on it, it goes into depth. It tells the reader all the different factors which can contribute to the appearance of social phobia, when it might not be social phobia after all, what happens in therapy, what EMDR and ETS are, what promise, if any, alternative therapies, herbal supplements and exercise may hold for treatment, the pros and cons of relying on online communication, what resources are available, and much more.
But what makes this book soar above the others is that is doesn't stop with describing social phobia and treatment. It breaks out of the box to show how social phobia affects every part of the phobic's life. It addresses fundamental needs such as loneliness, meeting people, developing relationships, surviving at work, finding jobs, and becoming more effective as a person, not just as a social phobic. It provides necessary life strategies as well.
I very much like this integrative approach and find the scope to be wide-ranging, useful and use-friendly.
Self-Coaching: How to Heal Anxiety and Depression
ASIN: 0471387371

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: A terrific guide for your first steps!
Comments: I purchased this book on the recommendation of a friend, and as a 'compantion of sorts to 'Undoing Depression.' This was one of those rare self-help books that genuinely seems to be centered on that premise.
Luciani give a brilliant background to what you can get from self-helping, and explains it in a way that doesn't make you feel 1.) hopelessly inacapable of accomplishing relief from depression, 2.) explains the causes in a way that don't make you feel like a failure for developing the thought patterns in the first place, and 3.) doesn't use a lot of psychobabble, (save the exception of the inner child thing, which is just a personal irritant of mine) so you actually can see where he's tryig to get you to go.
I really liked his approach to focusing your recovery more internally and on reminding you that it's not an overnight process. Another appreciation I found was that he recongized how difficult changing these patterns can be...and so you expect those hurdles, rather than get discouraged yet again.
I found this to be an excellent book for anyone suffering mild to moderate depression. (And I recommend buying this as a companion to 'Undoing Depression,' so you really get a good sense of what you are working with) If you are severely depressed, you should probably work through more of it before tackling self-coaching.
A 10-Week Recovery Program for Overcoming Panic, Anxiety, and Phobias
ASIN: 1570251517

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: With the 10-Week Recovery Program, I finally did recover.
Comments: After years of unsuccessfully fighting panic attacks, I had just about given up. I was so discouraged and felt like such a failure.
I had been working with a therapist, but I could only see her once every two weeks. In the meantime, my panic attacks would get worse, and at each visit, it seemed like I was starting all over again.
My therapist finally recommended the Recovery Program. It includes Overcoming Panic, Anxiety, and Phobias, and it also has 5 audio tapes. You're supposed to listen to one side of a tape, about 15 minutes, every day for a week. During that week, you also use a little booklet that goes along with the tape and read in the book. I found that they reinforced each other and gave me the support I needed to keep going.
The other part of the recovery program is the CalmDown relaxation tape. I used it every day in the beginning. Gradually, I learned how to relax my body and my mind without even needing the tape.
Now I can do everything I want to do without the fear and confusion that made me miserable for so long.
Reduce Stress and Anxiety (Success World Self-Hypnosis Series)
ASIN: 0865800103

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: The releive stress tape was great
Comments: I found this tape stashed away in a relatives closet, when we were cleaning. It was mixed with some other tapes made by Dr. David Illig, but it was well worn. She gave it to me, and I've been using it since. It works great! I was hoping to get another, because this one is so worn out, but its not being manufactured anymore. I hope it makes a comeback, along with some of the other tapes I would like to order from Dr. Illig.
Change Your Brain, Change Your Life: The Breakthrough Program for Conquering Anxiety, Depression, Obsessiveness, Anger, and Impulsiveness
ASIN: 0812929985

