The Language of Letting Go ASIN: 0894866370
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: A lifeline
Comments: I'll admit it -- I read this book through a crisis and a time of life that saw transitions everywhere. And while I'm still reeling from pain, and disbelief of the events that have happened to me in the past few years, I am already so much better from reading this book. When I find myself tempted by defeating behaviors, reading one passage reminds me why I don't want to continue down that road any longer. The funny thing is, I never saw myself as a codependent or as an addictive person. It doesn't matter what type of turmoil you're going through -- this book WILL remind you of a better way of life. It truly is a lifeline. I keep a copy at work and am discovering I'll need one at home to. If you struggle with any type of negativity, this book can help remind you that it's really going to be okay.

Insight Meditation: An In-Depth Correspondence Course ASIN: 1564554341
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Best Money Ever Spent
Comments: I've never, ever gotten more out of a purchase in my life. This is a wonderful treat: 12 casettes with wonderful easy to follow talks on meditation, 12 guided mediation tapes, an easy to read guide, and a meditation teacher who writes to you after every lesson. I've gotten a tremendous amount of peace of mind and even insight out of this experience, and I recommend it highly to all of my friends -- well, except the very most skeptical types (though no doubt they need it most!).

Turning the Mind into an Ally ASIN: 1573222062
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: The Best Handbook for Learning to Meditate
Comments: Sakyong Mipham's book is a simple guide to a complex subject. His Tibetan roots and life spent in the west give his anecdotes and examples a deep but accessible flavor. After studying Buddhism for many years I found it refreshing- brought me right back to the basics - why to meditate and how to do it. I also appreciate the lack of religious terms and dogma... This book will be a great introduction for new meditators - without making them feel like they have to become Buddhist to get the benefits of practice.

Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind ASIN: 0834800799
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: The Best and Most Practical Book on Zen
Comments: Zen Master Suzuki gives the most lucid exposition on practicing zen ever put on paper. The teachings are not watered down, sugar coated, or given false pretenses as the absolute truth. The chapter on meditation exemplifies all these qualities. To Suzuki, just the act of sitting zazen is meditation itself and as a consequence, enlightenment. No mention of mystical visions, long processes of clearing the mind and becoming "one with the universe" - his only instruction is to perceive simple reality. As a long time meditator, I have found Zen Master Suzuki's approach much more honest and fruitful than any of the methods that use various mediums(i.e. imagery, sounds) to facilitate meditation. The rest of the book constantly reaffirms this simple yet profound concept. Anyone interested in Zen Buddhism, out of spiritual or intellectual curiosity, should start here.

Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life ASIN: 0786880708
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Sitting in the crossroads of here and now.
Comments: I have revisited this meditation guide many times since first reading it nearly five years ago. Kabat-Zinn is not a yogi, sage or Zen master. Rather, he is a meditation teacher and the director of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. He also teaches Massachusetts prison inmates how to meditate. He approaches meditation in a non-spiritual way. "Meditation can be a profound path for developing oneself, for refining one's perceptions, one's views, one's consciousness," he writes. "But, to my mind, the vocabulary of spirituality creates more practical problems than it solves" (p. 264). In this easy-to-read book, Kabat-Zinn shows us how to cultivate mindfulness in our lives. The "practice, practice, practice" of meditation enables us to find our "soul path, a path with heart" (p. xvi), and to "chart a course toward greater sanity and wisdom in our lives" (p. xx). Through meditation, Walden Pond can be found in our breath (p. 24). Meditation, Kabat-Zinn tells us, "is a Way of being, a Way of living, a Way of listening, a Way of walking along the path of life and being in harmony with things as they are" (p. 88). "Dwelling inwardly for extended periods, we come to know something of the poverty of always looking outside ourselves for happiness, understanding, and wisdom" (p. 96). Besides learning how to surf the waves of life through mindfulness training, in this book you will also find words to live by on non-doing, patience, letting go, non-judging, voluntary simplicity, the delusion of positive thinking, ahimsa (non-harming), anger and parenting. Whether you are new to the meditation cushion or a longtime practitioner, if you are looking for a simple, how-to book on meditation, "this is it."

