500 Key Words for the SAT, and How to Remember Them Forever!
ASIN: 0965326330

Customer's Rating: 3
Summary: Fairly useful study tool for the vocabulary of the SATs
Comments: Although there are many descriptive pictures and definitions to help you to remember the words, only a few of them truly stuck in my memory. Instead of using this book to help remember words, I used it more as a list of commonly used SAT words. That's what really helped me the most. I was able to simply search through the book for words I didn't know and find the definitions.
Even though I'm a very visual person, the pictures didn't really help me that much. I still suggest purchasing this book, however, and using it as I said earlier, as a list of commonly used SAT words.
The Memory Book
ASIN: 0345410025

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: The basic fundamentals of how to memorize anything.
Comments: This book was an absolute joy to read. The book contains information on mnemonics, pegs, etc. This information is not particularly new, or unique to this book. But I've read other books on the subject and have not gotten as much use from it as I have this book.
In the first few chapters, you'll already begin to memorize things that you thought couldn't be memorized. I still remember a practice list of random objects in the first couple chapters, with no review or real thought about it since I purchased it back about 2 or 3 years ago (I can't remember when I purchased it, but can still remember the list - ironic, no?).
As much as I enjoyed this book and think how much it has helped me...this book did not provide me with solutions to memory issues such as "where I placed my keys" or "where I parked the car". However, I have memorized Pi to over 100 digits now using the techniques of this book.
Overall, this was a great book, as well as an enjoyable read. For memory books of it's genre, I highly recommend it.
Vocabulary Cartoons: Building an Educated Vocabulary With Visual Mnemonics
ASIN: 0965242285

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: A Excellent Resource
Comments: This book offers a much easier, funner, faster, and better way to learn and to *REMEMBER* vocabulary than most other vocabulary books (including those by Kaplan, Princeton Review, *for Dummies, Arco, and Barrons). What makes this book an excellent buy is the unique method that is employed in teaching vocabulary: humorous CARTOONS that serve as visual mnemonics! You will rarely find this strategy utilized anywhere else! Verbal mnemonics for each word are also incorportated into the book. This ensures that you will not forget the words you've learned!
The words used in this resource emphasize focus on attaining a better score on the verbal section of the SAT I. I have come across most of the 300 words in this book on sample SAT Is. I would recommend this title to those who would like to effectively increase their vocabulary in a short amount of time, especially to those with weak vocabularies.
A sample word used in this book is "ubiquitous". The verbal mnemonic is "as big as us". The visual mnemonic is a cartoon that features two extremely heavyset people who claim: When you're "as big as us" you feel "ubiquitous". (Ubiquitous, by the way, refers to the quality of being everywhere at once.)
Harry Lorayne's Page-A-Minute Memory Book
ASIN: 0345410149

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: It's good stuff
Comments: I think some of you guys are missing the point. If you recall Mr. loryane teaches the principles of memory and association at the beginning of the book. The examples in the book are used only to get you started using the systems not to teach you every single instance in which you might use them. You must grasp the principles of association and visualization first. When an understanding of those concepts have been established then you will clearly see how to twist and apply it to your own memory situations no matter what they may be. He says that at the end of the book. Read the first half carefuly then you will clearly see how he applies the concepts to situations and so will you. I have to say applying the systems to school is a lot better than my old rote technique I used all my life. I used these same techniques to raise my GPA a full point and get on the deans list twice in a row. So, any arguements are lost on experience. All those looking for a way to improve memory for school and life this is it. When you read the book don't skim and pretend like you are in some sort of training because you are. Finally, If you take it seriously, practice, and USE the systems you will reap the benefits, dont and you won't. Bye
Kanji Pict-O-Graphix: Over 1,000 Japanese Kanji and Kana Mnemonics
ASIN: 0962813702

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: also useful for Japanese
Comments: Not only for non-Japanese but also for Japanse, Kanji is somthing strange, hard to understand and interesting. Many dictionary called 'Kanwa-Jiten (kanji dictionary)' have been published in Japan, but they don't have a good idea of displaing such Kanji's attractiveness. This book has done the great thing.
Super-Memory-Super Student: How to Raise Your Grades in 30 Days
ASIN: 0316532681

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Great if you can stick with it!
Comments: This book can make you an amazing student if you stick with it. It covers all the major memory systems and has some great chapters focusing on certain hard subjects (chem, history, music)
I also reccomend The Memory Book by Harry Lorayne and Jerry Lucas. Its kind of like a big brother to this book and covers a llittle more info but does not focus specifically on school.
Remember Every Name Every Time: Corporate America's Memory Master Reveals His Secrets
ASIN: 0684873931

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Unforgettable!
Comments: I'm a chronic name forgetter, so I've read other books about memory hoping for help. This is the first one I've found that offers advice that's clear and effective (I've already had some luck with it). Maybe it works so well because the book's a great motivator: the opening chapters demonstrate how the ability to remember names has had a big impact on the author's career, and they show how highly prized the ability is by leaders in corporate America. I wish the photos had been bigger, but they work pretty well as practice material. In the long run, I'll bet "Remember Every Name, Every Time" turns out to be more valuable than the last 10 business books I've read because it's not about theory, it's about a practical skill that can result in real benefits.

