Clear Your Clutter With Feng Shui
ASIN: 0767903595

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: This Book ROCKED my Cluttered Life
Comments: I LOVE THIS BOOK! Clearing your clutter helps you, those that live with you, and those around you. There is an overwhelming amount of literature on the topic of Feng Shui, where does one begin to learn? Karen Kingston's "Clear Your Clutter" will provide the perfect beginning.
Not only does is this book based on clearing tangible clutter but Karen also delves into the INtangible clutter, spiritual, physical, emotional, and mental. She FOCUSES clearly on the reasoning behind clearing clutter...to bring new and better things INTO your life, you must remove the old and musty clutter. Her probing insight leaves questions not only DO you keep clutter, but WHY you keep clutter, are you in denial about your clutter? Was it inherited? Are your parents packrats? Were there old emotional attachments that are now gone?
I had never heard of this book, I just saw it on the shelf in the self-help section and thought, "Now THAT is something I NEED." Truly, this book has helped me to re-evaluate all the "junk" that I have been holding on to for years.
Karen Kingston enlightens her readers by pointing out that clutter in ANY part of your house cultivates weight on/in your life. She shows how the house is divided by the Feng Shui bagua and which sections/corners of your house represent which part of your life. This is about as far as she goes into Feng Shui because the purpose of the book is to help you clear the clutter so that you can GET to the Feng Shui balancing part
Not only did I learn a great deal about the author through this book, but a great deal about myself. I even gave my first copy to a loved one and bought another for myself so I could highlight it and make notes.
Bottomline, this is MORE than just a self-help book.
Organizing Plain and Simple: A Ready Reference Guide With Hundreds Of Solutions to Your Everyday Clutter Challenges

Summary: Useful Tips for the Average Joe
Comments: This book is written for real people - those of us on the go who want to organize using the (usually limited) space and accessories readily available in our homes. Donna Smallin offers practical solutions for corraling clutter and organizing everything from decor, gadgets, clothes, linens, papers and toys on a room-by-room basis. No need to purchase expensive closet organizers or remodel your home for the sake of storage - this book offers tips on making room for everyday items in places that already exist. The author is a big proponent - as am I - of getting rid of useless junk, so packrats beware! The book is written clearly and concisely, with well-organized (of course!) paragraphs, sidebars and chapters that make it easy to find the information you're looking for quickly. A perfect book for anyone wishing they were more organized but don't know where to start.
Let Go of Clutter
ASIN: 0071351221

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Right On The Money!
Comments: As a professional organizer for over 20 years, I tend to be tough on the new organizing books that come out. It's easy to call yourself an expert and dispense advice, but for me what counts is the "understanding" behind the advice. And Harriet's approach, along with excellent pointers that are well-organized themselves, manages to combine a real compassion for the reader/client that is missing in so many "how-to-do-it" books that are on the market today. Harriet obviously understands the people she works with and teaches, and presents this understanding in a way that is not at all condescending. By combining her humor-filled observations with very practical step-by-step directions, she demonstrates that people learn best when they're treated with informed intelligence and respect. If your problem is clutter (and that includes most of us!), this is the book you should read.
Clutter's Last Stand: It's Time to De-Junk Your Life!
ASIN: 0898791375

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: I think this is one of the most helpful books out there!
Comments: I think this is a great book. I know some people are put off by Don's brashness, but with clutter being the problem it is today I think he is doing us a great service by showing us how we are just bogging down our lives by holding on to so much junk! I know numerous people who have read this book and they all have wonderful things to say about it. This book has helped change my life. It has helped me realize how much of my life was being used up by dealing with junk, physically and mentally. People are more important than things and the present is more important than the past. If you are looking for a way to organize and keep all the junk you have this book is not for you. But if you want to be set free from the bondage of junk this book will help.
Clutter Control: Putting Your Home on a Diet
ASIN: 0440503396

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Highly Motivating, Short, and To the Point!
Comments: This has to be one of the BEST and MOST MOTIVATING books I have ever read. This is a short, easy-to-read book. I read it in one day. This author REALLY UNDERSTANDS the problem of people like me who are "pack-rats," and WHY we are pack-rats. He tackles the problem from this point of view.
The very next day, after reading the book, I was able to organize my entire office. I am now involved in packing for a home move, and for the first time in years, I am making progress on knowing what to save, and what to get rid of. This book helped me TREMENDOUSLY in making these decisions. And it provides precise, practical suggestions for how to go about it step-by-step, so that you get rid of the problem of being entirely overwhelmed and not knowing where to start.
If clutter is disturbing your life, then THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU.