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: One of the Most Important Books I have Ever Read
Comments: This book shows you that there is hope for everyone! Though the title is a little silly, it is appropriate. This book actually shows you pictures of brains with different emotional/chemical imbalances. Give it to anyone who questions whether diet or medication really affect their feelings and relationships. Many people believe that medication is for weak people and that they should be able to conquer their problems through sheer will. I have known countless people who have tried everything to overcome emotional issues but actually changing their physiology. This book gives indisputable evidence that problems like depression, aggression, ADD and Alzheimers are physically based. The changes in patients' brains before and after treatment (often, but not always medication-based) are phenomenal. It demonstrates with the SPECT series brain scans that our brain chemistry rules our emotions.
I learned that even minor bumps to the head can change people's personalities and ability to learn. Dr. Amen shows pictures of brains with little or no activity in areas that have been injured, mirroring the patients' emotional or intellectual difficulties.
Amen is very clear that he always uses talk therapy and teaching communication skills before he contemplates having a SPECT series done. His point is that many people can benefit from learning new skills and ways of looking at life, but some are truly stuck because their brain activity keeps them looping on negative thoughts, reacting with extreme anger, obsessing about limited situations, or shutting down when they try to concentrate. When medication is used these patients can finally put the communication and coping skills they have learned to good use.
This book helped me understand people in my life who have seemed hopeless, shallow and even vicious. It showed me that there is hope for everyone who is willing to open their mind, get proper treatment, and challenge how they have viewed the world up until now. The exercises he gives the reader are very specific and helpful. If another reviewer thinks that there is nothing concrete in the book, then they aren't willing to look at their diet, their habitual way of thinking, and herbal and medical treatments. The prescriptions are plentiful and very specific.
It is an easy read, very accessible, with fascinating stories that pull you in. It is not academic or inaccessible. Quite the opposite. It's a great book for anyone who wants to know more about themselves and how their body works.
Dying of Embarrassment: Help for Social Anxiety and Phobia
ASIN: 1879237237

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Useful, Encouraging, Great Book
Comments: This book is an excellent source of help for anyone suffering from social phobia/social anxiety (sometimes mislabeled as shyness but actually a lot deeper than that). I found this book very easy to read and follow, unlike some other books I've read that seem to be aimed at therapists or people studying the phobia rather than trying to gain help for it.
This book has step-by-step plans outlined in each chapter that will help you get closer to overcoming your fears and anxiety. Of course, you have to work at it every day, and this book is very encouraging and supportive. Things like the authors considering our negative self-talk "maladaptive" (non-productive) as opposed to "irrational" (they don't feel we are irrational by dictionary definition) made me feel a lot better about myself and made me want to stick with it. I highly recommend this book.
Panic and Anxiety Disorder : 121 Tips, Real-life Advice, Resources and More
ASIN: 1928607047

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: A way to support family and friends
Comments: Having a close family member recently diagnosed with Panic Anxiety Disorder, I found the book extremely useful in both understanding the illness and knowing how to support this person. The author provides easy-to-understand details about the illness and solid ways of supporting loved-ones. Now, I feel like I can talk to my family member and no longer have to side-step the discussion. A must-read for anyone who has loved ones with this condition.
The Shyness and Social Anxiety Workbook: Proven Techniques for Overcoming Your Fears
ASIN: 1572242167

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: A helpful workbood
Comments: This workbook is a great resource! It is great that the authors, who are published researchers in the area of social anxiety, can describe their methods in an easy to read, easy to follow workbook. I especially found the section on getting to know your social anxiety helpful in breaking down something broad and formless (shyness) into a road map for making change.
If you are serious about making some changes in your life with regard to shyness and social avoidance, I highly recommend this book.
The Positive Power of Negative Thinking: Using Defensive Pessimism to Harness Anxiety and Perform at Your Peak
ASIN: 0465051391

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Constructive Thinking about Worry, Anxiety, Depression, Life
Comments: I enjoyed reading this book, with its fascinating personality test for individual differences in optimism -- pessimism and its interesting case histories. PPNT is also the most helpful psychology book I have read in a long time -- new insight into myself, people I know, and how we do (or don't) get along. The author's idea of "constructive pessimism" as an adaptive cognitive strategy for feeling better and living better is a great contribution to the psychology of everyday life. Not everyone has an optimistic temperament, and many of us struggle with worry, anxiety, and/or depression. Dr. Norem's book has helpful insights into thoughts, feelings, and real life.
Don't Panic: Taking Control of Anxiety Attacks
ASIN: 0060951605

