My House Is Killing Me! The Home Guide for Families With Allergies and Asthma
ASIN: 0801867304

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Just the beginning
Comments: This is one of the best of the books on detoxifying your home. It goes into the level of detail most people need to really figure out what to do. It's on a par with some of the best Web sites on the subject (i.e. greenhome.com, et al). And it gets its info right. I should know, as I've read almost all the similar books in my efforts to detoxify my home, including the first (and still one of the best): Linda Mason Hunter's Healthy Home. So I would get this book, as it is a great way to learn about the tools for the coming Renaissance in simple and natural living. Mssrs. May and Samet have really done a nice job in moving the ball forward. Kudos!
Reversing Asthma: Breathe Easier With This Revolutionary New Program
ASIN: 0446673633

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Great Book
Comments: After reading this book I went out to buy copies for friends with Asthma. (Also bought it for my doctor.) This book is great because is mixes the holistic treatments with the standard medical treatments. It is one of the few books that looks at the underlining causes of asthma and I believe will be the treatment standard in the future. If you or a loved one have asthma, this is a MUST READ!
Breathing Free: The Revolutionary 5-Day Program to Heal Asthma, Emphysema, Bronchitis, and Other Respiratory Ailments
ASIN: 0609806343

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: *The* premier introduction to the Buteyko method!
Comments: If you have or ever have had any kind of respiratory problem in your life, or you know of someone who's had any kind of respiratory problem in their lives, BUY THIS BOOK! The Buteyko method of breath retraining promises to be the medical breakthrough of the next century, and this book is as good an introduction to the method as it gets. I began the book with a Control Pause of 8 and finished the book a week later with a CP of 30 and am looking forward to getting to 50 or 60. You'll have to read the book to understand about the Control Pause, but I'm willing to make the prediction that, in the years to come, the CP will be regarded as almost more valuable than the pulse in determining a person's overall state of health. The book's thesis--that carbon dioxide is not the waste gas we've all been taught it is, and that low-grade hyperventilation is at the root of an amazing number of health disorders--is one of those counterintuitive ideas that suddenly makes a lot of sense once its implications are thoroughly spelled out. That the book does. My only constructive criticism of the book is that it tends to be a little wordy in some parts, and occasionally repititious, but not so much that it becomes disagreeable. For us Yanks on the western side of the puddle, a bit more brevity would have been welcome. Nonetheless, this book is too important to let a few literary bumps stand in the way. Buy the book, read it, and begin practicing the exercises. Give yourself a week to try it on for size. You won't be disappointed. I most certainly was not. I'm feeling much better already.
I Was Poisoned By My Body, The Odyssey of a Doctor Who Reversed Fibromyalgia, Leaky Gut Syndrome, and Multiple Chemical Sensitivity - Naturally!
ASIN: 0967605091

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Wonderfully enlightening and helpful book!
Comments: As a sufferer from Multiple Chemical Sensitivity for 11 years, I found this book to be extremely enlightening on the subject of healing from this condition based on correcting the colon disorder that is underlying it. This book does not just help the reader learn how to treat symptoms, but instead shows how to correct the REAL problem so that true healing can then take place - I believe if we give our bodies half a chance, they will recover, as shown by this book. The book is very easy to understand, which is great for people like me with chemically-induced "brain fog"! I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering from MCS, CFS, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, or any of the autoimmune disorders!
ABC of Asthma, Allergies and Lupus: Eradicate Asthma - Now!
ASIN: 096299426X

