Comments: This workout is fast-paced yet easy to follow. There are two tracks shown simultaneously so that beginners and more advanced exercisers can both see results and get a great workout. The exercises are basic (push-ups, curls, crunches, etc.), but the order in which they're done is logical and shown with proper form. The workout for the abs and the lower body are the best on here, and are highly effective. The workout is tough, and every muscle group is used. The upper arm workout is a bit much for a beginner to handle, if every set is followed, but can be done with lighter weights than are recommended. I used both 2-pound and 5-pound weights to follow the workout and saw results within two weeks of doing the workout twice per week. It also helps that the three workouts are in separate sections (upper body, lower body, and abs) so that you can use only one workout per day if desired. And, after each workout, there are stretches that can be followed as well.

Comments: Kathy Smith challenges you with a Pilates workout for the Lower Body. This targeted, isometric workout will build core strength and stability, while challenging you to think and breathe. Some of the exercises are similar to the Pilates for Abs workout. For example, Kathy starts out with the Pilates Hundred and for a final stretch, she uses the mermaid. Some of the exercises are modifications from the Pilates for Abs video, for example Kathy does the shoulder bridge, but adds a kick. There are even a few exercises that I have not seen in any Pilates workout on the market today. That originality really brings something extra to this workout. The DVD includes a 6-minute warm-up, and a 25-minute workout. This workout runs about 5 minutes longer than the Pilates for Abs workout. It is challenging, and will make substantial gains in your lower body in terms of strength and flexibility. An essential component of a well-rounded fitness regime.

Comments: I bought this and the Buns of Steel tape at the same time when I was 4 months and I rarely watch this one - I'm now 7 months and I think I've done the aerobic part of this tape twice. The moves are not as crisp or something - a little too pop music dance-y for me - made me want to put on my lace gloves with the fingers missing, lots of bangles and a big lace bow in my hair, like Madonna a la Lucky Star. There's a lot going on in the background and there are a lot of women doing the work out too, some a little annoying and distracting. I do like the specific toning areas of the tape - I often do the Buns of Steel workout and follow up with some of the workouts from the toning section of this tape. And the little bubbles that have Kathy giving info about the purpose of the moves or how to perform them correctly is helpful, but not enough to make me want to do this tape.

I,however,loved the intro where kathy explains Pilates. It is worth giving a try but don't get too excited. It is reserved for beginners because I, as an intermediate/advanced exerciser, am only going to use this one when i'm cranched for time.

Comments: Kathy Smith is, by far, one of my favorite instructors. This video is one of her best. She gives excellent cues, and her combinations do not fail to keep me interested for the duration of the workout. This video, in particular, is my favorite. When I am up for a great workout I pop "Power Step Workout" in my VCR. All three sections keep my heart rate up, and the combinations are challenging, but very easy to learn if you are a beginner. I especially like that there is the option for really increasing your workout's effectiveness with the high intensity moves. I have been stepping for years-in classes and at home-and think that this is one of the best tapes out there. I would highly recommend this to anyone, and everyone, who wants to get an excellent workout.

Comments: I bought this video about 4 years ago and I'm still using it today! It has stood the test of time in my library and I still find it fun and challenging. I use it when I want to have a little variation in my routine and it does the trick. Kathy's directions are very understandable, and she uses a split screen at times to focus on correct form for each kick and punch. There are several routines to do as well, and you can vary kicks and some of the routines to suit your ability. This is a great tape for folks of all levels!

Comments: This is my first Kathy Smith video, and I am impressed. The very first time I used this video, I found it very easy to learn. I didn't get lost once, which is unusual for the first runthrough of a workout. The moves she uses are basic and her instruction is good. Even though the steps were easy to learn, this was not an easy workout to do. It was definately sweat inducing and challenging! It is intense! However, she divided it into sections so people who can't do the whole thing yet can just fastforward to the next section. Her personality is not irritating either. She encourages us to go on, but doesn't patrinize or deliver fake, overly-enthusiastic, rehearsed compliments. She is just straightforward. The only bad things about the video are related to its age. The music and outfits were very early 90's! But this workout is so good that the age can be easily overlooked.

