Textbook of Ayurveda
ASIN: 1883725070
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: A must have for the Ayurvedic student! Comments: Thank you Vasant Lad for this great tool that helps one unlock the truth called Ayurveda. Vasant Lad has presented a true text book that will become a companion of the modern day Ayurvedic student. Normally if one was to source concise information on the fundamentals of Ayurveda then one had the difficult task of studying the translations of Caraka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Vagbhata Samhita. While these texts are the foundation for modern Ayurveda they can be daunting to the student new to this amazing science. The only other method was to correlate information from books written by Vasant Lad, David Frawley, Atreya, Robert Svoboda, Subhash Ranade, Maya Tiwari etc... and then one would build up a collection of information from different sources. Whilst this is not a bad thing (and I will continue to read books offered from these great teachers) finding enough detailed information was sometimes very hard. "The Text Book of Ayurveda: Fundamental Principles" is truly amazing. It is a must for the serious student of Ayurveda. Vasant Lad has indicated that this if the first of three, the next two dealing with; the clinical assessment of health and disease, and the management of disease. The contents of this book is vast, it covers all aspects of the philosophical foundation that Ayurveda stands upon, The Tridosha, Agni, The Seven Dhatu, The Fifteen Srotas, Ojas, Tejas, Prana, Digestion and Nutrition, to be honest this does no justice to what is actually in this textbook. Get it!

Ayurvedic Cooking for Self Healing (2nd Edition)
ASIN: 1883725054
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: The best! Comments: This Ayurvedic cookbook is well suited for the beginner as well as an experienced cook. There is an introduction to Ayurveda and dosha specific eating presented in the beginning of the book. This will help you receive full benefit of the receipies and suggestions given. However if you do not care about Ayurveda the book still provides you with some of the most interesting and tasy Indian receipies (of course all vegetarian) I have had. Mrs. Lad's easy to follow instructions and down to earth approach to Indian cooking makes for an easy and succesful outcome of the cooking adventure. Great book, definitely a must in any Indian-food lover's collection.

Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies
ASIN: 0609802860

The Ayurveda Encyclopedia: Natural Secrets to Healing, Prevention, and Longevity
ASIN: 0965804224
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: Uomotenero Comments: Yes, it's a 'monumental' work, but only from the perspective of someone that values the meaning of an Ayurvedic Science in terms of the accumulated information...
Unfortunately, it can not be helpful to people, who are not too familiar with Vedic philosophy and practice, in the contemporary Western world. I've also asked many Ayurvedic practitioners, about their intelectual experience of this book. Similarly, many of us were disapointed, regardless of the country, ie. USA, Europe or even India.
There are many great books on this timless subject, just to mention few authors like: David Frawley, Vasant Lad, Robert Svoboda, Maya Tiwari and Atreya.

Ayurvedic Cooking for Westerners
ASIN: 0914955144
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: There are better Ayurvedic cookbooks Comments: I own this book (ACFW) and The Ayurvedic Cookbook (TAC) and I must say that I rarely open this one, while I use at least 3 recipes out of TAC every week. The problem is that while this book stays true to the principles of Ayurvedia, the recipes aren't as tasty as they could be. This book tends to follow the Western macrobiotic ideals of "steam some rice, steam some veggies, let's eat", where TAC uses a wide array of spices. Comparing side by side similiar recipes, TAC's carrots and parsnips has about a half dozen spices, while ACFW's carrots, parsnips and peas has none. Which do you want to eat? This comparison is valid for many other recipes as well, which is somewhat disturbing given the importance TAC places on spices as a part of Ayurvedia. This book seems aimed at the more political/masochistic Western vegetarian (there is a sidebar on being nice to meat-eaters) who sees bland food as some kind of right of passage. While there's good information on Ayurvedia, you can do better with The Ayurvedic Cookbook.

The Ayurvedic Cookbook
ASIN: 0914955063
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: THE VERY BEST BOOK YOU CAN BUY FOR YOUR HEALTH! Comments: Bob Sachs, author of "Tibetan Ayurveda", recommended this book to me. I feel that Tibetan Medicine is the best system of medicine. They believe that behavior determines health. But the second variable is food. Their system is ayurvedic. Based on body types. But they don't have a suitable book out for sale. This book is Indian Ayurvedic. Which is about 90% the same. Each menu will tell you in numbers how much it matches your body type. And there are other symbols which tell you about seasons and tastes and so forth. This is all really quite simple. But I don't follow this book. My reason is Indian Cooking. All the meals are cooked using Indian Cooking. You are supposed to put mustard seeds on the frying pan and as soon as they start to pop, you start to put in other ingredients. It has to do with timing. You don't want the mustard seeds burnt or black. This is a small thing, I suppose. But I bailed out when I got to that. I do think that this book will give you the very best health care outside of good behavior. Thank you and happy eating.

