Breaking the Rules of Aging ASIN: 0895261219
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: The last reviewer is nuts
Comments: I just loved this book. The negative review total misses the point of this book. It describes how to live longer and be independent and following an approach that is sensible and gets away from much of the modern dogma. I suspect that the last reviewer is an alternative medicine nut. I particularly liked the chapters on antiaging and alternative medicine as they provide the kind of approach that makes sense and is realistic. This book is for you if you are older and especially for you if you are younger.

Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth: Book 1 ASIN: 038549162X
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Impressions from a health practioner!
Comments: I purchased this book and began the exercises about four weeks ago. I am up to twelve repetition on each of the five rite"> I am overweight but otherwise in good health. I work out with weights and do aerobics and stretches at least three to four days a week and have done so for years. I was a bit skeptical about the claims made in this little boo"> but a few days after I started to do the rites I noted that my urine turned very dark and smelled bad. I noticed a burning sensation with each urination. I had not finished reading the entire book and did not relate these symptoms to the exercises. Then much to my surprise when I read the last section of the book it stated that these symptoms can occur as the body detoxifies. I was astonished. I feel a little light headed at times from the spinning so I'm going to slow the rate that I spin around down for a time. I do feel like I am already sleeping better and have increased energy levels as evidenced by the increase in my daily productivity both at home and the clinic. I am excited to see what will happen in two or three months from now. I do not know much about yoga or Indian healing arts, but I certainly feel I on to something. I will keep you updated. Tano E. Defy Aging: Develop the Mental and Emotional Vitality to Live Longer, Healthier, and Happier Than You Ever Imagined ASIN: 0970155506
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Thought provoking, quality of life enhancing
Comments: In Defy Aging, psychologist and life coach Michael Brickey has written a compendium of information and insights on how to live a longer, healthier, and happier life based on choices and attitudes. Brickey maintains that based on studies of centenarians, 70% of longevity is mental and lifestyle. He also cites dozens of exercises to help live a vital long life and explains why extreme diets or extreme exercise are not need and may prove counterproductive. Scientific breakthroughs in medicine and genetic engineering suggest that the human body can enjoy a life span of 150 years or longer giving the proper care and mental attitudes. Of special import is Brickey's commentary on how to deal with the challenges of keeping a lifelong sense of purpose, outliving friends and family, and dealing with the massive changes that will inevitable be experienced during the course of a long life in the modern world. Defy Aging is very highly recommended, thought provoking, quality of life enhancing reading for men and women of any age.

The Tao of Health, Sex and Longevity: A Modern Practical Guide to the Ancient Way ASIN: 067164811X
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Truly a beginner's, COMPLETE book of "the way".
Comments: I believe I was like everyone else in thought, that I could try to be healthier, but that I wouldn't feel THAT much better. But I did, and I did. So much so that I took Reid's suggestions (ancient Chinese wisdom) to extreme, my life so much better for it. It's amazing how much improvement can be made from diet alone. Acupuncture and herbs can tweek your condition, but the most substancial improvements are made with diet as described in this book. I found great improvements with every aspect tried
- including colonics. Areas of possible improvements are endless. With true effort following this book, I have cured my allergies, improved my vision, controlled Reynaud's phenomenon, and have been sick only twice in the past two years (both just a head cold. My most prized improvement has been clarity of mind, best described as level of awareness. I also recommend Reid's, "The Complete Book of Chinese Health and Healing", as an important compliment. Although this second one is repetishous of "The Tao ...", it has some sound info on food profiles (p.108) and some important material (not in "The Tao ...") on replenishing or building up your lactobacteria colony, especially following any colonic irrigations. If you have interest in taoist philosophy and practice, "The Tao ..." is a great place to start, covering most every aspect
"the way" can be applied and reaped in ones life. Happiness and Wholeness.

Boomers Really Can Put Old on Hold ASIN: 0966784219
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Boomers Really Can Put Old on Hold
Comments: ...As a pharmacist with a degree from Rutgers U. College of Pharmacy, Morris is able to give readers reliable, pertinent information about a wide range of medical and health topics and good habits of interest to persons getting into their fifties and older. In addition to this, she also discusses fundamental matters of the psychological and mental well-being of older persons. As the title denotes, the intended readers for her book are the baby-boom generation starting to face health and psychological matters of aging. But obviously her book is of interest to any readers older or younger interested in maintaining a vital life style for as long as possibl"> In general, Morris gives advice on how individuals can stay integrated into the mainstream of life even as they grow older. This allows them to enjoy a full, diverse life rather than become segregated from the younger generations by their own feelings of separation or by inappropriate images or expectations of society. A couple of the points this author makes are "Traditional retirement is a fast track to decline, decrepitude and an early demise"; and "Live in an environment that includes young people." Morris does not outline any specific program for enjoying life during one's later years as so many books in the self-help genre do. Instead, she offers readers upbeat counsel and principles which go a long way toward helping readers live the kind of life that is most rewarding and enriching for them despite long into their later years. ...