Comments: This is my first Kathy Smith DVD, and I totally love it. The two 20-minute workouts are very different, so it's never boring. The routine is quite easy to pick up and so there is no time wasted in fumbling around to follow the moves and you can concentrate on the actual workout. Only 2 things that I'm not crazy about but still rate it 5stars -- is the overly excited participants... they are constantly shouting in the background -"ooooh yeah!" .. "Come on guys!" ... "uh Huh!" ... while Kathy instructs -- this gets quite annoying... I also noticed there are off tempo moments here and there. All in all this is going to be my favorite workout DVD and definitely recommend to all the busy people out there to commit quick 20 minutes :)

Comments: I can not say how much I love Kathy Smith's workouts. Her cues are excellent, and she isn't obnoxious like a lot of the other instructors out there. This video, in particular, is excellent for those just beginning stepping, as Kathy explains each combination thoroughly. However, as someone who has been stepping for years, I quickly found myself becoming bored with the simple combinations. I would highly recommend this video to those who are new to stepping or unable to perform the high impact movements required in other aerobic videos. If I use this tape I usually add propulsion to the moves in the combinations to make things a little more interesting. But, you really can't go wrong with Kathy's workouts and this is a great addition to anyone's aerobic video collection.

Comments: I have quite a few Kathy Smith videos and decided to give the Timesaver Shaper Ball Workout a try. What fun! Kathy knows how to talk you through every exercise move so you don't feel confused. The day after I used the Shaper Ball Workout, my thighs were sore, but in a good way. I'm pretty much a beginner since I'm not consistent with exercise. With this video, I've easily added it into a daily routine. Yeah, even after a long day at work and two teenagers to raise! I recommend this video to anyone who's looking to start an exercise program or just want to add some variety to their existing routine. As Kathy points out in her video, you can make the exercises more difficult just by how you position yourself on the ball and by adding more repetitions.

I do wish Kathy would get some background music that doesn't sound like white noise, sometimes just a good music track can turn a decent routine into a great one. As always, you can count on Kathy to give you a solid workout that is easy to follow and understand.

Comments: I'm a Kathy Smith fan, and she's a talented instructor I've stayed with for 6 years, so I forgive her for making this video - it's terrible. There's absolutely zero to recommend it: Kathy's clothing is incongruent to the atmosphere; the tape is unenergetic, zero cardio; the camera doesn't show their feet, and worst of all they are in this ugly looking club and there are so many people dancing that Kathy has to modify her steps or be crushed in the crowd -- they are truly packed in there like sardines! The whole tape is an uncomfortable experience. Kathy is a fabulous cream-of-the crop instructor, so try her other DVDs, but don't spend your $$ on this.

You will feel like you've had a great workout when done without being overtaxed. I am 50 and have been doing aerobics for only 5 months. I have two other Kathy Smith videos and plan to buy more. I like the variety she offers in all her workouts and find that I like the challenge of getting to the next level. There is no chance I'll get bored working out with Kathy.

Comments: I have several of Kathy Smith's tapes, this is the only one I do not like. I have used it about 4 times now, and I improve with keeping up, but the tape doesn't get any better. I don't feel that I really work the muscles, it is more of an aroebic dance routine tape. I have knee and ankle problems and this tape could be damaging to both if I'm not careful. So, while I try to watch my moves, Kathy moves on to something else. I also think the editing could have been 1000 times better. Kathy's "Functionally Fit" and "Lift Weights to Lose Weight" are much better choices for the money. If you are into this for the weight loss and muscle toning go with one of those. If you just need to get your heart rate up and enjoy dance routines you might like this one. I didn't.

