The Bald Truth : The First Complete Guide To Preventing And Treating Hair Loss
ASIN: 0671047639

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: A Truly Inspirational and Informative Book!
Comments: This extremely well written book is truly The First COMPLETE Guide to Preventing and Treating Hair Loss. Kobren's approach is quite refreshing. He provides the reader with every thing he/she needs to make an informed decision about combating hair loss. After reading his book I had a better understanding of what my options were and what to avoid. I was able to relate to his personal struggle which gave me a sense of kinship with the author. I think that his efforts have already had a profoundly positive impact on this insidious and parasitic industry. I was horrified to see what had happened to The Hair Restoration Casualties and was left with a feeling of empowerment after putting the book down. I refer to it almost on a daily basis. It's much easier to turn to this handy guide than to search the net for info which is usually conflicting. Kobren takes a strong stand and tells it like it is. He doesn't pull any punches and that's what makes this book so powerful. I recently began to listen to his radio program in LA. His sincerity is at times overwhelming and adds to his credibility. His delivery is both inspiring and compassionate. Even though he tries to bring new subject matter to each show he is still willing to go off topic to answer all the questions that come his way, no matter how silly some may be. He treats people with the utmost respect and ads a sense of dignity to talk radio that is seldom heard. I admire this man more than mere words can say. He has been able to bring attention to this devastating problem in a way that no one in history has ever been able accomplish. He has answered my countless e-mail questions with intelligent and enlightening answers. I want to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Kobren for what he has done. He has provided me with hope and I can't thank him enough. I know it's been said here before, but God bless you Spencer. If you believe in karma, your in for a wonderful life. If I could give it TEN stars I would!
The Truth About Women's Hair Loss: What Really Works for Treating and Preventing Thinning Hair
ASIN: 0809224887

Customer's Rating: 1
Summary: Doesn't even cover the basics
Comments: This is an extremely superficial book on hair loss. You can find out more on the internet in about 15 minutes than you can by reading this book. Nearly half of the book is devoted to transplants, wigs, etc. rather than talking about WHY people lose hair and what can be done about it short of these drastic measures. So many women suffer from hair loss that is treatable and this book does not offer any real help or advice. Stick to the internet and the wealth of knowledge available on hair loss sites.
Hair Savers for Women: A Complete Guide to Preventing and Treating Hair Loss
ASIN: 0609804456

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Enormously Helpful
Comments: If you're a woman who is in a panic after recently discovering hair loss (thinning or baldness), this is the book for you. It gives a good, basic overview of medical and alternative therapies and hair care, grooming, and cosmetic issues. Also, it suggests how to talk to your doctor about hair loss and what questions, tests, and physical examinations your doctor should respond with. This books helps with the fear and frustration of female hair loss. Highly recommended.
So You're Going Bald : A Man's Guide to the Art of PowerBalding
ASIN: 0967174007

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: The baldfaced truth
Comments: I was expecting this to be a sequel to Eugene Ionesco's The Bald Soprano, but silly me, it's actually about being bald, which has nothing to do with the famous French playwright's play, despite its title. Nor does the play have anything to do with the recent popular cable TV drama, since it was written several decades before the show premiered, even though James Gandolfini looks like a pretty good "Bald Soprano" to me. But then Nietzsche's book, The Gay Science, has nothing to do with the Gay/Lesbian scene, either.
As someone who's hairline is receding even faster than his stock portfolio (which is saying something these days), or whose scalp is being denuded faster than the Brazilian rainforest at an industrial defoliants convention, I found this to be a valuable book on how to cope with baldness. You can't have too many books about balding in your library, I always say, and this one is chock full of valuable advice. Highly recommended.
Bald No More
ASIN: 1575663082

Customer's Rating: 3
Summary: Useful book but focused on one product
Comments: Dr Walker's book is about the usage of a certain product to stop hair loss. I was expecting more objective information; sometimes it looks more like publicity than a scientific review of hair loss treatments. Anyway, I rate it 3 stars because there are good chapters about what hair is, its phases, and nutrition advice. Compared to "The Bald Truth" by Spencer David Kobren, "Bald No More" comes second.
Hair! : Mankind's Historic Quest to End Baldness
ASIN: 0812991583

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Covering a Big Problem
Comments: A bright and funny book, _Hair! Mankind's Historic Quest to End Baldness_ (AtRandom.com) by Gersh Kuntzman takes up the causes, stigma, and above all the treatments for baldness. It has a hilarious and scary section on the quack cures for the "loathsome disease," but concentrates on the real cures or crutches. There are now treatments for baldness, the "drugs" part of the amusingly named trilogy of cures: drugs, rugs, and plugs. Drugs available now for baldness are Rogaine and Propecia, and they both work in a limited way. There is a peculiar difficulty for researchers in field of baldness treatment. They can publish small, tentative, preliminary reports in the most obscure technical journals. All of a sudden they are inundated by requests from bald men who want to get the treatment, and if there is no treatment ready, they want to get into the test groups immediately, and if they can't get into the test groups, they accuse the investigators of being in a large, undefined conspiracy against bald men. The volumes of mail and complaints about treatments that are not yet in existence have meant that researchers had no time for research, having to spend it all on public relations.
Rugs are given an amusing coverage (sorry) in the book, but the strangest of superficial treatments are the "hair in a can" varieties. These consist of something like spray-on or spread-on gunk, sometimes chopped up sheep hair. Sheep hair is grated into microscopic pieces, dyed and given a negative static charge so that it sticks to whatever hair remains. A dry cosmetic called DermMatch gets rubbed into the scalp. The company slogan is, "Nothing looks better, stays on better, applies neater, is more healthful, or costs less to use." Kuntzman, a witty reporter, writes, "If that's the company _slogan_, I'd hate the see the employee handbook."
Plugs are no longer the thing. It used to be that hair transplants were cores of little circles of hair plugged into the balding areas. Look closely and a plugged scalp looks like that of a doll. But now there are micro-transplants, teensy cores of three hairs apiece carefully plugged in where they might do the most good. It costs thousands of dollars, and Kuntzman describes the bloody process with enthusiasm. One of the plastic surgeons interviewed who does such operations is himself bald. He says, "I'm a reasonably content guy, and it doesn't bother me enough to go through a surgical procedure. For me, hair loss is no big deal." Maybe not for him, but it is clear that is overall a big deal with big social and financial repercussions. _Hair!_ tells about them with good humor and intelligence. If one of our obligations in life is to spot human foibles and to sympathize and laugh about them, Kuntzman has helped us along.

Comments: Pre-teen girls don't wear wigs - but Anya does, and when Keely and her group find out, they imagine the worst. As Keely discovers more about Anya, she learns important lessons on how best to help in this moving story of an uncertain friendship.
The Big Fall: Living With Hair Loss
ASIN: 0969473419

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Necessary Read
Comments: If you have any form of hair loss, this is a helpful book. It was written in 1992, and she made sure that she didn't cover medical treatments so that it wouldn't be out of date.
Instead, it deals a lot with the emotional and psychological issues that women deal with when they have a form of hairloss. It includes men, somewhat, but not much. But it's information is valuable for people with all types of hair loss, which is nice. It does lean heavy on the side of Alopecia areata as the author has alopecia totalis.
I borrowed the book from the library, but I will be buying a copy as it is a valuable reference for the emotional aspect of this dreaded disease.