Ayurveda Revolutionized: Integrating
ASIN: 0914955381
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: This book changed my life! Comments: As an Ayurveda practitioner for the last nine years I highly recommend this book which offers a new slant on this ancient system of healing. This book changed my thinking about Ayurveda, and truly "revolutionized" the way I work with clients. In it, the author claims to have rediscovered a more ancient system of Ayurveda that goes back to a time when Ayurveda and a True Science Of The Stars were one system. This system focuses less on Constitution, and instead places emphasis on the way the body goes out of balance, which he calls the Seven Disease Tendencies. This is a controversial book because it challenges our assumptions about Ayurveda, but if approached with an open mind it could yield great riches for you.

Body, Mind and Sport: The Mind-Body Guide to Lifelong Health, Fitness, and Your Personal Best
ASIN: 0609807897
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Ayurveda and Yoga For Everbody Comments: As a person who follows Ayurvedic health principles and has a regular yoga practice, I was already familiar with most of the concepts presented in this book. My fitness and athletic performance have greatly benefitted from these principles. However, this is the first book I have read that really applies the pricniples to fitness and athletic competition. The book has several techniques that I already knew, but did not consider applying to athletics as described in the book. I have been doing the breathing method described for years, but never considered actually doing it during competition. It works.
When I first found this book I did not look closely at it and assumed it was another slick marketing gimmick riding the mind-body trend. Then I attended one of the author's lectures at a yoga conference and recognized that Mr. Douillard has a throrough knowledge of Ayurveda. Although Ayurveda and Yoga are becoming more well known for their general health benefits, Mr. Douillard is one of the few to properly apply these principle to fitness and athletic competition.
The best part about this book is that anyone can read it and immediately benefit from it regardless of age or physical condition. No previous knowledge of Ayurveda and Yoga required. The author takes very sophisticated knowledge and methods from the sciences of Ayurveda and Yoga and presents them in a form Americans can readily understand. The concepts are normally part of more structured teachings and usually include extensive Sanskrit terminology. For example, the mind-body constitutions Vata, Pitta, Kapha are renamed Winter, Summer, Spring in the book. Also, the breathing technique Ujjayi Pranayama is referred to as Darth Vader breathing. While these innovative synonyms might make a room full of experienced practitioners cringe, they are perfect to convey powerful knowledge to an audience that would be confused by or indifferent to more precise terminology. My only criticism of the book is that some of the descriptions of the techniques are not as well presented as they could be. While they are adequate, they are better presented in other yoga books. Regardless of how the techniques are presented, any reader would greatly benefit from taking a few yoga classes. Virtually all of the techniques described in the book are introduced in the first few classes at the beginners level.

Ayurveda: A Life of Balance
ASIN: 089281490X
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Forced to enter a one-line summary of my review Comments: As far as I'm aware, there are only 2 books in existence that are vegetarian ayurvedic cookbooks--this one and "The Healing Cuisine" by Harish Johari; and i most highly recommend them both. (I do no recommend "the ayurvedic cookbook" by Morningstar... it is not veggie and really just a disappointment in terms of ingredients and the recipes). Tiwari is a very nice compliment to Dr. Lad's "Ayurveda: the science of self-healing", which is *the* definitive modern introduction to ayurveda. Tiwari's perspective is much more cosmic, poetic, and much about vibrational healing, cognitive memory and DNA alignment. As one reviewer noted, she makes reference to Hinduism and the more complex aspects of the mechanics of ayurvedic energetics that, even to those relatively familiar, will feel like walking thru mud... Visual representations and diagrams would be helpful, which this book is essential devoid of. That is my only complaint. the text could certainly be edited down to make room for more visuals. This is a complete guide for someone dedicated to an ayurvedic lifestyle--with charts covering the energetics and qualities of just about every food and their vibrational alignment with the body types, and daily and seasonal menus for the body types, all 10 of them. There is, among many things, a section on food sadhanas, or the ritualization of the nourishment process (food prep, cooking and eating). There are listings of ingredients and there's a glossary in the back of the more uncommon ingredients. She does not give much treatment to yoga asanas and pranayama, though there is treatment of daily routines. Now, unlike Johari, the recipes are all explicitly coded with respect to the 10 body types and the 4 seasons (i.e., which body types the recipes will help to balance and the season(s) in which they should be used)... A rather in-depth practical working guide to ayurvedic cooking. This along with Dr. Lad, and you're doing good.

