The Molly Goldberg Jewish Cookbook ASIN: 0966983300
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Tacky humor, but the recipes are the Real Deal
Comments: The Jewish mother/family humor is dated and a little over the top, but it doesn't matter. The recipes are great. This is genuine, unmodernized Ashkenazi cooking, the way my grandma cooked. There's a great selection of recipes for every occasion--everyday, Shabbat, and holidays. No fancy ingredients, and the recipes are easy to follow. If you want to wallow in nostalgia, this is it.

The Jewish Heritage Cookbook ASIN: 0754809781
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Incredible
Comments: This book has changed the way I think about Jewish cooking. Instead of the heavy, starch-and-fat dishes I know, Spieler's recipes include a lot of vegetarian dishes and Mediterranean flavors. The recipes are easy to make, unlike many ethnic cookbooks. I made the tomato and Israeli couscous soup last night and it tasted as good as the picture looked. I got this book as a gift from my mom, and she done good on this one. You won't regret buying this.

Cucina Ebraica: Flavors of the Italian Jewish Kitchen ASIN: 0811819698
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Fantastic work at the crossroads of food and culture
Comments: Joyce Goldstein's cookbooks are a pleasure to read and to cook from. She has a wonderful sense of the way that culture and food interact and develop. In addition, she writes beautifully about Jews have effected and been effected by the cultures where they reside, adapting local cuisine to the Jewish palette and dietary rules. The Jewish community in Italy dates back to ancient Rome, at least 2,300 years. Their cuisine is rich, flavorful, and undeniably Italian. Goldstein brings their tradition to life in this great cookbook. Moreover, her introduction and notes that go with the receipts are fascinating. While everything I have tried was wonderful, some things should be pointed out in particular. The pizza (not what you think) is great. Also, Goldstein teaches that the ubiquitous putenesca sauce is, in fact, of Jewish origin. The risotto and stews are also wonderful. As with her other books, Goldstein does not skimp on the desserts! A testament to what a great book this is the fact I am getting hungry just writing about it!

That Hungarian's in My Kitchen: 125 Hungarian/American Recipes ASIN: 1877749281
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Aussie Grammar Critic
Comments: It appears that Adrien Duckworth should keep his/her day job, as a future in proofreading doesn't seem to be in the cards. For beginners, "Apostrophy" is misspelled. Further, to suggest that 's in English (that's with an uppercase "E" there, Adrien)grammar represents "his" and not "is" is quite humorous, if you think about it. Now, I realize that water is reported to swirl backwards going down the drain "Down Under," but I don't think the rules of grammar are similarly reversed in Australia. And that HIS the truth...lol!

1,000 Jewish Recipes ASIN: 0028623371
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Great recipes for the Jewish cook
Comments: This is a very large collection of Jewish recipes grouped by the holiday. I find this very helpful. Particularly helpful is the section on challah. She includes recipes and directions for three methods of bread making. There are personal tidbits about the recipes also. This is a must -have for any person who wants to make Jewish food. I am really thrilled to have it and the seller sent it quickly, right in time for the Jewish New Year! The book has no pictures.

Levana's Table: Kosher Cooking for Everyone ASIN: 1584792736
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Kosher gourmet cooking
Comments: We actually bought this book by chance, as it was the first kosher cookbook we had ever actually seen in a bookshop here in town. And what a pleasant surprise! The charming layout can perhaps best be compared to Joyce Esersky Goldstein's great books, e.g. Cucina Ebraica: Flavors of the Italian Jewish Kitchen, but while Mrs. Goldstein serves down-to-earth Mediterranean food in a wonderful way, Mrs. Kirschenbaum's recipes seem heavenly inspired. The recipes are a proof that kosher can be for gourmets as well. Additionally, so far I have not found any detail not corresponding to Kashrut, while other kosher cookbooks are sometimes a bit careless in this respect.

Sephardic Flavors: Jewish Cooking of the Mediterranean ASIN: 0811826627
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Must Own
Comments: Joyce Goldstein author and chef also understands the relationship between culture and food. Her book on Jewish Italian cooking should be read by anyone who likes to read cook books. In this book, Goldstein explores Sephardic food, the culinary heritage of Jews of the Middle East. She does not disappoint. The recipes are easy to follow and very tasty. The presentation is excellent and will make your mouth water. What is wonderful about all of Goldstein's work is you can see how Jews have, for centuries, absorbed the recipes of the culture in which they live, adapting them for their own tastes and dietary requirements. My wife and I have had a wonderful time cooking out of this book. The only problem is deciding what to make first. A great work.