Meditations for Manifesting : Morning and Evening Meditations to Literally Create Your Heart's Desire ASIN: 156170315X
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: This cd/tape is a must whether you meditate or not!
Comments: I bought this tape and started the morning meditation with Wayne several months ago. The background music is beautiful and Wayne's voice is powerful and sure as he leads you through a morning AH meditation. As you perform your "ahs" with him, he coaches you with gentle reminders to breathe deeply and direct your desires through your third eye. Following about 10 minutes of basic Ahs, Wayne inserts affimations to help you start your day on the right note. The reverse side of the tape is an evening meditation to level you to peace complete with more affirmations. I have experienced my desires manifesting before my eyes after starting my day with Wayne Dyer and the sound of "Ah".

Meditation For DummiesŪ ASIN: 0764551167
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Eloquent , insightful and good-humored
Comments: This eloquent, insightful book thoroughly explores the simple yet subtle art of meditation. While user-friendly like all of the titles in the For Dummies series, it's also written with a wisdom born of the author's many years of direct experience as a meditator and teacher. Meditation For Dummies covers a range of subjects with humor and grace, from basic instructions to the discovery of our most profound spiritual depths. In Part 1 Bodian clariifes what meditation is (and isn't) and offers a number of compelling reasons to adopt this "advanced technology for the mind and heart." He also traces the historical roots of meditation and describes the important foundations of motivation, attitude, and beginner's mind, which ensure a fruitful practice. "Ultimately, the great meditation teachers advise that the best attitude to take toward meditation is an open mind, completely free from all preconceptions and expectations," Bodian explains. "One of my first meditation teachers, Zen master Shunryu Suzuki, calls this beginner's mind -- and he counsels that the goal of meditation is not to accumulate knowledge, learn something new, or achieve some special state of mind, but simply to maintain this fresh, uncluttered perspective."
In Part 2, the author covers the basics of meditation practice, including pointers on posture and preparing for meditation, as well as a chapter on opening the heart and cultivating compassion. In Part 3, entitled "Trouble-shooting and Fine-tuning," he offer sage advice on developing the right relationship with troubling thoughts, feelings and sensations. The highlight of this section is a chapter on cultivating spirituality that explores the nature of self (or no-self), traditional paths of awakening, and the sensitive subject of finding a teacher (inner and outer), which the author recommends if one wishes to go more deeply into the practice. The book concludes with chapters on how to nurture self-awareness while engaged in daily life and on how to use meditation for healing and performance enhancement, followed by answers to ten commonly asked questions about meditation. Despite its one-size-fits-all title, Meditation For Dummies is the best book on meditation I've read -- at once subtle and comprehensive, spiritually sensitive yet pragmatic. Be prepared for an easy-to-read, good-humored, and discerning guide on the journey of discovering your true nature through the ancient but timely art of meditation.

Meditation As Medicine: Activate the Power of Your Natural Healing Force ASIN: 0743400658
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Easy Read, Plain English, exc. illus.
Comments: Although the authors provide in-depth coverage on the chakras, chi, body-mind-spirit connection, it is so well written and formatted that reading and comprehending the content is more easiy accomplished than in many books of this nature. The type is clear, distinct, well spaced. The illustrations of 'poses' to be used for the meditational healing practices are clear and of good size. You can do as little or as much as desired and are led to understand it is all healing for your particular area of focus. You don't have to be a guru to use this guide to meditational practice for healing. I plan to purchase the video or audio abridged version to simplify the practice for myself as the book is frequently needing to be referenced during the pose and breathing work you'll be doing. An excellent addition to the alternative healing library.

Meditations for Women Who Do Too Much ASIN: 0062548662
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: You need this book.
Comments: We women are raised to take care of the world instead of ourselves. Kids, spouses, jobs, parents, organizations, volunteerism all take precedence in our lives over looking out for number one. What women don't realize that if we don't cut back some and take care of ourselves, we will crash, and who will be there to take care of all that we take care of now?
I bought this book after I coordinated a mini-convention, discovered my mother has cancer, my older cat had breast cancer surgery, and I was attending a class on how to deal with my husband's diabetes. With the holidays coming up, my stress levels were raising more than my cholesterol. Something had to give. Every night this little gem of a book tells me that it's okay to let go, which was the same advice my best friend gave me the night I purchased it. I am not Wonder Woman, so why am I trying? Why do I feel the need to fix everyone and everything in my life except myself? This book will helps me uncover the behaviors affecting my life and then helps me change them. You need this book. I'm buying three more copies for other women who need them.

