Teaching Study Skills and Strategies to Students with Learning Disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorders, or Special Needs (3rd Edition) ASIN: 0205335136
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: National Enquirer of LD Drop-outs
Comments: I usually avoid published 'workbooks' for their repetitive and generic content. This is a different product altogether and offers several well designed categories and assignments that target important areas. The concepts are useful for more than just student support. Despite the plethora of information currently flooding the airwaves and bookstores, I find that the people who are responsible for creating the curriculum and envisioning meaningful programs for students who need them are basically out in the cold. We must target them! This approach can be referenced by parents on the move, by other IEP team members (unless they too are lost and clueless), teacher training personnel or anyone who is in the mix for the long haul and needs a nice compact non-technical piece of evidence. I did not use the CD- but I'm certain that it would easily justify the cost to tightfisted budget hawks. But the great thing about it is that it can be used for teacher training seminars and/or individul supervision- again, if the responsible party is competent. Here's what it says- In order to have faith in abilities and thus, the capacity to achieve- there have to be many EXPERIENCES of the same. (make sure they happen!) Embittered learners become (by way of nature's survival instincts) emotionally defended and frequently engage in self-sabotage. They vent because they are in pain! The emotional ramifications of chronic failure, make the experience of the poor student like those of a CONDEMNED PRISONER. Reading these eloquently designed images of the sort of despair and suffering I know all to well- I felt like I was reading the National Enquirer for memory and drop-outs. But this is no scandal exaggeration- its an abominable scandal. Buy it- try it- and feel free to give me feedback- I'd welcome it and promise to put it to good use. Don't stop now!

Student Success Secrets (4th Ed) ASIN: 0812094883
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: A Teacher's Perspective
Comments: I first came across Student Success Secrets when I borrowed it from one of my students. He was using it to try to build his study skills and recommended it. That was about ten years ago, and I have since recommended it to many others. I came to Amazon today to send it as a gift to a student I know who is trying to get better. (and to get a new copy myself.) This book works because it addresses more than just the skills. It addresses motivation and our image of ourselves. As a rowing coach and a teacher, I know how important both those things are. It is important to have an image of yourself doing it right. The writing is also direct and clear, with good examples. It moves quickly. And the skills and suggestions it makes work. I found myself applying the same principles in other situations.

The Great Big Book of How to Study ASIN: 1564144232
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: What Teachers should use for their students
Comments: I found this book by pure chance and sent it to my Nephew who was failing misserably in the 11th grade. His biggest problem was anxiety to taking tests and getting organized. He has read this book twice and since then has passed every test this year with a breeze. He gave this book to a friend that has had the same problems, hopefully he too will turn it around. I am so happy I found something so simple with so much common sense to give to my Nephew, and at so little cost. This book in my opinion is priceless and a must have tool for success. Rick T Oregon

101 Ways to Get Straight A's (101 Ways) ASIN: 0816735654
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: Helpful in some ways but some unnecessary tips
Comments: I think this book was good and well-researched, but some things were unrealistic. I felt that some of the tips encouraged dumping your straight B and below friends just to befriend the straight As peole. Tips like listening to classical music were kinda lame. If you listen to classical music, you should do it because you want to, not because you want to get straight A's. It was a well-researched book, but.. at many points unrealistic.

Note-Taking Made Easy ASIN: 0809256533
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Tells how to organize notes and decide what to write down
Comments: Excellent advice on how to read a nonfiction book and what notes to make about it, how to take them down fast and why not to use a tape recorder. Written in chatty style, it's not much of a chore to read. I recommend it enthusiastically since it's jam-packed with helpful ideas.

Smart Notebook: A Guide to Effective Note Taking ASIN: 0787273023
Customer's Rating: 1 Summary: A good reason to buy books in a bookstore...
Comments: Do not buy this expensive notepad. Of the 200+ pages, only 50 have text on them. The rest are blank pages for note-taking, if you can believe that. The content of the first 50 pages could be printed in 6 pages if you left out all the full-page chapter headings and blank rear pages... When you take notes, you should: 1) classify information into, (a) main idea, (b) facts, or (c) support. 2) try to understand your course material. 3) organize your notes by subject, topic, date, lecturer. 4) make sure you read the course material BEFORE the lecture. 5) review your notes after the lecture. This content is so without merit that I feel like I got dumber from reading it...

Strategies for Learning and Remembering: Study Skills Across the Curriculum (Analysis and Action) ASIN: 0810630486
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Great Find!
Comments: I'm surprised that this book doesn't have dozens of reviews about it's value. This book is full of practical suggestions for helping children in all grades learn to do better in school. It has info about the teacher's role, developmental concerns, training strategies, etc. broken down for what works best at different grade levels. One of my favorite parts is about how to teach study skills effectively. Quite often it is not taught well. This is really a great find. I highly recommend it. I'd give it 10 stars if I could.