Ageless Body, Timeless Mind: The Quantum Alternative to Growing Old ASIN: 0517882124
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: A word of advice
Comments: I had to give this book 3 stars coz it lies midway between what the readers want and what this book is trying to convey. If you are reading any of chopra's books keep a couple of things in mind. 1. "His" Ideas have been around hundreds (thousands?) of years in the books that have been catching dust, in India. What he does is basically add a few new catch words such as "quantum", "Einstein", "spacetime" to present the ideas. I am not sure thats a pretty thing to do coz according to Feynman - Nobody understands Quantum mechanics. The ideas are good, infact very good but naturally we as readers are interested in the immediate practical aspects of it. And thats the problem. Everyone of us creates our own reality. Thats not to say, we create the trees and cars around us, rather we add our own dimension to the whole process of interpreting something, which in turn affects us significantly. And hence no single "way" will apply as a magic key for all of us. And hence you will see why some people rate some books with 5 stars and others with 1 star. Therefore you will not find "7 steps" or "5 steps" or "[my lucky number] steps" to achieve what he says you can. 2. Chopra is basically acting as a attorney trying to make his point that in meditation lies the key to understanding ourselves. Thats all. Nothing more or nothing less. I like his books becoz they present the information which was previously appeared like mumbo-jumbo and difficult to understand into something concrete and easy to understand. They just provide the basics. Meditaion takes a long time.. probably years of continuous effort for the fruits to show. So if you are planning to read the book with an intention of immediate gratification or getting younger quick, you are better off spending the money on a few shots of Vodka and looking at yourself in the mirror.

Stopping the Clock: Longevity for the New Millenium ASIN: 1591200156
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: EXCELLENT LONGEVITY HANDBOOK
Comments: The science of longevity and anti-ageing medicine are making such rapid strides that this book, published in 1996, might not be on the cutting edge as far as the latest nutrient research is concerned. However it still deserves 5 stars for its in-depth treatment of all the major issues and nutrient discoveries up to 1996 and for its readable style. Klatz and Goldman deal with theories of aging, the natural hormones
(melatonin, DHEA, hGH etc.), the miracle minerals and vital anti-oxidants, exercise, nutrition and how to handle stress. It's important to note that an anti-aging lifestyle is not only designed to extend one's life, but also to ensure a healthy, happy and quality existence at any age. The chapter on the pioneers of anti-aging medicine and their personal secrets of longevity are particularly interesting and informative. The exercise section is very well illustrated and there are a couple of other graphs and figures to illumine the text. The book contains a glossary, appendices on anti-aging specialists, institutes, research and educational organizations, an extensive bibliography and a thorough index. I would also like to recommend "The Superhormone Promise" by William Regelson and "Renewal" by Timothy J. Smith. These three books together will make you an anti-aging expert. Just remember to apply this good advice!

The Root of Chinese Qigong: Secrets for Health, Longevity and Enlightenment ASIN: 1886969507
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: Good Theory, Little Application
Comments: Dr. Yang's book, "The Root of Chinese Qigong" is a good resource for the theory of qigong. He goes into great detail explaining history and theory. Although he offers a few directions for applying the information, application is not the main thrust of this book. So don't expect many pictures and directions for qigong exercises. This book would be a good complement to other qigong books more concerned with the actual exercises, or if you already study qigong with a teacher the book is good supplementary reading. I wouldn't recommend this book if you've never had any exposure to qigong before, because a lot of the information would not be meaningful to someone who had never practiced. One should note, that Dr. Yang's degree is a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering and not a degree in traditional chinese medicine. Until I read his bio, I had assumed he was a doctor of chinese medicine. Regardless, Dr. Yang has done a lot of research into the field of qigong. He is more than qualified to write this book. He is also one of the world's leaders in teaching and promoting chinese martial arts.