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Excellent Resource
Comments: One of the best books I've ready concerning panic attacks. I've bought others but this was the most thorough and helpful. It made me realize I'm not going crazy. His suggestion about using one physician as resource in managing the symptoms really helped me to find the right doctor to manage the problem correctly.
I've since loaned the book to a friend. It must've helped. She hasn't returned the book!
Also check out his tape series. The breathing exercises are excellent.
Painfully Shy: How to Overcome Social Anxiety and Reclaim Your Life
ASIN: 0312266286

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Lots of good information in this book
Comments: Wow. I think maybe that last reviewer had some problems other than just being painfully shy. I don't usually write reviews but I like this book and have found it helpful. Most books dealing with this subject seem to be more specific to social skills-- how to be assertive, how to win friends and influence people, etc. I like this book because it deals more generally with how to be comfortable with yourself in social situations. It's clear and easy to read and has interesting examples. It also has helpful exercises to try.
Beyond Anxiety and Phobia: A Step-By-Step Guide to Lifetime Recovery
ASIN: 1572242299

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Beyond the Typical Advise (that you've already heard)
Comments: This book is extremely helpful to those who have found other advise too elementary. If you have tried the basics - diet, relaxation, medications - and are not satisfied that you are getting to the ROOT of your problem, try this book. The author helps you discover personality traits and other issues that could be undermining your basic sense of security. I have always considered myself to be a very strong person and I was at a loss when I began experiencing anxiety and panic attacks. I quit caffeine, learned to relax and started eating better. It helped, but I still didn't feel "right." I have gotten much more relief from my symptoms by reading this book. The author asks questions to help the reader explore the BIG things in life, including love, spirituality and having a sense of purpose. He includes a lot of food for thought as well as practical advise on how to build for yourself a secure, meaningful life. The language is very easy to read, written intelligently and respectfully. I highly recommend this book.
EMDR : The Breakthrough Therapy for Overcoming Anxiety, Stress, and Trauma
ASIN: 0465043011

Customer's Rating: 3
Summary: Caution clinicians, not a manual!
Comments: Please note that this appears to generally be a review of some case histories in which EMDR was helpful. I was hoping to learn some techniques for practical application. It stresses in the disclaimer in the book that it is not a manual and no one should try to apply the techniques without first completing the training package, available at significant expense at the institute. In fact, it stated that attempting to apply them without first going through the training may be dangerous or harmful. If you are looking for only background information on the intervention or are already trained this may be an appropriate resource.
Anxiety and Panic Attacks: Their Cause and Cure:The Five-Point Life-Plus Program for Conquering Fear
ASIN: 0449213315

Customer's Rating: 3
Summary: Not bad...but nothing to set it above the pack...
Comments: I was impressed with this books approach to working through anxiety or panic attacks. But, I didn't find anything of noteworty exception to distinguish it from other books dealing with this subject.
It is also a fairly 'quick' read...which, for anyone dealing with this type of issue, really should spend a little more time on. I felt like it was best served as an 'airport read; it's style just didn't lend itself to the thorough examination one struggling with panic attacks should invest in.
Again, well-written and easy to understand...but I don't see this as a 'life-altering' read for anyone dealing with these issues.
You Can Choose to Be Happy: "Rise Above" Anxiety, Anger, and Depression
ASIN: 0965337715

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: A Marriage and Family Therapist from California
Comments: Only read this book if you want to change your life. This book is for people who want to help themselves and believe that they have choices in their lives. As a therapist, I believe this concept is one of the most important awarenesses you can have. Once a person accepts this they know they can have more control over their reactions in every life situation. Dr. Stevens book is not to entertain but to give well thought out strategies for rising above difficult situations and moving towards "harmonious functioning", which he defines as having happiness and harmony in your life.
The Anxiety Cure
ASIN: 0849942969