Saint-Frances Guide to Inpatient Medicine
ASIN: 0683075470

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: Review of Guide to inpatient medicine
Comments: The best thing about this book is that it gives one a good basic introduction to the common problems encountered on a medicine rotation. For example, if I had a patient, come in with shortness of breath, I would quickly look at that section to jog my memory in case there was something in the differential that I had not considered. One of the best things is the mnemonics, this really helped me remember the lists of information. I think third year medical students starting their medicine rotation will best benefit from this book. I would recommend it be read early in the rotation as the book doesn't really cover pathophysiology or management in depth.
Visual Mnemonics for Microbiology

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Amazing!
Comments: The illustrations are awesome! They are easy to remember and funny at the same time. I didn't know learning about bugs could be so fun!
The Art of Memory
ASIN: 071265545X

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: intellectual history as it should be written
Comments: In this era of gigabytes and floppy disks, it is easy to forget that once upon a time we had to commit things to memory. Yates does a wonderful job of recovering the ``art of memory,'' a complex and fascinating set of techniques that were in common use for thousands of years. Orators would construct elaborate conceptual ``memory palaces'' and use them to memorize speeches of staggering length.
Well-written and erudite, Yates' book is the best work I know of on this subject. She treats ancient GReek times and the medieval era with equal ease. For further reading on the subject, try Spence's _The MEmory PAlace of MAtteo Ricci_ or Carruthers' _The Book of Memory_.
Demonic Mnemonics: Eight Hundred Spelling Tricks for Eight Hundred Tricky Words
ASIN: 0822464640

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Excellent resource for solving common spelling troubles.
Comments: This book not only explains why the specific word is spelled as it is, but also a mnemonic device to help you remember how to spell it in the future. A great tool for teachers, students, and business people alike. An example? A lot vs alot: reminder...Would you like a little, or a lot? You wouldn't spell a little as one word, so you definately wouldn't spell a lot as one word either.
Learn to Remember
ASIN: 0811827151

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: Great book, fast read
Comments: This book covers how our mind and memory works, then goes on to explain several workable techniques on memorization. I thought it did a great job of covering these topics, and was very readable. I read it in one evening (it's only 160 pages long, and includes lots of pretty drawings).
The book is written by Dominic O'Brien, a noted memorization wizard. But it was interesting that the copyright to the book went to the publisher. This is common for technical books in the computer field... where the publisher finds a hot topic and directs an author to write to their specifications. But I believe this format to be unusual in the memorization field.
The answer is found in the front cover where I discovered that there is a "Learn to ..." series put out by the publisher. As such, this book probably follows a format for that series. This format is very well done, but unfortunately reflects the comments made by an earlier reviewer: there is (or might be) more information on memory in the author's other books.
Regardless of all this backround info, I am happy I bought this book. And, I think this book updates some of the techniques that I've seen elsewhere.

Differential Diagnosis Mnemonics
ASIN: 1560533110

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Differential Diagnosis Mnemonics is a rare treasure
Comments: Not only is this an invaluable medical reference, but is so witty and artfully written, that it is easily retained by the reader for application. It speaks of a passion of the art of medicine through its useful clinical pearls and insightful observations with such perfunctional clarity that it reinforces the precision it advocates. Such functional aesthetics is so rarely appreciated and well conveyed in the written form.
Kana Pict-O-Graphix: Mnemonics for Japanese Hiragana and Katakana
ASIN: 1880656183

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Very helpful to me!
Comments: After struggling to learn kana by staring at them over and over and using rote memorization I became quite frustrated. But using the visual association/mnemonics in this book, I quickly learned both hiragana and katakana! I can now look at the formerly indecipherable characters and make some sense out of them, and am now embarking on the study of kanji. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who has tried learning kana the hard way (repeating them over and over, ad nauseum) and given up.
My only complaint is the size of the book (it's only 3X5 inches), and that he only provides memory aiding drawings for the base kana, but glosses over the voiced sounds, doublers, combined forms, etc. (for example, a drawing/memory aid is provided for ho, but not bo or po!). But this book really accelerated my learning of kana, and I highly recommend it. And it's cheap, so if you don't like it, at least you aren't out a lot of money ...