From Here to Longevity: Your complete Guide for a Long and Healthy Life ASIN: 0971434204
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Want to live a long, healthy life? Read this book!
Comments: I loved this book; I picked it up at the [store] because of the cool cover (shallow, I know, but read on), but within two minutes was so hooked that I couldn't put it down. We live in a society that is both obsessed with being thin, while at the same time grows increasingly unhealthy. Dr. Ray's premise is that we've come to expect degeneration, dependency and disease as a natural part of aging, when in fact all of these things can be retarded, or even eliminated. As a Stanford Med school educated Biochemist, Dr. Ray knows her stuff, and she shares this all important information in a way that is both fun to read and highly compelling. Want to live to experience true longevity, while being vibrant, fit and mentally alert? Start eating and exercising the way we're genetically programmed to do, and stop falling prey to fad diets and more drugs. Dr. Ray offers a bold new look at how to seize control of your health and your future. Warning: this book is recommended for people who are not afraid to look at their lives and their health in a whole new way, and who are willing to explode the myths of pharmaceuticals as cure-alls, and dieting as we know it as the way to health.

Grow Younger, Live Longer: 10 Steps to Reverse Aging ASIN: 0609600796
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: No nonsense advice
Comments: Chopra and Simon offer 10 basic steps to living longer and feeling younger. The steps in of themselves are not complicated (drink water, sleep 8 hours, meditate, etc.), but putting them into practice is difficult for most of us. I, for one, have a terrible sleep schedule, I drink coffee like a fiend, and I hardly look for activities that get me out of my daily hum-drum routine. But the fact of the matter is that I do these things unconsciously, and this book has motivated me to live a more conscious life and be more aware of how every choice I make affects my health for the better or worse. You don't have to follow the book's plan to the letter, but learning more about healthy habits and adopting what works in your life can only help.

Brain Longevity: The Breakthrough Medical Program that Improves Your Mind and Memory ASIN: 0446673730
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Stimulating, Provocative Discussion of the Mind and Memory
Comments: I really enjoyed this book. Dr. Khalsa has a passion for his work that carries over into his writing. In straightforward fashion he moves from a very good discussion of how the brain works to a well organized plan for how anyone can employ nutritional, stress reduction, and exercise techniques as well as pharmacological therapies to prevent brain degeneration, optimize performance, and even reverse the course of such conditions as age related memory loss and Alzheimer's disease. I began reading this book to educate myself. I came away a "convert" to Dr. Khalsa's program. He convinced me to make some lifestyle changes that no doubt will enhance my overall well being and quality of life. I can think of no higher praise for a book than this

The Ayurveda Encyclopedia: Natural Secrets to Healing, Prevention, and Longevity ASIN: 0965804224
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: Uomotenero
Comments: Yes, it's a 'monumental' work, but only from the perspective of someone that values the meaning of an Ayurvedic Science in terms of the accumulated information... Unfortunately, it can not be helpful to people, who are not too familiar with Vedic philosophy and practice, in the contemporary Western world. I've also asked many Ayurvedic practitioners, about their intelectual experience of this book. Similarly, many of us were disapointed, regardless of the country, ie. USA, Europe or even India. There are many great books on this timless subject, just to mention few authors like: David Frawley, Vasant Lad, Robert Svoboda, Maya Tiwari and Atreya.

Gary Null's Ultimate Anti-Aging Program ASIN: 0767904362
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: A roadmap for life
Comments: I have read this book and started Dr Null's program. Already I have noticed substancial results. I haven't gotten my usual colds, I've lost weight and rashes have dissappeared from my skin. I require less sleep at night and feel much more energetic. It was surprisingly easy for me to give up my coffee, meat and doughnuts. I have substituted a much more varied and tastier diet of vegetables, fruit, grains and fish. I highly recommend this book and program for those who are concerned about their health and youth.

The Age-Free Zone ASIN: 0060988320
Customer's Rating: 2 Summary: Why so many titles?
Comments: This is the paperback edition of the book that appeared earlier in hardcover as "The Anti-aging Zone" (in my opinion, a better title). I suggest that it is better to read "Enter the Zone" instead of or before reading this one. I have reservations about recommending this book because there are some obvious mis-statements that should have been caught by an editor, a great deal of boring repetition, and some very stretched analogies (e.g. pages 32 and 50). The persistent reader might reach a point where they are rewarded by more details of biochemical mechanisms than are given in the earlier books. The tables of food amounts are different from those in the other books and appear to be intermediate between the earlier version of "Enter the Zone" and the later amounts of "The top 100 zone foods".