Mindfulness in Plain English ASIN: 0861710649
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: How to practice insight meditation and why
Comments: This is an excellent book. It is in plain English. It provides step by step, detailed instruction in how to practice insight meditation and mindfulness. This is the type of meditation that the Buddha describes in his writings. But, in addition to providing the detailed nuts and bolts the author also explains why you should meditate and what you can get out of it. The specificity of the instruction is what sets this book apart. Yes, his is not the only way to do it. But, if you are starting out new this is exactly the type of book that will provide a road map for you. As you read more, attend classes, or a sitting group you can modify your practice. But even with such this book provides much helpful and specific advice of how to do it and what to do when problems arise. Which they will. In addition, the author's explanations of the whys of meditation have a surprising depth on re-read. Surprising because of their straight forward presentation. I've found revisiting the book most helpful.

Healing After Loss: Daily Meditations For Working Through Grief ASIN: 0380773384
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: comforting, short daily quotes, passages, and summary
Comments: I didn't expect a grieving book to be so comforting...just like I didn't expect my Dad to die suddenly of a heart attack at 58. My Mom and I found this book and bought it for everyone in our family. It is amazing how the topics are similar to what you are recently feeling. I read out loud to my Dad in the morning to give me energy and to keep him close. (Ladies - do this *before* you put on makeup.) Our family will talk about a daily quote and how we relate to them. It helps sharing our stories and feelings through this pit in your heart time. Unfortunately, due to their sudden loss, I have given this to family friends. But they have told me it has helped. My Mom gave it to her pastor and to the rescue chaplan so they can pass it onto others in need. This book can help you through this unthinkable time.

Comments: If you are not familiar with "mindfulness meditation", this is the perfect starting point. The basics are covered in this set of 2 tapes, narrated by the author. The Zen of Seeing: Seeing Drawing As Meditation ASIN: 0394719689
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Don't ever let it go.
Comments: Where has this book been? I started drawing and painting a few years back and have bought lots of books, but none like this! I don't think of myself as a Zen person or a mystic, but this book really speaks to me. The drawings are beautiful, but go beyond a superficial beauty. Even if one is not interested in drawing, there is lots in this book to recommend it. It is not just a book about seeing and drawing, it is a book about truly living.

The Heart of Buddhist Meditation: Satipatthna: A Handbook of Mental Training Based on the Buddha's Way of Mindfulness, With an Anthology of Relevant Texts Translated from the Pali and ASIN: 0877280738
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: A definitive book on mindfulness practice
Comments: This book is a commentary on the Satipatthana Sutta, the Buddha's discourse on the four foundations of mindfulness. I read the book when I started meditation practice five years ago and have reread it twice since then, finishing my most recent read a week ago. This book explains the sutta in very clear, understandible terms making it and the practice it describes more accessible to modern western readers. The sutta and the book describe the whole of mindfulness practice both as a meditation practice and as a way of life. As a friend remarked, "Once I found this book, I realized that I didn't need to read anything else." If you want an introduction to mindfulness, this is the book for you. If you want to deepen your understanding of mindfulness, this is the book for you. It is simply the best book I've found on the subject.

Zen Meditation in Plain English ASIN: 0861713168
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Taming the mind.
Comments: I was encouraged to "just sit" when I started practicing Zen meditation, but John Daishun Buksbazen's meditation manual offers much easier intructions to Zen practice. In his Foreward to Buksbazen's how-to guide, Peter Matthiessen notes that "this gentle book . . . is a wonderful introduction to Zen Buddhism, and also an invitation to a new life" (p. 13). Buksbazen is a Zen Buddhist priest and a psychoanalyst. Meditation offers us "a way of getting deeply in touch with the true Self," he observes; "not just the narrow self; that much can be accomplished through psychotherapy or a number of other disciplines. But sitting deals with the 'big-S'-Self, that most basic level of reality that has nothing to do with culture, social status, intellect, or even personality. It deals with who you really are beyond all specifics of time and place. And who you really are, ultimately, is the universe itself" (p. 35). Organized into three parts, "Buddhas," "Sitting," and "Community," and then followed by a section of "Frequently Asked Questions," Buksbazen's 123-page book offers its reader an excellent introduction to taming our minds and discovering who we are through the practice of Zen meditation. I Am With You Always: A Treasury of Inspirational Quotations, Poems and Prayers ASIN: 0929671015
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Beautiful and Inspirational
Comments: This book is truly beautiful and inspirational. Drawing upon a wide variety of sources, from Lao Tsu to Albert Camus, the author offers poetic and inspiring quotes and verses to remind us that we are not alone, and that the human spirit has the power and strength to persevere. The book is neither sappy nor saccharine, as some of these books tend to be. The poetic selections are uplifting, hopeful, with a touch of melancholy. An example of one of the quotes: "In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer." (Albert Camus)

