Healing the Child Within: Discovery and Recovery for Adult Children of Dysfunctional Families
ASIN: 0932194400

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: A Turning Point in My Life
Comments: After a tumultuous adolescence and early adulthood I found myself in therapy. My therapist recommended that I attend a self-help group for adult children of dysfunctional families. The therapist also suggested that I read "Healing the Child Within". I didn't think I needed any self help group -at least not badly enough to go through the trouble of actually finding such a group in my area. After being in therapy for one year I read "Healing the Child Within".
I was not physically or sexually abused as a child. What I did not understand was how pervasive and harmful the emotional NEGLECT was and how it still affected me as an adult. What I learned from this book was how much I had been deprived of as a child. How feelings of fear and anxiety as an adult could be the result of childhood experience. After reading this book I was left with a very strong desire to attend a self help group. I attended my first ACoA group in October 1988 and my life has gotten better in ways I cannot put into words. This book for me was not the answer but a trigger to seek further help. But if I had not had this trigger I would not be where I am today. In the context of a trigger, I can honestly say that this book changed my life in a very profound way.
Homecoming: Reclaiming and Championing Your Inner Child

Summary: This audio version is a great way to begin to heal!
Comments: After listening to this audio series, I realized that I had suffered greatly as a child. This suffering was, in part, do to my parents' inability to be good models and their parents before them. This series helps you to learn how to end the cycle and progress as an individual. I needed the regression therapy (my term)and techniques on learning how to get in touch with those child-like emotions again. I highly recommend this to anyone who has feelings of inadequacy or unknown fear. John Bradshaw is amazing!
Healing Your Aloneness: Finding Love and Wholeness Through Your Inner Child
ASIN: 0062501496

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: One of those books that changed my life--still changing!
Comments: I bought this book 2 years ago. I wasn't able to absorb everything in this book at the time, because I was in a nervous breakdown. Now I've been in therapy and on medication for 2 years, and I'm stable. I picked it up and started reading just 2 weeks ago again, I'm reading it everyday, highlighting and highlighting all the good insights, and everytime when I open up the book just started reading something I've already read, I still get new insights about the healing process. I highly recommend this book!
Inner Bonding: Becoming a Loving Adult to Your Inner Child
ASIN: 0062507109

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Learning to Play with My Inner Child
Comments: I have to say from the outset that I used to think the whole "inner child" thing was a bunch of psychobabble nonsense. Then, I was confronted with some issues in my life that proved me wrong. As is my wont, I immediately began to research "inner child work" and to do some. This book was the most helpful of all that I read. The author talks about the importance of integrating the "child" inside all of us with the "adult" -- bringing the emotional side of our lives into contact with the rational side. I can honestly say that following this author's suggestions has had a huge, positive impact on my life.
The Inner Child Workbook: What to Do With Your Past When It Just Won't Go Away
ASIN: 087477635X

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: RELEASE THE ENERGIES THAT HOLD YOU IN LIMBO
Comments: There's a difference of talking of what your traumas (no matter how significant)are, and actually releasing the feelings and energies that accompany them. If you're really ready to get your life going and become a whole person, this book will do it. Once you've looked at the inner feelings and dealt with them, you're on your way to whatever you want of yourself. Talk about opening doors. You're worth it.
The Dark Side of The Inner Child: The Next Step
ASIN: 1883647002

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: Trances People live for non-therapists
Comments: Wolinsky states this book was written at the level of non-therapists. Much like "Trances People Live" Wolinksky describes hypnotic trances we create as children that unconsciously influence us throughout our lives. Wolinsky describes the trances of: age regression, futurizing, disconnecting, blocking out, illusioning, confusion, spiritualizing, amnesia, and trance dreaming. He gives strategies for uncovering and diffusing these trances.
How to Love Yourself When You Don't Know How: Healing All Your Inner Children

Summary: How To Love Yourself When You Don't Know How
Comments: I never thought I'd say this about a book, but this one changed my life - or rather, is continually changing it.
Hurts and unfulfilled needs left over from childhood can be anything from bothersome to crippling, and they can't usually be expected to be resolved by anyone except yourself (with or without the help of a therapist). This book gives very clear and thorough directions as to how to nourish those parts of you that have been deprived in one way or another.
No matter how small, hurt, angry or lost you're feeling at any time, those feelings are not the sum total of you. They do need to be taken care of, and the book explains how to do this by strengthening the responsible, loving part of yourself and drawing on it to supply yourself with what you need on an ongoing basis.
The Inner Family healing technique taught by this book continues to make my attitude to my life increasingly constructive and optimistic. The process is incredibly eye-opening, surprising, and as a bonus - often a lot of fun. More than anything, it is a huge joy and a relief to discover that one has the capacity to take care of emotional needs that have been neglected for many years. For any adult who feels that he/she still needs a little or a lot of parenting, I can't recommend it enough.
Taming Your Inner Brat: A Guide for Transforming Self-Defeating Behavior
ASIN: 1582700508

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Superb and insightful book
Comments: I've probably read several hundred self-help books in my life time, and even written some of them, and I have to say that I found this book to be one of the best I've read in a long time. The author's combination of research from well respected sources, metaphors and analogies that help bring the philosophical concepts to a concrete understandable place, and her use of personal vignettes is a great combination that makes for easy reading. I find that after reading this book I am much more cognizant of when my own inner brat has gotten out of control, and it has also enabled me to see other people's behavior through that lens as well. If this were required reading in our highschools and colleges, maybe we'd all be suffering less from bratty behavior. One of the most compelling chapters in the book discusses how we as a culture have evolved to encourage and tolerate this kind of excessive brattiness. I hope, with the help of teachers like this author, that we can start teaching our kids a different way to be in the world. Bravo Pauline for a job well done.
Recovery of Your Inner Child
ASIN: 0671701355

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Great resource for the discovery of your inner child!
Comments: This is one of the best books I've read on how to discover your inner child. It has many excercises to use to "talk" to your inner child. It showed me how to have a first hand experience with my inner child...and to actually feel the emotions. By writting and drawing with my non-dominant hand, I could actually have conversations with my inner child. I learned a lot about who my inner child was, the way she was feeling and how to make her feel happier and safer! The book stirs up many emotions that were buried for years, thus, helping me become healthier! One of the best self-help tools I have ever used!
Affirmations for the Inner Child

Summary: I found this book helpful, at one time in my life...
Comments: This book was once a great blessing to me. It really helped me deal with many things I was going through, and it often seemed that the author had some uncanny ability to know what I had experienced in my childhood and then how to help me come to terms with life in a "dysfunctional" family.
But upon re-reading this book recently, I find that I do not like it. Perhaps it is just that I have now "out-grown" this book. What I notice is that by helping us come to terms with having been a part of a "dysfunctional" family, this book only reinforces the idea that we come from dysfunctional families. At the point at which I found this book helpful - my late teens - I felt this book was a blessing and I was very certain that I had come from a dysfunctional family. I was therefore grateful to the author for providing such great help and compassion on my road to recovery from a dysfunctional family. But today, I'm not so sure I would call my family dysfunctional. I now concur with what Marianne Williamson wrote in A RETURN TO LOVE, "I come from a dysfunctional family. But who doesn't? The whole world is dysfunctional."
In other words, this book seems to be based on the myth that there is such a thing as a "functional" family. I don't think there is such a thing.