The Book of Ayurveda: A Holistic Approach to Health and Longevity
ASIN: 0684800179
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Excelent Introduction Comments: This is often the first book I loan to friends who are interested in learning about Ayurveda(I own two copies!). The photographs and illustraitons flesh out concepts that are hard to grasp with words alone. Holistic in its approach, this excelent introduction also contains a good deal of information that can be put into immediate use. More than worth the price.

Ayurvedic Healing: A Comprehensive Guide
ASIN: 8120809572
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: One of the best books in English on Ayurveda Comments: ~I have read dozens of books on Ayurveda published in English; this stands out as simply the best of what I have read.
It is sensitive, sympathetic to the conditions discussed, and lucid. A great work. So many others have been based on (and written with) excellent information and the best of intentions, but somehow have ended up being more confusing than helpful... even in something as basic as classifying doshas, I never really grasped them clearly until I read this book, which is laid out~~ calmly, clearly, and with massive knowledge and experience underlying its clarity. Again, an excellent book by someone who also seems to be a great human being-- it flows through all his words.~

Heaven's Banquet : Vegetarian Cooking for Lifelong Health the Ayurveda Way
ASIN: 0525943838
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Keeps me on the Ayurvedic wagon! Comments: Before this book, I'd be a devoted Ayurvedic cook for about one week and then fall off the wagon when I got bored "eating Indian" at every meal. Hospodar's recipies are varied (providing Ayurvedic versions of well-loved dishes from around the world) and their flavours and seasonings diverse (even finding favour with my non-vegetarian husband who claims the Moussaka on p. 96 is the "best dish" I make). Other family faves--scones, paella, squash with wild rice succotash, dal II, chili (be prepared for a taste surprise--it's not your traditional chili, but if I don't call it "chili" I always get compliments on the unique seasonings in this dish). Not only are the recipes simple to make, they're also easy to adapt, allowing even the non-experimental cook like me the joy of substituting ingredients and still having it turn out okay! Hospodar's introduction to Ayurveda is an adequate first overview, but those interested will learn more about this ancient practice by reading Robert Svoboda or Nancy Lonsdorf's books. I also found a better background on Ayurveda in the first Morningstar cookbook (although her recipes, while delicious, are pretty much all "Indian" in taste).
I recommend this over any other Ayurvedic cookbook--and I've used several over the past 8 years. These recipes allow practitioners of Ayurveda to eat standard fare ("what's available elsewhere") without straying from a path to good health and balance. No need to be suspect of this review: I was introduced to this book at a panchakarma retreat so can't be counted as a friend or relative--just a grateful reader!

Contemporary Ayurveda: Medicine and Research in Maharishi Ayur-Veda (Medical Guides to Complementary and Alternative Medicine)
ASIN: 0443055947
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Very good combination of practical and scientific Comments: I bought this book on Amazon after it was recommended to me by a local medical doctor who is also trained in Ayurveda and incorporates Maharishi Ayuvedic practices in his clinic. I have been frustrated with the bulk of Aurvedic texts available on-line and in my city, which barely skim the surface of Ayurveda and certainly don't attempt to review the scientific literature on Ayurveda. I found this book to have a reasonably good coverage of the history of Ayurveda, a quite good presentation of the theoretical base of Ayurveda (though they perhaps go a bit over the top trying to link quantum physics to Ayurveda-- I myself am not trained in quantum physics, and I respectfully doubt the authors are...), and a good coverage of practical Ayurveda, with a liberal and much-appreciated sprinkling of well-documented references to the scentific literature on Ayurveda. Recommended for those who'd like to have a solid base on which to build their study of Ayurveda.

Planetary Herbology
ASIN: 0941524272
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Wonderful Book, everyone should have a copy Comments: I have every single one of this authors books. The information in them is terrific, including this one. It covers the different types of herbal philosophies. Mainly the Chinese and Ayurvedic systems. He integrates them both with western herbs, and makes it work. I won't say his book has everything and every herb but it has a lot, and some of the more unusual herbs you usually can't find in the regular every day herb books. It's wonderful, and worth every penny you pay for it

Beautiful layout, art work and easy to read text, charts and photographs. This is not a how to manual but a layman's manual of concepts.