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Asthma really helped
Comments: I have had a chronic cough for years, a form of cough-variant asthma. I also am on a salt-free, or low-salt diet. According to the author, a low or no-salt diet is a trigger for asthma symptoms, for your body can't hold in the water you need and becomes dehydrated. He explains as we become dehydrated we produce a large amount of histamine, which creates back pain, inflamed joints, allergies and asthma. He also explains how the lungs need water almost more than any other part of the body, and get tight and sensitive when the body lacks sufficient water. You also have to get off potassium, such as from orange juice and bananas for some people these are also triggers because they unbalance the salt/potassium balance.
To make a long story short, I started drinking the 8-10 glasses of water he recommends, with a pinch of salt (only use sea-salt) after every two glasses, and 1/2 t. a day of sea salt. Within 2 hours the tightness in my chest got better, and within one day I had completely stopped coughing. I kept thinking this was too simple to be true, but now, ten days later, I have almost complete relief from asthma symptoms.
This book really makes sense, and the information is presented well. Oh, and another benefit - all my lower back pain went away overnight, after months of pain, chiropractors, stretching, and everything else I could think of. He explains how lower back pain comes from dehydration, that occurs well before we even feel thirsty.
It does take a focus to drink that much water, without any tea, caffeine, or other kinds of drinks, but it is worth it. I have recommended this book to everyone I know and have taken it to my doctor to read. There are lots of testimonials in this book from doctors and clinics all around the country who have had the same excellent results using the recommendations in this book.

Summary: Excellent reference for GERD, very comprehensive.
Comments: I found this book excellently written and easy to understand. The illustrations are appropriate and the subjecct matter is approached objectively and professionally. Allergies and Asthma For Dummies
ASIN: 076455218X

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: If you have allergies, you need this book!
Comments: I got this book about two weeks after my 9-year-old son suffered his first asthma attack. After reading it, I feel much better prepared to cope with his condition. The author's tone is reassuring without being condescending. And there is an enormous amount of information, everything from how to choose a specialist to charts describing the effects and usual dosages of the most common medications. Since I have been suffering from allergies and sinus problems myself this spring, it was especially useful. I think this might be the best investment in our family's health I ever made!

ASIN: 0929173309

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: This book saved my husband's life!
Comments: For years, my husband suffered from anxiety attacks that hit without warning and were quite debilitating. He sought drug therapy, but as time passed, the attacks became more frequent and severe until one day he went into Bells palsy and anaphylactic shock and found himself in the emergency room surrounded by physicians with no answers.
When he received the older version of this book in 1990, it was a revelation. My husband had been becoming increasingly sensitive to MSG while at the same time unknowingly adding it to his diet. In clear, easy-to read language, the book helped identify sources of MSG. It became clear that it was in virtually everything he was consuming--from breakfast cereals to canned tuna to Coca Cola. We altered his diet drastically, choosing mostly unprocessed whole foods, and the results were incredible. His personality changed as he was no longer on edge. His concentration and memory improved dramatically. He no longer needed drug therapy, and stopped doubting himself as an anxiety-prone person. As an added bonus, he lost weight, increased muscle mass and became generally healthier.
As his allergy continued to be quite severe, we turned to the book frequently to avoid more ER visits, and have been largely successful for the past twelve years. It is hard to imagine how life would have been had we not had this book at our disposal. My husband would have continued to suffer his 'mysterious ailment' until, quite possibly, it took his life.
I cannot recommend this book heartily enough. It should be *required* reading for anyone who even suspects they have "Chinese restaurant syndrome" and recommended reading for just about everyone else. It is incredible that such a small book can make such a big difference.
A Parent's Guide to Asthma: How You Can Help Your Child Control Asthma at Home, School, and Play
ASIN: 0452272165

Customer's Rating: 5

Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions: Self-Management of Heart Disease, Arthritis, Diabetes, Asthma, Bronchitis, Emphysema and Others
ASIN: 0923521534

Customer's Rating: 3
Summary: Good resource for seniors
Comments: This book, written in a very simple, "self-help" style, seems to be geared to the senior citizen suffering from chronic illness and emphasizes developing and implementing management plans for exercise, diet, and medical care. While much of it is common sense, it does offer bulleted, structured outlines for communicating with medical professionals, managing medicines, planning for the future (and possibly greater physical degeneration), and most of all acknowledges the feelings and depression that often accompany chronic illness.
Breathe Well, Be Well : A Program to Relieve Stress, Anxiety, Asthma, Hypertension, Migraine, and Other Disorders for Better Health
ASIN: 0471324361