Customer's Rating: 1
Summary: Too many contradictions and absolutes:
Comments: I bought this book based on the back cover which reads: "...Then he offers practical proven steps you can take to change your lifestyle, without relying on medication and psychotherapy." I found as I was reading the book, however, that Dr. Hart is a huge proponent of the use of medications. There are also many absolutes in the book. He claims that if you don't do certain things or let certain things go too long, you may never get rid of anxiety or worry. This book is definitely not for everyone.
Anxiety, Phobias, and Panic: A Step-By-Step Program for Regaining Control of Your Life
ASIN: 0446670537

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: This program WORKS!
Comments: This book avoids all the hype and moralizing and psychobabble, the useless anecdotes so often found in the "Quick Tips To Anxiety Relief" genre. It's a solid, step-by-step program of cognitive techniques which, when practiced and mastered SLOWLY over time, can change your life. I know from personal experience. After three years of therapy for Generalized Anxiety Disorder, I decided I was getting worse, not better. I had the good fortune to find this book at the library, and was excited to see that it took the responsibility for "changing me" out of the hands of a therapist and put the responsibility squarely where it belonged: on me. Starting in 1992 I spent over a year mastering the skills, and still use the book once a month for reference and a bit of a "refresher course." What can I say? My symptoms have vanished! No more undiagnosable stomache and joint aches, no more pills, no more panic attacks. Even my ALLERGIES have disappeared! It's amazing how much of our poor health is stress-related, and even more amazing how a book like this can help one to unlearn a lifetime of bad thought habits (like perfectionism.) If you're motivated to change your life, the program works. That's the best review I can give it!
Treatment Plans and Interventions for Depression and Anxiety Disorders
ASIN: 1572305142

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: State of the art
Comments: Essential material and systematic paths of therapy by the experts' experts.
Dr. Leahy is simply the best in his field. And it is a very important field indeed.
Thank you for this book.
Keys to Parenting Your Anxious Child (Barron's Parenting Keys)
ASIN: 0812096053

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Keys to Parenting your Anxious Child
Comments: This book provides a wealth of information for parents who want to help their children learn to overcome anxiety. It explains what anxiety is (and is not), how it affects each member of the family, how to cope, how to communicate effectively with your child, and how to stop undesirable behavior. It addresses the effects of certain parenting styles and how these styles can help or hinder progress toward better mental health. There is a chapter that discusses medications; if they are necessary and which ones are helpful. It also addresses how to communicate with others about your child's current situation (school, etc.) Most importantly, the principals taught in this book can be followed and applied easily. I am the parent of an anxious adolescent, and I found this book to be helpful, encouraging, and enlightening. I highly recommend this book.
Panic Free : Eliminate Anxiety / Panic Attacks Without Drugs and Take Control of Your Life
ASIN: 0966854608

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Unique Perspective
Comments: So far, I've read the book three times, gleaning more from it each time.
Panic Free is an easy read. It addresses a very complex subject simply, yet comprehensively, and I'm happy to report that Dr. Freeman isn't "selling" any particular treatment or "easy fix".
The author's unique perspective as both a clinician AND a patient provides remarkable, yet practical, insights into dealing with panic/anxiety attacks, regardless of source.
Since I'm reluctant to lend my copy of the book to others for fear it might disappear, I plan to purchase several more copies to give to select friends. This is a very valuable book.
Change Your Life and Everyone in It: How to: Transform Difficult Relationships over Come Anxiety and Depression Break Free from Self-Defeating Ways of Thinking, Feeling, and Acting in on
ASIN: 0684824698

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: An Awesome Must Read!
Comments: At first glance, the title may seem manipulative, but really, when you are trying to change a situation, aren't you doing just that? Stop the nagging, threats and poor results from those efforts, life is too short. Stop wasting your time. Michele does a super job of keeping every word interesting and understandable - for the masses! I am ordering a few of her other books as well, since I like her approach and writing style so much. It's not all about changing others, it's about changing you too and the way you think. You won't be sorry.
Changing Character: Short-Term Anxiety-Regulating Psychotherapy for Restructuring Defenses, Affects, and Attachment
ASIN: 0465077927