Comments: ...Kathy's Basics (54 mins) is something I still like to use every now and again - on a tired day, or when my energy level is low, or when I just feel like a kind of reinforcement of basics or even the look how much I've progressed buzz... I tried New Yoga the other day - great workout, Rod Stryker's input is strongly felt here. Not easy! I started practising yoga a few months ago - after a period a few years ago when I jumped straight into Ali McGraw's video for a few weeks. Now, I practise often, and my "wardrobe" of videos ranges from Yoga for Energy to Stephanie Foster's Intermediate Yoga to Yoga in Nature to Total Yoga to Baron Baptiste ie late beginner, early intermediate. This was not easy... I would say, round about the range of Total Yoga, a little shorter, 20 mins standing poses, 15 min floor, plus a 5 min relaxation. Also nice because each section has a relaxation and can stand alone. Very useful when you don't have much time. I haven't yet tried New Yoga Challenge, but have watched it. The instruction is fabulous - I actually ordered the whole bunch because I saw a short film sample on Collage and liked how R. S instructed the shoulder stand. The video runs around one hour, and is basically a power yoga class, which from my baron Baptiste experience I know I should handle OK. Starts off with sun salutations a and b, moves on to standing poses, balances and then floor poses. Only wierd thing was they did a table pose and referred to it as a bridge - and later did a bridge pose and referred to it as a bridge! But who cares, with this video and the encouragement and modifications offered, I finally feel a glimmer of hope - one day I shall achieve the rubicon - the wheel! Anyhow - for the price of one and a half videos - this set is well worth it - and useful! Kathy and Rod are very down to earth - this is an athletic style of yoga, no spirituality here - is that good or not? You have to decide. Personally, I love my Kripalu Dynamic mediatative yoga, my Baron Baptiste meditation in motion and so on - when I'm in the mood. At other times I love Kathy and Rod's straightforwardness!

Comments: -My upper body strength has improved tremendously with this tape, but the more I use it the more annoyed I become with the lack of continuity. You cannot just put in the tape, start exercising, and keep going until the end of the tape. Several times during the tape it is necessary to stop the tape and change position too quickly (e.g. pushups on floor to flies lying on bench), so you have a rewind. Also, once you learn the proper form, you have to stop and fast-forward through the instructional segments. -Another annoying thing is the emphasis on looks rather than on strength, fitness, and health. For example, the pectoral muscles have a lot more important purposes than making the chest look bigger, the shoulder muscles have other roles than to make your waist appear smaller, and the back muscles are not just for making you look taller. -I wish Kathy Smith would take this same workout, change the emphasis of the talk to health and strength, and streamline the editing so you could just follow along at a good pace without constantly stopping the tape, rewinding, or fast-forwarding. She could call it her "Functionally Fit Upper Body Strengthening" workout, which would complete her Functionally Fit series very nicely.

Comments: Okay, I'll admit it. The first time I did this tape, I didn't like it. I'd been doing Kathy's "Lift Weights to Lose Weights" for a couple of months and was ready for a change. I thought this video --twice as long as LWTLW-- would be the next step I was looking for. But after doing it, I was unsatisfied. Some of the exercises burned a bit, but I really didn't feel like I'd been challenged. This workout didn't seem much harder than LWTLW, perhaps even easier. I was dismayed. But I kept at it cause I bought the tape and I was gonna use it, darn it! And after doing it a few more times, something wonderful happened. The slow, deliberate reps that seemed so mild and monotonous initially, became much more effective once I really began concentrating on my form and working to truly ISOLATE each muscle, really "focus in" on what part of my body should be doing the work, as Kathy says during the tape. And sure enough, this workout cut new curves and sweeps into my legs, and ya gotta love that, eh?! I agree, however, with the other reviewers that the tape's editing could be better, cause I really don't need the informative little anatomy lessons and examples of each exercise disrupting the tape's flow the way it does. This would've been better placed at the beginning of the tape, I think. However, it's not such a problem, the segments are very short and I find it's nice to have a little break, shake the body out and get ready for the next exercise. Also, sometimes you're, say, doing standing leg lifts one minute and then a second later you're supposed to be on the floor for another exercise, which would be impossible w/out the magic of editing. But so what? I keep a remote handy and there's PLENTY of time to hit PAUSE on the remote so you can get where you need to be. And it gives you time to catch your breath or get a drink or put on an ankle weight or whatever. So here's what I think. If you're new to weights and trying to decide which Kathy Smith tape to start with: RIGHT HERE BABY! This'll give you plenty of instruction that is lacking in LWTLW, and also the slower, more deliberate pace is great for learning to isolate muscles and perfect your form. Then, you can graduate to LWTLW, and cut your workout time in half while still getting a GREAT workout. On the other hand, if you already did LWTLW, this tape might not be enough. But if you take the time to concentrate on what you're doing and add weights to the excercises when you're able, you can still get a great workout. Not a better workout, mind you, but a different one. Sometimes, though, that's all your body needs to break out of a plateau. Good luck! PS. I know it's a lower body workout, but man! Whoever shot and edited this video has a butt fetish! So many closeups of people's rears, it's kinda funny the first time you watch it. Enjoy! hehehe