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: A good interdisciplinary book
Comments: This book is good because it emphasizes breathing techniques to attenuate stress-induced conditions (ex. Asthma, Anxiety). But again, as with most stress books, it falls short on recommending proper nutritional supplementation. Most Asthma books don't recommend any holistic/herbal remedies; they only recommend pharmaceutical drugs. A few Asthma books like these do recommend natural remedies, but these remedies are often unproven, and can be dangerous if mixed with other drugs/alcohol. I am really disappointed in all Asthma books in general, because they most often do not recommend the three most important ORTHOMOLECULAR Asthma remedies: Calcium, Magnesium, and Vitamin C. Calcium is simply there to balance magnesium and to chelate with ascorbate (vitamin C) to make calcium ascorbate. Magnesium relaxes lungs and improves air flow. Last and certainly not least, vitamin C has potent antihistamine effects via inhibiton of mast cell degranulation, and also has bronchodilator effects via inhibition of phosphodiesterase. Taking several grams
a day of vitamin C (preferably buffered calcium ascorbate), along with some magnesium may completely inhibit mild asthma, and should significantly help moderate to severe asthma, with no known drug interactions (except perhaps with Theophylline, which inhibits the same phosphodiesterase enzyme that vitamin C does). These three natural supplements also play very important roles in maintaining mental health. This information is referenced in the Allergies/Asthma chapter and Chronic Mental Illnesses Part of my book "The Failures of American Medicine", available here at Amazon...
Control Your Child's Asthma: A Breakthrough Program for the Treatment and Management of Childhood Asthma
ASIN: 0805064559

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: MUST READ!
Comments: This book is wonderful. Every parent of a child with asthma must read it. I have searched and searched for information this helpful and practical for two years. The book gave me confidence in our Dr. (who is always too busy to give us much information), but also pointed out some areas we need to work on with the Dr. I always question all the medication we give our son. After reading this book, I feel I understand asthma and the current treatment plans.
Hidden Affects in Somatic Disorders: Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Asthma, Psoriasis, Diabetes, Cerebrovascular Disease, and Other Disorders.
ASIN: 1887841164

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Of tremendous interest and value to medical students
Comments: In the six separate patient studies comprising Why Do We Fall Ill?: The Story Hiding In The Body, Dr. Luis Chiozza explores the question of how helpful an articulate patient is to the determination of why and how a somatic disorder develops, and the choice and impact of therapeutic options. Why Do We Fall Ill? will prove of tremendous interest and value to medical students, practicing physicians, health care providers, and the non-specialist general reader with an interest in the psychological treatment of "somatic" disorders to improve the outcome of therapy.
Winning the War Against Asthma and Allergies
ASIN: 0827386222

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Open your mind
Comments: ...
To anyone who is reading this review, seeking hope for allergy CURING: ignore the negative comments and judge for yourself...
NAET is incredible, it is totally new, and something you will find yourself questioning when you read about it (because it is so different to the status quo medical approach). But let me tell you from personal experience: IT WORKS!
I have eliminated car sickness with NAET, and am currently working on my severe pollen fever. I'm seeing big results! If I can cure my pollen fever, don't you think you can cure YOUR allergies?
At least study it, and even find a practitioner ... and try it instead of point-blank giving up an opportunity to end your suffering. Those who dismiss this new approach to allergies without even trying it (!) have no one to blame but themselves for their unresolved allergies.
...
GOOD LUCK!

Natural Relief for Your Child's Asthma: A Guide to Controlling Symptoms and Reducing Your Child's Dependence on Drugs
ASIN: 006095289X

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Powerful information for parents!
Comments: This book helped our family put the brakes on the out-of-control rollercoaster ride of asthma. "Natural Relief for Your Child's Asthma" empowers parents with page after page of specific instructions on how to reduce your child's dependence on medication by understanding the limits of conventional medicine, finding and avoiding triggers, using food as a healer, using supplements to strengthen your child and using alternative mind-body medicine to enhance your child's well-being. While the authors have lots of great information about how to reduce dependence on medicine over time, they aren't zealots who encourage you to turn your back on conventional medicine. The real power that comes from this book is that now, when I go to see my child's asthma specialist, I can ask informed questions about my son's condition. I'm no longer a note taker jotting down what medicines my child should take when. I can encourage my doctor to challenge us to make dietary and lifestyle changes to detoxify our child's environment that he might not otherwise have mentioned assuming that we would prefer the "easy" way out of finding stronger and stronger medicines to rescue our child. I strongly encourage any parent of a child with asthma to read this book!
Freedom from Asthma: The Revolutionary 5-Day Treatment for Healing Asthma With the Breath Connection Program
ASIN: 0609803697