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Doing psychotherapy has never been easier!
Comments: Using cognitive-behavioral techniques to understand psychodynamic concepts such as defenses/defensive behaviors, and self and other representations, and their restructuring, is such an innovative and non-psychodynamic-psychotherapist-friendly approach. Fascinated by object-relations theories, McCullough Vaillant's book is the first book that convinces me those theories are not just for reading but also for easy application in the healing process.
Drive Without Fear: The Insecure Driver's Guide to Independence and Anxiety-Free Driving
ASIN: 1587215004

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: Wonderful Encouragement for the older driver
Comments: I'm 47 and have made several unsuccessful attempts in the past to get my license. The difficulties I experienced seemed to be something I had to live with and could not get over. What changed my life was that I read the previous review and thought "here was hope for me".
So I ordered this book. Mr. Klein seemed to have written the book expressly for me, even though it is aimed for new and learning drivers 55+. He covered all of the concerns that older drivers have, especially the ones that I had (turns and changing lanes)with specific examples and tips. Yesterday (12/26/02) I received my driver's license. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has fear or trepidation of learning to drive and getting their license. If I can do it, you can, too!
Anxiety Disorders and Phobias: A Cognitive Perspective
ASIN: 0465003850

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: The definitive book on Anxiety
Comments: As a lifelong sufferer from various anxiety disorders (Generalized Anxiety Disorder, OCD, Panic states)and a prolific reader of self help books, I can say that this book contains more insight into anxiety disorders than virtually any book I have ever read on the subject. Dr's Beck and Emery touch upon just about every area that an anxiety sufferer might want to know about. They write with eloquence and insight, compassion and understanding. You really feel that all other books are derivative of this one, because this work is the definitive work on anxiety. A word of caution: I truly feel that whereas the layman (that's me and you)can gain much from this book, it seems to be oriented to the professional.A type of manual or bible for the therapist. As such, it's not necessarily the book that you would curl up to at the fireplace.(For a book of that ilk -and this is a compliment- read Claire Weeks: "Hope and Help for your nerves", my other favorite book).Still, if you take it for what it's worth (and that's alot) it's simply replete with strategies and perspectives that simply cannot be found elsewhere. If you can extract these nuggets, you'll find your wall covered with excerpts from this book, that you could use as a daily guide to living through the sometimes tormenting world of anxiety. Buy it. Covet it. But take it in pieces. Like an singular encyclopedia of the mind, rather than a rah-rah pick me up book that feels good, but doesn't leave you off any better than you started. P.S. Beside Beck and Weekes, Reid Wilson is also a terrific self help writer.
Embracing the Fear: Learning to Manage Anxiety and Panic Attacks
ASIN: 089486971X

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: This book saved me!
Comments: I must admit that Lucinda Bassett's program (15 week taped program) and Dr. Bourne's "Anxiety and Phobia Workbook" are remarkable...but I feel that this book "Embracing the Fear" was the last "pill" I really needed to help in my recovery from agoraphobia. Once housebound, I have read many books on the topic. This book is wonderful... I have underlined and highlighted almost the entire book. THIS is the first book that talked to me about MY fear--not fear of dying like so many other books describe but fear of the TERROR of a panic attack. I KNEW I was not dying...I was just avoiding my life trying to protect myself from having one of those dreaded attacks away from home. I HIGHLY recommend this book. I am currently finishing up my master's degree in counseling and will definitely use this with my anxious clients. I can't tell you how much this book has helped me. It is like my second Bible.
Fight Your Fear and Win: Seven Skills for Performing Your Best Under Pressure--At Work, in Sports, on Stage
ASIN: 076790625X