Beyond Pritikin: A Total Nutrition Program for Rapid Weight Loss, Longevity, and Good Health ASIN: 0553574000
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Life changing!
Comments: I picked up this book at the library when "Sugar Busters!" was not available. I enjoyed the technical discussions, and the idea of complex carbohydrates promoting hypoglycemia struck a chord in me--my doctors had me on a pretty high carb diet that really didn't help my symptoms. Since starting the 2-week Fat Flush in this book, I have lost 6 pounds in 4 days. This WORKS for me and I even cheated a little. Hunger isn't a big problem on this diet. The essential fatty acids--and avoiding the wrong fats--are a big key too. I recommend this highly! I will also buy a copy to keep for reference.

Prime: The Complete Guide to Being Fit, Looking Good, Feeling Great ASIN: 0399527192
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: How to be a 40+ Fit Man
Comments: It is a fitness book to meet the needs of men in their mid-30s and beyond. The exercises in the book are good except that most requires you to be at a gym as it requires equipment - unlike Jorge Cruise's "Eight Minutes in the Morning". The nutrition and the suggestions on how to look young are also instructive.

The Detox Book: How to Detoxify Your Body to Improve Your Health, Stop Disease, and Reverse Aging, 2nd Edition ASIN: 0941599329
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Fantastic book with one tiny exception...
Comments: The book is the best health book I've ever read. The tiny exception is, I showed it to my friend who's got a ph.D. in biochemistry. He read it and said "the book is right on, with the exception of "single organ" cleans (liver detox, etc.). His feeling is that you don't target organs with a detox, the entire system is affected (much the same way you can't "spot" remove fat!)
Highly recommended, regardless!

The Tao of Health, Longevity, and Immortality: The Teachings of Immortals Chung and Lu ASIN: 1570627258
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Excellent...
Comments: Eva Wong has done an admirable job translating several classic Taoist texts for Western consumption; in this book she continues to uphold the excellent work. These texts were allegorical references for internal alchemy (Qigong) and I have yet to find better translations. Wong starts the book with a general overview of some of the historical discrepancies around the text, particularly when and by whom it was written. Her explanation, although somewhat short, is quite informative and sets the stage for the translation. She also provides information to assist the reader in understanding the somewhat 'cryptic' discussion of such terms as "yellow sprouts" and "true vapour". The translation is actually very informative but the reader must leave behind the Western preoccupation with trying to put everything into direct terms. The Taoist's spoke of internal alchemy in a very poetic manner - something which I feel is probably the best method possible. That is, a lot is up to the intuition of the reader (with the help of a proper master) which is the best way to understand the subject. For those who have been cultivating this book will be an invaluable asset. Highly recommended.

Comments: This is often the first book I loan to friends who are interested in learning about Ayurveda(I own two copies!). Reverse the Aging Process Naturally: How to Build the Immune System With Antioxidants--The Super-Nutrients of the Nineties (The Gary Null Health Lib) ASIN: 0679745092
Customer's Rating: 2 Summary: Title caught my attention
Comments: The title caught my attention first. I own five or six of Gary Null's books. When I find another of his books that looks good I by it. It reads like a text book, it is very dry. The information is not new. It is a short book, good as a reference unless you are a nutrition nut. Sadly in this book, Gary is rehashing the beans. I'm disappointed when authors do this. A master nutritionist, he could do better.

Ancient Lovemaking Secrets -The Journey Toward Immortality ASIN: 0865681694
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: response to 2 stars from California
Comments: Like most material that comes to us in life, ones personal Self is important, in my belief, to maintain, and not turn to someone elses experience in words or written material for complete and utter guidance. If one reads this book looking for complete assurance of infrormation and guidance in their sexual life, then you may be dissapointed. If you are looking for material that uses complex and redundant information, that will give the illusion the author possesses the expertise, this may not be the book for you. I personally feel that here is a man who has been taught deeply through his own personal experience with his teachers, has been schooled in this subject in a way that most of us today do not learn,as an apprentice in life, as a process that he actually went through himself , not by sitting in a classroom and being 'educated' from data in a book being spoken by a professor. To me, this personal learning experience of life from teacher to student is priceless. This book was written from such an exchange and is true. The writing may be basic, but what is essential to you? Is it the words you read or the what comes through, 'between the lines'? What is Sifu McNeil really trying to communicate? He is reminding us that sexual relationships are about two people equally, the giving and recieveing needs to be balanced between lovers, it is not about only pleasing the man or only pleasing the woman, but the beauty that will flow between both if there is respect, communication and listening. I appreciate the simple and honest way this book is written, it is straight forward and may be brash for some people, for he is not hiding behind big words. Perhaps if you feel that you have paid too much for not enough 'pages' of 'information' you might try these exercices daily for several months, and then see if you got your moneys worth.