Comments: I am so impressed with this book, I have learned from reading the daily meditations, to stop fighting the course of life.. that's already mapped out, waiting for me to catch up. Insight Meditation: A Step-By-Step Course on How to Meditate ASIN: 1564559068
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: We all can feel Oneness with the Divine Within.
Comments: I received this as a birthday gift this year, and let e say it was a great gift indeed. Within this excellent package you will receive an excellent Step Buy Step 124 page Guide, that has to be one of the best-published books on Meditation. The book is excellent for both beginners and advanced. Also in this package one gets two spoken Meditation and breathing exercises cds, as well as a pack of 12 cards, which I laminated and placed them on my refrigerator. Just to get a quick pick at how excellent this package is, the cards are. The Four Noble Truths. The Six Wholesome and Unwholesome Roots of the Mind. The Noble Eightfold Path. The Five Handrances. The Three Kinds of Sufferings. The Four Brahma Viharas. The Eight Vicissitudes. The Six Sense Doors and Three Feeling Tones. The Four Metta Phrases. The Six Stages of Metta. The Seven Points of Posture, and The Five Precepts. The Set could have done well without the cards, but they are excellent to keep in handy, in a place where you can read them frequently. The two cds are spoken and very relaxing. You here Sharon Salzburg's calming voice as she guides you through breathing exercises, and meditations. I have a few books on Meditation, and to be honest, The book in this package, Insight Meditation, has to be my utmost favorite. I love this set, and I recommend it to all that want to relieve stress from their lives, or want to connect with the divine within. Highly Recommended.

The Science of Enlightenment: Teaching and Meditations for Awakening Through Self-Investigation ASIN: 1564555356
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: How to Reap the Benefits of Meditation
Comments: I usually like to read when I have quiet time at night, and I usually only listen to tapes when I CAN'T read, like when I'm driving. But I became so enraptured by these tapes, I ended up sitting immobile and transfixed, listening late into the night. Shinzen Young is the most intelligent, articulate teacher of Buddhism I've ever heard. He hasn't written any books yet, but he has recorded several audiotape programs. This twelve-tape set is a recording of 24 talks he gave to a live audience, with one complete talk per side of each tape. He explains what mindfulness meditation is for, exactly how to go about it, and what you can expect for results. Three of the tapes have a guided meditation on each side. Shinzen founded and runs a meditation center, and here he delivers excellent meditation instruction, but he also shows you the big picture. He knows a lot about world religions and gives a great history of Buddhism: what it evolved out of, and how it has evolved since it started. He covers some of the most important principles of Buddhism such as equanimity and the meaning of impermanence. You will learn the difference between the three branches of Buddhism and how they got to be what (and where) they are. Shinzen is well-schooled in several languages, in mathematics, and also in science, adding extra dimensions of sophistication to his explanations and lending more credibility in my Western mind for the things he says. I'm the author of the book, Self-Help Stuff That Works, and I've specialized in distinguishing practical information from ideas that are merely fascinating. All this intellectually interesting information would be pretty worthless, in my view, unless it served a practical purpose and helped to reach a practical end, which in these tapes, it does. Using this program, you can begin fairly quickly gaining the vast benefits of meditation for yourself.

Lifting The Veil, Practical Kabbalah with Kundalini Yoga ASIN: 1885562012
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Lifting the Veil, Practical Kabbalah with Kundalini Yoga
Comments: Gurunam is the first author on Kabbalah, who's philosophy resonates with mine, that of love. I have studied Kabbalah for many years and, while the information may be a common thread, the heart behind the message makes all the difference to the reciever. He is not only extremely knowledgable, but he leads the reader in the direction of the light path. This is not always so in other books. Each time I read it, I come to new realizations. Layers of my consciousness become clearer. I am making real progress with my life; which is the ultimate goal of Kabbalah. It is as if it was written in code, so that with each review, the mind and heart is touched on a new level. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to actually work on improving their life. It is a practical book that requires active participation rather than just passive reading. This book is a key to unlocking the knowledge that already exists with each of us.

It has a different message than women usually get in this culture. I need all the help I can get when it comes to accepting and cherishing myself as I am. What is in this book I have not found anywhere else. It is helping me get to know myself.