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: Another breakthrough exposing the medical establishment
Comments: This book was very helpful in eliminating my exercise induced asthma. The principles and theory are very valid. I have been suffering from insomnia and mild asthma for many years and I do not like to take drugs if I can avoid it. I was also diagnosed as having sleep apnea and treated for that condition though without lasting results. This book shows why asthma develops in people and how you can control it and then cure it without any drugs. The only reason I gave the book four stars was the fact that this book does not spell out the actual 5-day treatment so I went and bought the book 'Breathing Free' by Teresa Hale. With the help of that book, I could administer the treatment to myself at home and saw some remarkable improvements in my sleep and a complete disappearance of my wheezing during running! I also lost some weight! I highly recommend both books. I am actually consulting with the the author for a fee to continue my application of the treatment program for maximum and long-lasting results. I start to wonder why our medical establishment seem to prefer expensive drug therapies for everything when there are so many simple and non-invasive treatments out there. Could the drug companies be involved in this attitude ? I wonder.
The Asthma Sourcebook
ASIN: 0737300167

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: This book is a great help .
Comments: This book was very helpful to me in being an informed health care consumer for my child. I especially found the detailed medication section helpful. My son's asthma had progressed from being mild to moderate and the thorough review of current medication options was very helpful. I purchased the book based on the fact that a pulmonary nurse clinician had recommended it. I am a nurse practicioner in women's health and value the recommendation from another practicioner who is involved in educating her patients regarding their conditon. This book really helped me in making informed decisions along with my son's pediatrician.
How to Become a Former Asthmatic
ASIN: 0688012205

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: A Life Changing Book
Comments: My husband was a severe asthmatic. He had been hospitalized several times and nearly died. He was only 25 years old! After the asthma attacks, he would be so weak and debilitated he could barely walk. He was unable to work for months. Our lives revolved around his ability to breathe without wheezing. After hearing Mr. Sorvino on a talk show, I got this book for my husband. After learning the breathing exercises, my husband has not had an asthma attack in three years! Even today, he still uses these exercises. This book totally changed our lives. My thanks to Mr. Sorvino for sharing his story with us.
The Lion Who Had Asthma
ASIN: 0807545600

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: The Lion who had Asthma
Comments: This is a great book to help kids with Asthma realize that breathing treatments with a nebulizer are not always fun -- but they can turn it into fun just like the boy in the book. My daughter had a different view of the required breathing treatments after reading this book. We were lucky enough to come across it at our local library but Santa might just have to bring it for Christmas this year!
Taking Charge of Asthma : A Lifetime Strategy
ASIN: 0471247049

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: A "Must-Own" for Anyone with Asthma!
Comments: This book is an easy-to-follow discussion of what asthma is(in layman's terms, NOT all medical jargon)and how to successfully handle it. Topics discussed are such as: finding the "triggers" to your asthma problem (i.e. food allergies, environmental allergies...), making the most of the least medications, holistic treatments that might help, how parents can help their children...and the list goes on. Of all the books I have looked at on this subject, this one seems to "cover all the bases" without being too bogged down. A quick, easy reference.
The American Lung Association Family Guide to Asthma and Allergies, 1ed
ASIN: 0316038156

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: Amazing common sense for a governmental publication
Comments: This book provides a good baseline start for controlling environmental allergies for parents with highly allergic or asthmatic children. Of course, the parents themselves can also benefit by following the procedures indicated in the book. Two things that I did not find in the book were: a comprehensive plan for dealing with food allergies/food sensivities, and also what nutritional supplements people with allergies/asthma should be taking. With regard to the second comment, megadoses of Vitamin C should be taken by all people who have allergies and/or asthma, because high doses of Vitamin C block mast cell degranulation, which inhibits histamine release (thus Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine). Also, Vitamin C has a bronchodilator effects.
Black Cumin: The Magical Egyptian Herb for Allergies, Asthma, Skin Conditions, and Immune Disorders
ASIN: 0892818433