Dr. Atkins' Age-Defying Diet Revolution ASIN: 0312251890
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Dr. Atkins' - next steps
Comments: Last fall I successfully lost 20 lbs on the Atkins diet - and changed my eating and nutrition habits entirely. Six months into low carb life I have lots of energy and feel good in general. As an added bonus, my husband tried the diet with me to help me with the menus - he dropped 43 lbs and lowered his cholesterol and blood pressure. My goodness. This book came just at the right time when the long term nutrition questions about how to go forward and feel healthy needed answering. Just finished reading this book, and much of the advice has appeal. I find it extremely useful as a guideline for the nutritional supplements that should be part of the daily regimen. I suppose I'll have to make an effort to include kale and spinach in our eating more regularly. We have recommended the diet book to many friends - and everyone who followed the rules lost weight and felt good. Am now sending this book to those good friends and family.

Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth Cookbook: Simple, Delicious Recipes for Health and Longevity (Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth) ASIN: 0936197323
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Unique recipes; questionable advice
Comments: This book is obviously a labor of love by Otfried Weise and Frederiksen, two ostensibly talented, enthusiastic and imaginative cooks. The recipes are unique, tantalizing and a whole new dimension in themselves in tastes and textures. These meals and culinary gems are a great supplementary adventure for those seeking new and different kinds of vegetarian fare. However, the "advice" about food and eating contained within is hard to stomach (pardon the pun): it takes the extreme view that our gastric systems are super-delicate and that if not treated with Extra Care, we'll be doomed to Indigestive Hell and corrupted stomachs. Meat, according to these well-meaning two, contains "poisons." While it is true that mass production of animals for sale as food is shockingly poor, the authors never think - rather offer - to mention that organic meats are plentifully available, and that it is possible to eat animals that are raised naturally and humanely. Furthermore, it is grossly irresponsible to state, "The human digestive system is not designed to cope with large amounts of animal products." According to whom? Evidence remains that we evolved as carnivores. And vegetable eaters. Throughout, the authors cite constantly the dangers of "fermentation" in the stomach and all the ills of food being wrongfully combined - it almost makes one scared to eat. This agitated and anal-retentive approach to food and eating is liable to promote neuroses about an immensely enjoyable aspect of life: in the words of Julia Child in her "The Way To Cook" book: "Because of media hype and woefully inadequate information, too many people nowadays are deathly afraid of their food, and what does fear of food do to the digestive system? I am sure that an unhappy or suspicious stomach, constricted and uneasy with worry, cannot digest properly. And if digestion is poor, the whole body politic suffers." Enjoy this innovative, versatile cookbook - in moderation, like everything else.

The Dream of Eternal Life ASIN: 0231116721
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Life, death and everything in between...
Comments: Mark Benecke has immortalised himself in this most witty of forays into the popular biology of life and death. All the concepts in this book are well-clarified, and easily accessible to scientists and non-scientists alike. Dazzling in its detail while remaining true to the 'big picture' all the while, the narrative is almost like a cameraman zooming in and out to capture a panoramic landscape, looking at each issue from many angles. This is one of the many strengths of the book, making it well-rounded and non-biased on every level. The progression through basic cell and molecular biology to the concepts of life, death and immortality leads the reader in a satisfyingly logical order. From Dracula to Darwin, Gaia to genome, climate change to cryopreservation, this book is comprehensive enough to have it all. If you are human, and have an interest in life or death - read this book now!

The Healing Cuisine of China: 300 Recipes for Vibrant Health and Longevity ASIN: 089281778X
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: Interesting buy not organized very well.
Comments: This makes an interesting reference book on medicinal recipes. I just don't like the way it is organized. You have to thumb through the whole book to get a feel for what ailments it addresses and I found the list somewhat wanting. Other than that, it makes an interesting compendium of Chinese remedies although I think I'll pass on the fried and ground earthworms!