Self-Recovery: Treating Addictions Using Transcendental Meditation and Maharishi Ayur-Veda
ASIN: 1560230444
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Very inspiring Comments: Charles Alexander's book, Self Recovery is particulary helpful because it includes many different experiences with recovering from drug abuse. In some, the recovery is simple and immediate with beginning the regular practice of TM. He also gives examples of more difficult cases where recovery is interrupted and regained several times before self recovery is achieved. The study imvolving alcoholics living on the street was especially important as it showed that by adding a stress management strategy to a traditional treatment program, some actual progress was made where progress is not usually seen.
That there is a stress management technique effective enough to break the grip of drug addiction is exciting. That it is sometimes challenging to keep people on the program is realistic. That it is sometimes incredibly easy and immediate is corroberated in the prioneering work on TM that Dr. Herbert Benson and Dr. Keith Wallace did at Harvard in the early 70's. It is described in Benson's book, The Relaxation Response.
Dr. Alexander's book is timely. The only real way to win the war on drugs is to reduce the demand for drugs. TM is a useful tool in establing self sufficiency, clear thinking and success in life.

Ayurveda and the Mind
ASIN: 0914955365
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: ayurvedic psychology Comments: This is an EXCELLENT book. Abstract and very deep truths are lucidly conveyed without sacrificing intricacy or impact. If you are interested in psychology, spirituality, or Ayurveda, this is a wonderful, unique book. Dr. Frawley is extremely thorough and brings much integrity to his work. This book may be a bit much for some, but those truly interested in furthing their awareness will find many treasures in these pages. If you are looking for an intro to ayurveda, start with something else, like Dr. Frawley's "Yoga and Ayurveda."

Ayurvedic Healing Cuisine
ASIN: 0892819383
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Ayurvedic Healing Cuisine Comments: Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine from India that emphasizes the healing properties of food. As Harish Johari says, "food is something very personal and it should never be eaten for taste alone; its purpose is to provide nutrients and satisfaction to the body, without introducing toxins." Johari, a Tantric and Ayurvedic scholar, wrote twelve books, as well as produced audiocassettes and CDs, before his death in 1999. Ayurvedic Healing Cuisine: 200 Vegetarian Recipes for Health, Balance, and Longevity, published posthumously, "explains the healing qualities of various foods and spices and recommends combinations appropriate for specific conditions of body and mind." Johari first introduces the principles of Ayurveda, fully discussing the role of the five elements and describing the doshas--a way of classifying body types and temperments. He also explains that there are six tastes--sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent. Each of the tastes has a different effect on the body. Foods are further classified as to whether they are hot or cold and heavy or light. These attributes also affect the body in various ways. Understanding how foods interact with one another and how they effect the body provides a foundation for healthy eating. Johari maintains that "most diseases are the result of wrong eating habits and/or of eating antagonist foods." He also includes information on the nutrients in food, such as protein and vitamins. That's followed by a section describing the healing properties of specific foods. He suggests using milk as a source of protein, rather than meat or eggs. The bulk of the book is devoted to recipes, including how to prepare various Indian spice mixtures. All of the recipes are Westernized versions of Indian foods and use ingredients that can be obtained in the West. Many are prepared using a wok. Johari presents recipes for snacks, dals, main dishes, salads, condiments, breads, desserts, and beverages. Appendices include menu suggestions, and several special recipes for children and the elderly. He finishes with a list of spice and specialty food suppliers. Readers interested in applying the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda healing to contemporary lifestyles will find both an excellent reference and delicious recipes in Ayurvedic Healing Cuisine.

The Aromatherapy Companion: Medicinal Uses, Ayurvedic Healing, Body Care Blends, Perfumes and Scents, Emotional Health and Well-Being
ASIN: 1580171508
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Ancient Memories Comments: Having had the opportunity to study personally with Victoria Edwards, the author of this lovely compilation of ancient wisdom concerning Aromatherapy, I am greatful for the organization of the information in her book. In studying with Victoria I can vouch for her life-long devotion to the study, practice and teaching of Aromatherapy but it was, at times, difficult to tell where in the forest we were in the study as we delved deeply into the various facets of this discipline. Her book conveys the esoteric aspects of Aromatherapy while organizing it in a comprehensive manner so that one also attains a sense of history of this important healing art as well as a sense of direction and orientation during your study. A must on the shelf of any serious devotee of Aromatherapy yet written clearly and concisely providing an excellent manual for the beginner as well.