Comments: I own several of Kathy's videos, and this one stands out as one of her best. It is an excellent all-around workout. It has a good warm-up, followed by a section targeting the upper body, then a section of low-impact aerobics, followed by sections targeting the stomach, legs, and buns. You will tone your muscles and improve your cardiovascular system very well with this video. The aerobics are low-impact, so beginners should not have much problem with this video, and the muscle-toning segments have subtitles at the bottom for beginners to follow if they find certain exercises too difficult. This video is good for beginners, but more advanced exercisers should also find it a good, all-around workout. Yes, this was filmed in the 80s, but a good workout doesn't become "outdated" just because of the date it was filmed. Don't let such criticism scare you away from this video.

Comments: This video was overall a good workout. The video is divided into three segments: Muscle Toning, Aerobics, and Stretching. The muscle toning segment consists of a lot of leg work, and also some abdominal and upper body work. More attention could have been paid to the upper body, but I found, overall, this section to be fairly effective in working out the muscles and toning up. It also has the different people performing the exercises in different ways as to allow people of all ability levels to get the benefit of the exercise (for example, one person uses a chair to help keep balance). The aerobics section is effective as far as getting the heart rate up and working up a sweat (take it easy if you aren't intermediate--it's somewhat high impact on the video, but I found you can easily convert it to low impact by taking out a lot of the 'bounce' in the moves), but it is a bit goofy and in a different style than what I am accustomed to with Kathy Smith. The gentleman with the long hair especially ads to the goofiness with his behavior. Anyway, the goofiness isn't so bad in that it keeps you from getting bored. The stretching segment is probably the most well-done part of the tape. It is very effective and relaxing. None of the stretches are particularly difficult. While the video is designed so that one can do any one segment alone, it is probably most effective to do all three segments consecutively if you have the time.

Comments: You can't go wrong with Kathy Smith. She is the best when it comes to correct form and has a great range of workouts, all of which are effective and safe. This is no exception. I have been working out for 3 years now and was recently given this one. After the first time, I decided to do it with ankle weights, to make it more of a challenge, but for beginners or intermediates it is a great choice for the lower body. None of the exercises are on the mat, all are done standing. Kathy uses a couple of more original moves as well which make it more interesting.

Comments: I am probably an intermediate yoga beginner with a dance background, and the other several yoga videos I tried were all too easy. This one provides a great, balanced yoga workout, with plenty of work on the back and the legs. The emphasis on the breathing, the length of the tape, and the pace of the instruction all help you get really focused mentally as you do it, too. I personally really liked Rod Stryker, who leads the video instead of Kathy Smith. The great thing about this tape is that you can keep using it and improving your form each time, instead of "plateauing" after 2-3 uses like I did with the easier videos I tried. I have been using this tape for several months now, and I always feel great after I finish this tape -- loosened up, strengthened, and relaxed. This is not a tape for people who are true yoga beginners, but is great if you're looking for something more challenging.