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Contains many useful recipes for different ailments
Comments: I have some Black Cumin seed from a website called www.blackseedusa.com and the book contains many wonderful recipes to use the Black Cumin seeds and oil for different ailments. I am eagerly waiting for the authors to write another book on the subject. To be sure you have the true Black Cumin always look for the botanical name "Nigella sativa"
Children With Asthma: A Manual for Parents
ASIN: 0914625217

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Recommend highly
Comments: This book became my single source for reference about asthma. Till I found this book, I was reading anything and everything that I could find on the net about asthma. My 3 year old had an asthma episode as a result of a viral infection. She has an excellent pediatrician and we chose to care for her at home. I got great comfort in knowing that the things we did intuitively were the recommended things in this book. It helps to have a good doctor. It also helps to have this book as a friend. While I was freaking out that my daughter had asthma, this book helped me calm down cos I realized that it could be worse. My heart goes out to all the children who suffer. If you are a parent of a young child with asthma, read this book. It will help you understand what asthma is all about in plain words and give you an idea of what you can do to make your child's life more comfortable by learning to identify the symptoms and manage your child's asthma better. Make sure you have a good doctor, too!
Sinus Survival: The Holistic Medical Treatment for Allergies, Asthma, Bronchitis, Colds, and Sinusitis
ASIN: 0874778077

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: there is hope!
Comments: This book has given me hope for a better quality of life. I am not able to try all the herbs because I am nursing but the yeast diet has changed my overall health. I don't recommend doing everything he says in the diet or you won't eat much but just cutting out sugar and bad carbohydrates I have been healthy and my last cold didn't turn into the usual nightmare sinus infection I always get! Now my brother is reading my book and I recommend to friends suffering with sinus problems. Exercising is possible for me now and is keeping me healthier. The fatigue is getting better now too. I think if you can do the herbs you will have even better results than me. This book has really helped me!

Essential Guide to Asthma
ASIN: 0743403576

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: A Good Source of Information on Asthma
Comments: This excellent book includes information on the causes and various types of asthma, describes what happens to the body during an asthma attack, and provides a comprehensive list of medications (giving both generic and brand names), how they work, and detailed instructions on their use and side effects. The thorough resource guide lists additional reading resources, as well as alternative therapies. The core of the book is about working with your physician to control your asthma, explaining why tests and journals are a necessary part of that process. This book is an excellent source of information for anyone with asthma. I highly recommend it.
Zoey and the Zones: A Story for Children with Asthma
ASIN: 0971812004

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Zoey and the Zones, A story for Children withAsthma
Comments: What a delightful, well written and illustrated, colorful, book for our "little folks" that have asthma. Also found it to be enjoyable to kids without asthma. A great learning and teaching tool to help, children, parents or just about anyone understand this sometimes misunderstood chronic illness. Recommended for anyone who has or knows or just wants to find out about asthma.
Asthma: The Complete Guide to Self Management of Asthma and Allergies for Patients and Their Families
ASIN: 0449215628

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: Very thorough and informative, slightly out of date
Comments: I found this book very informative; it's one of the first "self help" books that was available for asthma. Some of the treatment regimens are out of date with current thinking, but still very helpful (the book was copyright 1987).
Asthma Free in 21 Days: The Breakthrough Mind-Body Healing Program
ASIN: 0062515977