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: The technique of mastery: an Actor's perspective
Comments: As a professional actor I have searched the dusky shelves of libraries across the states studying the writen record of the craft of acting... and there are thousands of books offering endless advice about how to cultivate one's performance skills. The books are often esoteric and require some strange practices bordering on the mystical. From lying on the floor doing primal screams to over-analyzing the script as if it were a lab animal as opposed to a wild thing... these books always begin with promise and then lead me further and further into a labyrinth of confusion. Finally, I have found the book which contains a precise yet playful process which addresses the fundamental concerns of acting. Don Greene's book presents a technique for Mastery. As human beings we are constantly learning new skills and we rarely ask ourselves about how we learn. Don Greene gives a clear and practical account of how to cultivate not just 'skill,' but rather, the skill of developing skill, the mother of all skills. Prior to working with this material, I would come off stage after a good performance and have no idea how I entered into a creative state. Vice/versa, sometimes I would give a bad performance and despair that I couldn't act. I felt like I was at the whim of some unseen forces, the 'theatre gods' perhaps. Now I am discovering that my creativity is entirely within my control. I create my own states of creativity or blockage based on how I process the information coming to me all the time. How I interpret this information is largely responsible for the quality of my experience of life and how I perform in my own life. Whether I am performing Hamlet, dealing with an agent, auditioning, or enjoying liesure time at home, I find the new skills I am cultivating from Don Greene's book to be of immense value. Although the book is always scientific, precise, and practical, it suggests a profound transformation in the way we view what is possible for human beings. It challenges us to push the limits of the known and discover the vast resources within ourselves. Furthermore, Don's free online performance test helped me see clearly what my strengths and weaknesses were and thereby, focus my efforts on those particular skills which would improve my performance as effectively, efficiently, and economically as possible.
The Road Less Traveled and Beyond: Spiritual Growth in an Age of Anxiety
ASIN: 0684835614

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Fast Forward through some parts
Comments: I enjoyed this book! I am very interested in change- why some are willing to and some resist it. Peck's views on change were insightful. I totally agree with him concerning the issue of simplistic thinking, too. I have struggled with organized religion-couldn't take the confines of it and truly knew that I could think for myself and didn't need a doctrine of an organization to guide me- I can connect directly to God. His views on the Stages of Spiritual Growth helped me. Although I had read about this topic in other books-his "way of putting it" finally helped me sort it all out. I did find he refered to his other books too frequently and it was distracting. I finally just skimmed (fast forwarded) to the parts more interesting to me. I would reccommend this book to those further along the "road less traveled".
Overcoming Anxiety For Dummies
ASIN: 0764554476

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Perfect for High Paced Life
Comments: This book was perfect for me (a New Yorker), because I am the typical city man: fast paced life, lots of stress, and lots of anxiety. My high stress lifestyle, is derived from my high stress job. I almost didnt have time to read this book in fact, unitl my therapist insisted that I do so. I am almost done with the book and I wanted to thank the authors for providing me with great insight on my problem and more importantly for the solutions I have started to take to help myself. They made it quite clear the vitality of living a less-stress life. Now if only they could write Dummies guide to New York Streets and Traffic. Thanks Again from the Big Apple. Thomas
Triumph Over Shyness: Conquering Shyness and Social Anxiety
ASIN: 0071374981

Customer's Rating: 2
Summary: Can't really suggest this to anyone
Comments: The entire book is very short and can easily be read by anyone in just a couple of days. By the end I was thinking to myself "that's it?". In all those pages, this is all they can come up with, after all the years of experience? The book could have been a little more deep and went a little further. To be really honest, I could pretty much describe to you what the entire book tells us in just a few sentences. I guess I don't know what I was expecting. All of this to me is common sense information most everyone already knows. Like, if you want to swim, you've got to just jump in the water. I wouldn't expect anyone to agree with me, but this is just one person's opinion. I'm sure it might be very useful for some people.
Overcoming Postpartum Depression and Anxiety
ASIN: 1886039348

Customer's Rating: 3
Summary: A decent book for the un-informed.
Comments: Book gave basic information about the disease. I would like to have seen more in-depth information about the causes, statistics and treatment. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, and am already aware of the majority of the information in the book.
Healing The Shadow
ASIN: 0966982207

