Awareness Through Movement: Easy-to-Do Health Exercises to Improve Your Posture, Vision, Imagination, and Personal Awareness ASIN: 0062503227
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Do you want answers or to learn to ask yourself questions?
Comments: I found an earlier printing of this book in a used bookstore some years ago, and that was my introduction to Feldenkrais method. I went about doing lessons from this book, other books, and cassettes, with some benefit. Then my life got busier and I quit. Only when I developed worse problems did I start up again, this time with a human teacher. The greater difficulties I face this time force a different approach upon me. Before I might have studied the stick figures carefully and tried to reproduce the moves depicted. But I am not the stick model; I cannot act like the stick model except by force. What does my actual nervous system wish to do? Maybe afterwards I can compare what I did with the stick model, but ideally I should have been able to discover the move myself, given similar preliminaries. It is difficult to capture this approach to learning in a book, and thus I judge this book against the limitations it faces. It is not an easy or simple book to use. Books can easily tell you what is "right" and "wrong" to do. They cannot do a good job of pacing alongside an active learner, or notice something unique in that person, etc. But perhaps this book is the best there is with which to spark an appetite for such discovery.

A Zen Approach to Bodytherapy: From Rolf to Feldenkrais to Tanouye Roshi ASIN: 092187202X
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: one man's journey from muscle working to zen energy healing
Comments: The author presents his life story of beginning work on massage
and muscle work, to his learning Rolfing and Feldenkrais, to his work with a Zen Kendo (and healer) master. Along the way,
you are treated with fantastic stories of transformation and healing, all presented in a matter-of-fact way, without ornamentation or (much) philosophy. Rather than trying to proselytize or show why "his way" is the "best way", the author
tells a tale of his personal transformation and growth and the potential inside us all. Highly recommended.

Running With the Whole Body: A 30-Day Program to Running Faster With Less Effort ASIN: 1556432267
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: I Improved Significantly After the First Chapter
Comments: The book applies the Feldenkrais method to running in a very logical way. It begins with the big picture, and then focuses on the details. The exercises in this book are well thought out, and WILL make a difference in your running. I noticed a significant improvement after only the first chapter, and I just kept improving with each subsequent chapter. You begin by studying the relationship between the upper and lower body while walking. The shoulders should move in a direction opposite the hips. Most people, myself included, do not do this properly and it affects breathing and everything else involved in running. I spent an evening working on this, and immediately noticed a huge improvement in my running. Breathing suddenly became easier, and my stride became less jarring. Through each chapter, the improvements continued. This book is a must for every runner. It will make all the difference.

Unbound! Gentle Movement Lessons for Breast Cancer Survivors ASIN: 0967431204
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Listening to your Body
Comments: If you know someone recovering from breast cancer, surely the best gift you could give her is a set of Alice Brydges’ audiotapes: Unbound! These “gentle movement lessons for breast cancer survivors,” are twelve beautifully presented Feldenkrais Method Awareness Through Movement lessons which lead the listening student on a journey towards change and self-discovery. A beautifully illustrated booklet accompanies the set so that the student is given a clear sense of comfortable options for each physical configuration in which a lesson will be done. The need for gentleness and ease in all the movements is emphasized, and it is pointed out that the results will be greater if there is no pain or strain. The booklet concludes with a biography of Moshe Feldenkrais and a helpful list of resources for more information on the Feldenkrais Method as well as a reference section offering suggestions for further reading. The opening comments by students who have benefited from Brydges' lessons are testimony to the integrity of her approach, and to its powerful effect. The calm and strength of Brydges' voice encourage self-respect and appreciation, as she teaches how one can awaken the wisdom of one's body. This is a journey towards finding options in the way one moves as well as a more integrated sense of ones whole self. The key to success in these lessons is enjoyment of them; the inner journey they map out can be transformative. Each lesson is approximately 45 minutes long and develops from simple beginning movements through gradually more complex and challenging ones. In the “Pulling Silk” lesson which concludes the set, soft movements of the hand are joined by those of the foot, then mouth, navel, and pelvic floor, all accumulating into a wonderful lesson on bringing the whole of oneself to a totality of intention in every action. This lesson, in particular, reflects Brydges' experience in Tai Chi, drawing on images of water and waves flowing on a path of least resistance. These tapes are a wonderful way of learning how to listen to one’s body in order to avoid injury and find greater comfort in daily activities. Because they present such a thorough exploration of classic Awareness Through Movement lessons, they are as valuable for the Feldenkrais enthusiast as they are to someone discovering the work for the first time...

Mindful Spontaneity: Lessons in the Feldenkrais Method ASIN: 1556431856
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Bye bye chiropractors
Comments: I used to see a chiropractor for alignments quite often, but since I read and used Mindful Spontaneity I have gained awareness of my back and internal muscles that connect to the back. The result is a beautiful change in my body's structure: I am taller, the curve in my lumbar is gone, and so on. Every vertabrae in my back is moveable and dynamic now. And I haven't visited my Chiropractor since. I also adopted Ruth's blanket exercises that I do most mornings to remove acquired stiffness from my sleep. This book changed my life for the better.