Summary: Most Useful Book I Ever Read!
Comments: I already was trying to declutter my life and this book was just what I needed. It answers the "why?" as well as the "how?" My clutter is not obvious to others, but 25 years of packratted stuff from a bygone marriage lurks in hidden places and I spend way too much time trying to find things... I also found dozens of small things I had fruitlessly searched for in the past. But the greatest benefit is the good feeling I get when I shove things into the trash or yard sale boxes and then stand there enjoying my nice tidy space. Nelson has provided self-talk which has me questioning why I am holding on to things that I neither need nor like. Magically, similar things start gravitating toward each other in a process of organization. I still have places to unclutter, but I now look forward to what I'm going to rediscover and a feel-good opportunity. Some day I may write my own sequel to this book.
Lighten Up!: Free Yourself from Clutter
ASIN: 0060952652

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Karmic Cleaning Made Easy
Comments: I love Michelle's attitude. She's very forgiving and compassionate at the same time she turns a clear eye on the reasons we acquire clutter (mostly unfinished business and fear).
Her filing section is fab. My papers have never been so orderly and, when I slip back into the 'piling up' phase, I reread her words of wisdom to get back on track.
She is realistic about different lifestyles (some of us are more cyclical with our cleaning up and she takes that into account) and very specific which helps when I'm feeling inadequate to the task. Her step by step approach makes it seem less overwhelming.
Don Aslett's Clutter-Free!: Finally and Forever
ASIN: 0937750123

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Hilarious and inspiring!
Comments: I have several books on simplifying life and organizing the home. I have found the organizing books patronizing and useless. Organization books helped me organize some of my stuff but not get rid of anything. I never really organized everything because to do so was too daunting of a task as I had too much stuff.
This is the first Don Aslett book I've read. Especially in the beginning, it is something like 95% reader's stories of their clutter and junk. It is laugh-out-loud funny. These stories are so extreme that I had to stop reading and immediately started going through my own things and getting rid of stuff. I'd go back and read more and then go back to de-cluttering. It took me 6 weeks to read the book because I have spent hours and hours de-junking my house in between. There are also some funny quizzes and poems, those that didn't interest me I simply skipped over.
The overall approach with this book is that it presents many readers's stories of what they save and collect and how they got rid of some of it. Then Aslett chimes in with his two cents and sometimes some tips on how to decide whether to save something or keep it or other words of wisdom regarding the subject at hand. Then back to this format over and over. I actually loved the format and felt that it was not preachy in nature. It was also easy to read in small bits and pieces, something nice for a busy mother like myself.
Aslett focuses on getting rid of most everything that we are not currently using or using within the last year. While I can't get that radical, it is inspirational. He deems a "collection" as anything we have three or more of, and he recommends having no collections. When I started thinking of it that way, I realized that I had some true garbage items that Aslett considers a collection, so I got rid of some of it! "Getting rid of" can mean giving things away to charities or friends, doing a tag sale, or throwing out the true trash. As I was de-junking I found some things he stated to be true: that some of the things I'd been saving had broken some time while in storage, some things attracted mice and were chewed, newspaper clippings were so yellowed that they were unreadable, and some books so mildew-y smelling that I got a headache when trying to read them. After experiencing that I realized Aslett was right when he said that even the stuff we save is usually useless (or lost) by the time we get around to trying to use it so we are better off to get rid of it sooner than later and not even to store it at all.
There are some very common-sense and useful tidbits such as the discussion of "is having a tag sale really worth the time, effort, etc." to which the answer is "no". I agree with him that selling used clothing to a consignment shop or at a tag sale is also less "profitable" than donating it to a charity and taking a tax deduction. The part about saving empty containers (boxes, tins, etc.) hit home and is true, how silly is it to save empty containers! The part about saving newspapers until we have time to read them is hilarious and I had to share that with some of my relatives who are guilty of this never-ending project of catching up on old newspapers.
I do feel a sense of more freedom now, as Aslett tells us we will feel if we de-junk. I also feel that my things do not bog me down. I have more de-junking to go but I am actually enjoying it! I also love living in the spaces that I've streamlined and de-junked, I can put my hands right on things when I need them, no searching through piles, etc.
I highly recommend this book. A relative and have two others waiting to borrow it next. Just talking to my friends and relatives about my own de-junking has inspired four people to start their own journey, and they haven't even read the book yet. Actually I am considering giving the Aslett books as gifts in the futur">
Addendum: I am now reading "Clutter's Last Stand" and "Lose 200 lbs..." and I find that both of those have harsher attitudes and sometimes actually are a bit demeaning and insulting toward people who have clutter. This book though, had none of that attitude and is by far much funnier and contains more reader mail which is fun to read.

Summary: Clearing clutter works
Comments: I read this book and a similar book back in March 2002. The end of the year is near and many positive changes have happened in my life. Even though I wasn't looking for a job change, I was contacted by a headhunter for a new job that included more money; took a 3 week vacation to Australia during my transition; bought a new car and just closed escrow on a new condo. I certainly didn't think I needed a total change in my life when I read the book. The concepts simply made perfect sense and I was open to what the universe would bring me.

Summary: This book really helped me clean up my life, and apartment!
Comments: I used to be a serious pack-rat and held onto everything I ever owned. One of the biggest fears we cluttered people have is getting rid of things we think maybe some day we'll need. This book really helped me get rid of things like newspapers (I could find online) and clothes (that I didn't wear) and stuff like that. It deals with the whole philosophy of de-cluttering your life, as well as the practical tips. One rule I totally live by now: Put like-things together. If you do that you'll find you don't need 7 balls of string, or two copies of "Thriller." Happy chucking