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Facing the "Beast"
Comments: Bishop's book is a very valuable and inspirational book for any one wishing to heal their innerchild. Bishop is an experienced shaman who writes from his own experiences as well as other case studies. The reading material is easy to follow as well as pleasant to read. Bishop leads the reader into learning how to recognize and even accept the "Beast" within. He explains how the "Beast" is manifested by the innerchild and gives easy to follow steps on how to communicate with the "Beast". He explains that once the "Beast" is heard, blockages can be removed and healing can occur.
This book is both enlightening and healing. Without a doubt, it deserves 5 stars!

ASIN: 1567313825

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: This book is very special
Comments: I just finished reading Healing Fear. Bourne takes you through a number of paths that lead you towards discovering the way suitable to your own recovery. Healing Fear is very well written. I am sure that hours of careful reflection preceded each thought put forward in the book. It is comprehensive, thoughtful, maintains a high level of maturity through Bourne's opennes to refer you to other resources and communicates compassion as well as understanding for anxiety suffers that i experienced for the first time on this level.
Depression-Free, Naturally: 7 Weeks to Eliminating Anxiety, Despair, Fatigue, and Anger from Your Life
ASIN: 0345435176

Customer's Rating: 2
Summary: Mis-Named
Comments: This book offers some excellent nutritional advice in dealing with physical illnesses that mimic the symptoms of depression. It also addresses dietary factors that would lead your body to exibit depressive symptoms.
This book however does not live up to its title. It fails to throughly and accurately take into account the different types and degrees of depression.
This book gives great ideas of things to try and questions to ask you doctor in regards to things that might need to be ruled out however this is not a good resource as to how to manage depression. A book which was more helpful was The Feeling Good Handbook.
Overcoming Shyness and Social Phobia: A Step-By-Step Guide (Clinical Application of Evidence-Based Psychotherapy)
ASIN: 0765701200

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Best book to overcome social anxiety
Comments: I've never left a review for a book, but after reading this really helpful book I am in debt with Mr. Rapee. This is an easy to read book, short (116 p), that goes straight to the point. I've read 5 books on social anxiety and I can say that this is the most practical one, with tips that you can start applying immediately. There are cognitive suggestions to overcome your fears, issues about exposure (what he calls reality testing), and tips about improving your social skills. But remember that this book alone won't cure you: In my case, medication, group therapy, and aerobic exercise (yoga too) are other weapons I'm using to fight sad and anxiety. Good luck.
Beyond Boredom and Anxiety: Experiencing Flow in Work and Play
ASIN: 0787951404

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: A Good Read!
Comments: Mihaly Csikszentmihaly presents a detailed examination of motivation based on a study of a half-dozen groups of people involved in recreational pursuits: rock climbers, composers, dancers, chess players and basketball players. He chose these groups in an effort to understand more fully what motivates people to engage in activities that are extremely challenging or offer few external rewards. Although some of his conclusions may be of interest to executives and managers seeking ways to motivate employees, most readers will find this academic study too detailed. Some of the interview comments are interesting, but much of the book describes survey results, a discussion that non-statisticians may be hard put to follow. Because of this complexity and because of the book's somewhat dense prose, we [...] recommend this 25-year-old reissued classic primarily to scholars or to those who are intensely curious about the nuts-and-bolts of motivation. But any human resources professional or leadership specialist should have at least a passing familiarity with its concepts and contents.

Summary: The National Anxiety Foundation gives Dr. Granoff an A+
Comments: This book is highly recommended by the National Anxiety Foundation for anyone who suffers from genuine panic disorder. With all the commercials offering trendy mail-order self-help cures to the public, it is refreshing to see a book that reminds us that this is a medical disorder and requires individual treatment by a qualified physician. Panic disorder is a treatable medical disorder. This book helps the reader to understand the medical root of the problem and how physicians through medical science are eliminating the symptoms of this illness.
