Nannies Maids and More: The Complete Guide for Hiring Household Help
ASIN: 0961985321

Customer's Rating: 3
Summary: Not so Complete
Comments: "Nannies and More" provides basic and realistic information on establishing and maintaining relationships with household help based on the author's previous experience as owner of a domestic employment agency in Arizona. The work appears to rely solely on this experience, spending an undue amount of space on anecdotes.
Be aware, there are no references to web sites, none. The book is dated or lacking specifics in several areas, i.e. availability of background checks, IRS matters.
If you are new to the role of employer (or have had negative experience in the past) the book provides a good primer, and mirror for contemplating your expectations of possible employees and your approach to them.

Hiring Contractors Without Going Through Hell: How to Find, Hire, Supervise, and Pay Professional Help for Home Renovations and Repairs
ASIN: 0802773818

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: "If You Own A Home You Need To Read This Book"
Comments: "Hiring Contractors" should be read BEFORE you ever consider talking to anyone who might work on your house. The author identifies particular areas to be cautious with contractors to prevent shoddy work or being overcharged. The book advises the best process in choosing, working with and staying in charge of your contractor. If you want to prevent potential aggravation or problems with contractors, this is the book to show you how. The author also well advises the homeowner how to avoid potential lawsuits and hazards in working with "contractors". A very readable and useful book.
The Unofficial Guide to Hiring Contractors (The Unofficial Guide Series)
ASIN: 0028624602

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Help for the helpless
Comments: If I ever do any remodeling again, I'm handing a copy of this book to the contractor! It's so clear on what you should expect from your contractor, and what you can do to make the job move smoothly -- and what to do when the inevitable problems creep in. Speaking of creeps, the contractors I used when I renovated my NYC co-op were the worst -- the work looked great, but they were from Long Island and had failed to do the work to NYC code! The problems wound up costing me hundreds of dollars and hours of time, and the contractors had disappeared by the time the bills came due, even after they swore they'd make the changes themselves at no cost to me. Did I ever have the kind of binding contract this book talks about? Contract -- what's a contract? I was foolish, yes, but I won't be caught in this bind again, thanks to the Unofficial Guide.