Comments: This tape is great to get you started on workouts. If you are not very physically fit, or, as I hate to admit, I do quite often, and let myself go for a month or 2, this one kick starts me, and eases me back to a regular aerobic routine. Smith's workout is easy to follow, and there are modifications to make it more challenging. She doesn't stop at a marching rhythm, but moves on to some latin moves and hip-hop. If you are a workout junky, and are already in tip-top shape, this will bore you, and after a week or two, I have to move on to more challenging videos. It is great for beginners, or when you just want an easier workout than your usual fare.

Comments: I bought this tape because I want to improve my flexibility without making a 1-hour long commitment every time I sit down to do it. Some of the poses are difficult for me, but I am just starting out and expected a bit of a challenge. Kathy takes her time with each pose and doesn't rush, so there is plenty of time to check that you are doing it correctly and don't hurt yourself. If you want to try Yoga, but find most of the tapes out there are more than you want to jump into right now, then this is a good tape to help you begin.

Comments: I have used this video for years. No matter how fit I am, this video is never to easy for me. It covers the entire body and is an excellent 1 hour viedo. The the warm up gets you ready for the workout and the lower body focuses completely on the problem areas, the outer hips, the buttocks and the abs and are a never too easy. I have never come across a Kathy Smith video that was not a challange. This is a video I will be able to use forever. I have worn out my first video and thus the reason for purchasing a new one. I cannot find it in the store and am very greatful there is one available from Amazon.com. I highly recommend this video for people of all ages.

Comments: This is a wonderful tone workout. The key here as well as with anyother workout video is consistency. There is no miracles. Stick to it and enjoy it. Eat with moderation and keep active. Then you will see results. I highly recommend it.

Comments: After coming back from college and gaining the freshmen fifteen I decided I needed to do something about it. I tried all sorts of tapes but than I found this one. I started working about every other day at first doing just the 20 minute work out, but than I really wanted to loose weight. I made it a habit to work out everyday whether I did the whole tape or just 20 minutes. I went from weighing 150 pounds to 113 and still loosing weight. This is the best tape around.

Comments: Wow, this workout packs a lot of into just 40 minutes! You start with a good warmup and stretch. Then you move into interval aerobics (intervals of high energy, high heartrate, followed by an active recovery and toning). The emphasis is on toning the lower body while providing a challenging aerobic workout. It ends with a great cooldown and stretch. The moves are not difficult -- just aerobically demanding. With Kathy are two people working at an advanced level and two people working at a beginning level. So it's easy to modify the routine to your fitness level. END

Comments: This is the third Kathy Smith video I've tried and, like the others, I easily jumped right into the workout from the first playing thanks to Kathy's very clear and precise instructions. This video has the same set and most of the cast from Kathy's "Step Workout" video. Like her other videos, this workout includes a warmup (8 minutes), a workout divided into three segments (total of 36 minutes), and a cool down (5 minutes). Unlike her other videos where you switch the placement of the step from a horizontal placement to a vertical one at the third segment, all segments in this workout use a vertical step placement. The first segment has the most aerobics. It is also the longest segment (16 minutes) but is not difficult. It's over before you know it. I found myself adding a lot of propulsion to the moves (airborne moves) to bring more exertion to the workout. The second segment (10 minutes) includes a lot of squats and leg raises. I have a troubled left knee, but I was able to do all the movements without aggravating it. There are a few moves she uses in this segment that I've never seen before (stepping with one foot on the step and the other on the floor, for instance). The final segment is all leg raises on the floor. There is not a lot of jumping around in this video as there is in the other two step videos I have (Kathy's "Step Workout" and "Power Step"). This video is a nice addition to my step aerobics rotation for days I don't feel like jumping around and would rather concentrate on intense thigh and bun work. The music is a little more "hip" in this workout (R&B with a little bit of rap even). It might also be helpful to note that this video has two different covers offered on amazon (they have the same title), so don't buy them thinking they are different workouts.