Customer's Rating: 1
Summary: Would you deal with diabetes this way?
Comments: This book fell far short of my expectations. It focused on a few things that may trigger asthma, but discussed them as if they were the disease process itself. Especially confusing is that this book offers an approach that disables the person with asthma (limiting his or her choice), but couches this disability in terms of acceptance, personal liberation and self-actualization. Most people with asthma (about 95%) can live perfectly normal, active lives that are rarely affected by the disease. Asthma does not have to be the centerpiece of their self-identification. Asthma is a controllable disease. Follow the approach of these authors, and the disease controls you. Their approach is not much different than telling a child not to run around - thereby limiting his or her social and physical development - instead of administering appropriate preventive medication. Asthma is a lifelong chronic inflammatory disease of the lungs with multiple phenotypes. The disease process is characterized by airway inflammation. Everyone has a unique set of asthma triggers. Some people's asthma may be triggered by attitudes, belief systems, and behavior, although the most common triggers are environmental exposure and upper respiratory infections. Recent research in peer-reviewed journals indicates that airway remodeling can result when the inflammation process is not controlled through anti-inflammatory therapy. In other words, a reversible airway disease becomes static, cellular composition is permanently altered, and pulmonary function is compromised. Take the F.U.N. approach at your own risk. Pulmonary function deteriorates as part of the aging process. Research consistently shows that people with asthma who control the inflammation process with daily anti-inflammatory medication and reduce exposure to allergens have stronger pulmonary function as they age. And people with asthma who do not use anti-inflammatory medications suffer marked deterioration of pulmonary function as they age. New evidence is starting to emerge that asthma not treated with anti-inflammatory medication also is linked to increased hyper-reactivity of the airways. In other words, their lungs become "twitchy" with smaller and smaller exposures triggering inflammation. Their lives become increasingly restricted. If publishers were liable for medical malpractice awards, readers would have to sign consent forms waiving their rights to redress before they could buy irresponsible feel-good books like this. In summary, asthma is a chronic disease of the lungs. Work in partnership with your doctor or nurse practitioner to find the appropriate medication to control the airway inflammation process. Once you have control of the pharmacotherapy, then try alternative or complementary medical approaches, and measure their efficacy by how much you can reduce your anti-inflammatory medication without increasing symptoms or need for urgent medical services, or restricting activity. Good luck.

Living Well with Asthma
ASIN: 1572300515

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Living well with Asthma
Comments: This is a great book, very down to earth and practical. It is intended mostly for adults suffering from asthma, but I think it would also be good for family members to read and it gives information on living with children with asthma too. The authors focus, not on the medical aspects of asthma, but on the day to day lives of asthma sufferers and how they can better handle problems in such areas as sex life, family relationships and work. The authors give concrete examples of specific problems and easy to understand solutions. They also give many case illustrations from their work with asthmatics. Most importantly, the book is easy and interesting to read. I was able to pick it up and read just the sections I most wanted to know about without feeling lost. I strongly recommend this book to asthma sufferers and their friends and relatives, as well as to health professionals who want to get a clearer picture of what asthma sufferers and their families go through and how to help them.
Understanding Asthma (Understanding Health and Sickness Series)
ASIN: 1578061423

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: An Impressive Work
Comments: I came to this book as it was recommended to me by a friend. I am not usually a fan of medical work, but I found this book to be entrhalling. The clarity and luminity in which Dr. Lieberman explains the many facets of this illness is enlightening. I was especially impressed that even though I had no real background in this field I was easily able to understand the concepts and ideas put forth. Dr. Lieberman is a medical genius who deserves far more recognition across the world, and not just in the medical field. I recommend this book to anyone who appreciates works of intelligence, clarity and thoughtfulness.
Nature's Medicines : From Asthma to Weight Gain, from Colds to High Cholesterol -- The Most Powerful All-Natural Cures
ASIN: 1579540287

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: The Natural Way to Good Health
Comments: Although it is not as definitive as the editors would have you believe, "Nature's Medicines" quite thoroughly covers a number of herbs, vitamins and other supplements. The book is divided into 3 sections for easy reference: What You Need to Know About Supplements; The Powerhouse of Nature's Medicines; and Fighting Disease with Supplements. The first chapter discusses the role that vitamins, minerals and other supplements play in your health. The second chapter discusses the efficacy of numerous supplements, to include side effects and interaction precautions. The third chapter is a very thorough discussion of numerous diseases/ailments (such as AIDS, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, headaches, cancer, Alzheimers, etc.)and what supplements are most beneficial to those suffering from them. If I could only have one book on natural supplements, this is the one I would choose: it's a very useful reference.