The One Earth Herbal Sourcebook: Everything You Need to Know About Chinese, Western, and Ayurvedic Herbal Treatments
ASIN: 1575666170
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: One of the best herb books ever written Comments: I have a degree in Chinese herbs and at least 50 books on herbs. This is one of the best. The author reviews Chinese, Western and Ayurvedic herbs. He includes research and little known facts about the herbs. There are chapters on different diseases and the herbs that will treat them, including HIV, cancer, diabetes and thyroid problems. There is a great explanation of the immune system, with each component explained very clearly, along with herbs that have been proven to affect that specific function. Which herbs boost interferon and which ones boost NK cells? What is tumor necrosis factor and what herbs stimulate it?
There is a seamless integration of Naturopathic and allopathic. For example: Cases of hyperthyroidism and of hypothyroidism were confirmed via blood test. Hyperthyroidism correlated with a yin deficiency diagnosis and hypothyroidism with a yang deficiency diagnosis. As would be expected. Everyone who loves herbs should have a copy of this book!

Ayurveda and Aromatherapy, Earth Guide
ASIN: 0914955209
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: walking the talk Comments: This book is essentially a complete users manual on how to apply essential oils in a manner consistent with Ayurvedic healing. From start to finish this book radiates sincerity and hands on knowledge. We immediately believe that the authors are not simply talking the talk but are walking the talk. The book opens with an introduction to Ayurveda, including the 5 elements, 3 doshas and 6 tastes. The 15 subdoshas are described along with a description of typical symptoms of imbalances and essential oils that balance those doshas. The authors provide a novel analysis of the effects of essential oils using two of the three taste polarities:1) hot-cold and 2)wet-dry. This allows them to classify the essential oils in terms of their effects on the doshas.
The chapters describing the history and manufacture of essential oils are informative and full of interesting anedotes. Other useful features include: how to apply essential oils with compress, in the bath, inhalation etc.: methods on how to choose essentials oils; a complete list of herbs and their healing attributes; a list of Ayurvedic healing centers; a list of suppliers of essential oils; and references to explore further the concepts and methods presented. Anyone interested in a practical introduction to Ayurveda, Aromatherapy or both is likely to benefit from a study of this book. (1/10/2000).

Pocket Guide to Ayurvedic Healing
ASIN: 0895947641
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Great personal book for keeping your lifestyle in check.
Comments: There are so many books on diet, health, and nutrition, finding something that specifically applies to you seems impossible. After reading the Pocket Guide to Ayurvedic Healing, I am for the first time getting a handle on my health. This book provides an easy to understand (with everyday examples) wholistic approach to the "science of life." I was amazed at how easy it was to follow. Once you find out your unique constitution, found by taking a 20-question test, you can quickly determine what your basic requirements are for optimal health. Keeping the balance is the name of the game. The author gives you plenty of ideas and resources for keeping your lifestyle in check. Although the principles were derived from India, the author has translated these ancient principles into contemporary times with herbs and foods that you can easily find in your health food store. After carrying this little pocket book around for a short time for quick reference, I suddenly knew how to take care of my health. My friends call me Doc now. I highly recommend this book for anyone trying to stay healthy in these crazy times.

The Healing Cuisine: India's Art of Ayurvedic Cooking
ASIN: 0892813822
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: Some information about the author would be appreciated Comments: I found the best part of the book to be the theory sections including the sections about ingredients which includes summaries on the qualities and health benefits of different foods.. Even so it is not an exhaustive list of foods.. For example, the author doesn't mention avocado, asparagus, celery, mushrooms, jackfruit or broccoli even though there are recipes that call for them... There is information about other ingredients however, like tomatoes, grapefruits, turnips, carrots, lemons, potatoes etc.. and particularly interesting the information about spices. The recipes are interesting in that some use vegetables like celery and broccoli which are readily available in a western grocery yet previously uncommon to indian cooking. Also the recipes are health conscious with greater use of ghee rather than oil, and jaggery in sweets instead of refined sugar. Many recipes are run of the mill home-style north indian cookery which is good for the newcomer to north indian cooking but less interesting for the regular north indian cook. Finally i would like to know something about the author. Most books especially those offering advice on health include some information about the author's training, history and professional background. I would like to know where he learned about ayurveda? Is he self-taught? If the author is a world renowned scholar, as is claimed on the book cover, i think the reader has the right to know about his credentials in order to afford greater credibility to his book.