Stuffed: Adventures of a Restaurant Family ASIN: 0375411062
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: A celebration of a family
Comments: It has been a while since I have read a book as warm and uplifting as this one. The flyleaf for "Stuffed" is misleading; you initially think you are reading a book which will focus on the tribulations of a restaurant family. However, while incorporating many recollections of the varied members of her family in the New York restaurant business, this transcends that guild. "Stuffed" celebrates a fascinating family, and radiates pride and love, while noting with humor the petty differences that kept family members apart. This is a visit to a distinctively New York Jewish family and reflects the special closeness, unwavering love, and the paramountcy of family in that culture. This is both a touching and an inspirational book. You will feel better for reading it, and be left with quite an admiration for its quite admirable author.

Adventures in Jewish Cooking ASIN: 0609610686
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: The Absolutely Best Jewish Cook Book
Comments: The restaurant Abigael's is wonderful and now to have a cook book by the Chef is great. I've had the opportunity to attend a cooking class given by Chef Nathan and tried the recipes from the class with complete success. The recipes in the book are easily done at home. I tried the roasted lemon-rosemary chicken and it came out exactly as pictured in the book ! My kids, ranging in age 6 - 11 devoured the chicken, normally I need to beg them to try something new. Not this time. The Creole Chicken is the best and so easy to make ! The recipes are klutz proof and easily reproduced in a non-gourmet kitchen. This is a worthwhile investment or terrific gift. You don't have to be kosher to love the food.

The recipes I have made thus far have all turned out terrific and inspire me to want to cook more out of this book. I'd eat in this author's kitchen any day!

Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: The Best Jewish cookbook ever
Comments: The loz and cream cheese pizza was a big hit at my party last week! And the passover desserts are excellent. This book is the best for Jewish holidays. All of the recipes I have made were excellent. I never made the drediel cake as mentioned in another review, but the meals, deserts and even the punch I made were easy to make and big hits at our family gatherings.

The Foods of Israel Today ASIN: 0679451072
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: A Coffee Table Cookbook!
Comments: When was the last time you took a cookbook to bed with you? This is a book that you'll read from cover to cover, and not necessarily in the kitchen. Well researched and expertly written, "The Foods of Israel Today" is actually a history of food traditions in Israel with a bonus of assorted recipes. Joan Nathan, formerly an assistant to Teddy Kollek, knows all the right people and has been to all the right places. The book is filled with delightful food-related anecdotes about well known Israeli personalities. This makes for a great read. For example, a full-page anecdote about a visit to Arik and Lili z"l Sharon's ranch with a photo of Lili and a description of their kitchen, precedes Lili's recipe for roast lamb. Her secret? A whole head of garlic pressed into the lamb. The introduction to this book is a fascinating history of the development of agriculture in Israel and how that influenced Israeli cuisine. The book has several full page color photographs, but more captivating are the many small black-and-white photos of Israel in its early years. There are other handy items such as recommendations for favorite Hummus haunts in Jerusalem, pita bakeries and where to get Baklava in the Galil. The recommended places are not all kosher, but the 300 recipes appear to all be kosher. This book is a must-have.

The number of apple recipes alone will keep me delightfully occupied. Once you leaf through it, you'll be scouring your kitchen for the needed ingredients to get started on one of the wonderful challahs or cakes or cookies. Opening this book is like opening the door to the Jewish bakeries of yore. What makes it even more appealing is the haimish (homey) way Marcy addresses each recipe. Her hints are a valuable asset. The World of Jewish Cooking ASIN: 0684835592
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: The recipes work.
Comments: This is one of those rare and wonderful cookbooks in which everything you make turns out the way you hoped it would. I've made many, if not most, of the recipes in this book, with no disasters, and without my usual fiddlings and substitutions--the recipes are great the way they are. Some of them are the basic Jewish fare--honey cake and potato kugel--and some of them are more exotic Sephardi recipes. They're all delicious. It's also a good read, but primarily I like it because I can pull it out for every Shabbos and find things to make that I know will come out.