The Memory Key: Unlock the Secrets to Remembering
ASIN: 1564144704

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: Practical advice for using memory strategies
Comments: While most books on memorization usually describe memory techniques and strategies, Fiona McPherson's book takes the reader a step further. I have read over a dozen books in the area of memory, and I have discovered through experience the strengths and weaknesses of different memory techniques. In this book however, it teaches the reader how to USE memory strategies rather than just simply the techniques.
The book's approach can be aptly summarized in the phrase, "Smart selection is better than total recall." That is, effort put into understanding what you memorize, as well as why, is better and more effective for long-term recall. This is also true from my own experiences with memorization techniques. The book does not advocate placing everything into working memory. Instead, there is a balance between the cost of a memory technique (in time and effort) and using memory aids, such as creating lists. Memory recall is based not simply on techniques, but also in knowing how memory works as well as why specific strategies are effective. Like other memory books, this book also emphasizes frequent review of information. However unlike other books it provides practical tips on effective reviewing. Also the chapter on "Study Strategies" is an excellent chapter worth the price of the book. It breaks down the details for note-taking to a level that makes sense. It also describes creative ways to summarize information; these are in turn tremendous aids to understanding and ultimately, memorization of the material.
Some of the weaknesses in the book include terms that are not clearly defined for the reader at first (cues, codes) as well as a number of typographical errors (p. 42 - " traget" is target and "sues" is cues). Overall though, it is nice to pick up a book, read it and have my own experiences concerning memory validated in the book's advice. Fiona McPherson's book fills a nice niche for how to be aware of memory strategies and in the practical aspect of applying memory techniques.
Visual Mnemonics in Pathology
ASIN: 0632046449

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Fast and quick!
Comments: This book was extremely easy to follow and remember. It was very helpful for my last exam. I would recommend it to everyone! The pictures are humorous and the text is on the opposite page with room to make your own notes. Perfect for the way I study. You would be missing out if you did not buy this book for Pathology. The micro and pharm book are great also.
Your Memory: How It Works and How to Improve It
ASIN: 156924801X

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: The complete memory book
Comments: Kenneth Higbee is very direct about his memory book. He writes that he fills in a very specific niche that isn't being filled by current memory books. I think that he is right.
I have recently read 4 other memory books, Kevin Trudeau's "Mega-Memory", Tony Buzan's "Use Your Perfect Memory", Harry Lorayne's "How to Develop a Superpower Memory" and Lorayne and Lucas's "The Memory Book". I have read some of them previously, but intentionally read them over with the intent to compare them to each other and see if there was any difference.
If you are already sold on various memory techniques (pegging, loci etc...) and only want to learn the techniques, it really doesn't matter which book you read, they all contain the same information about the actual techniques. All of them usually have a little history included as well about where the techniques come from and how they developed.
Higbee, however, goes one step further than all the other books. He is aiming this book at students (I'm sure this is a text book for his memory course), educators and intelligent readers. He gives answers to long time questions that are so often asked (what is a photographic memory? Do different systems interfere with each other?, will you forget what you remember? How good are the different techniques? etc...). Higbee answers all of these and more in a clear way with little ambiguity. He provides the latest research and references to medical and psychological journals on how the techniques work, results from various students in his classes and his own experiences. He looks directly at problems with the memory systems and addresses criticism from various sources.
The book left me impressed and addressed all of my questions and even questions that friends asked me after I'd read the book. I was able to answer all of their questions without problems. Also, I found that the extra chapter on study techniques changed how I read textbooks and technical information. In fact, I began reading the rest of his book in the same way that he suggested and found it worked very well for absorbing information.
To summarise, Higbee gives various memnonic techniques that are general enough to use every day, some suggestions on how to use them, references to books that give you even more suggestions and research evidence to back it up. Higbee also warns that these aren't always worth your time. If you are looking for an easy way to get a photographic memory, look elswhere. Most of these techniques take time and effort and some can even hinder your memory if you try to use them and only put only a little time in.
This book is the kind that I recommend to friends and I think every student should probably read at least once. There are tools here that are life changing and worth your time to learn. A simply outstanding book.
Ready, set, remember

Comments: This book is the BEST book to use in order to learn capitals, or the order of the presidents. It teaches with pictures, so that they stay in your memory. I would recommend it to everyone who wants to learn the capitals of America's states.
Improve Your Memory
ASIN: 1564144593

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: great author
Comments: I am 37 year old non traditional student going back to finish a masters degree and continue with law school. Fry's books have been helpful. I have especially appreciated his remarks about adult ADD, as I have had ADDsince 4th grade, but have been untreated until recently. I am glad that distinguished authors like Mr Fry state their positions about the condition and the use in as objective terms as possible, even if they are in disagreement with this "controversial" phenomenon. This is professional authorship. I would be remiss in telling Mr Fry how to improve upon his writing. I appreciate that physicians and psychiatrists who have helped me find my way through this maze of confusion are extended the same professional courtesy. To criticize a physician for his/her skills in medicine if one is not a doctor, or to ascertain that conditions like ADD dont exist just because a person doesnt "have it" themselves is contempt prior to investigation. Thank you
Maximize Your Memory: Techniques and Exercises for Remembering Just About Anything

10 Days to a Sharper Memory
ASIN: 0446676667

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: Same top techniques but in an audio format
Comments: Whether you are trying to remember names, phone numbers, dates, appointments, lists, or other items it is easy once you have mastered the techniques presented here. While there are no new techniques presented, it does provide an overview of the various memory methods (loci, peg, phoenetic, etc.) and how each one is used. There is one difference in the phoenetic method presented here and the method as traditionally taught. The method taught here is easier to use with lists of less than a hundred items but would be more complex with larger lists. Still it is an interesting variation. This is not instant memory, but does provide the listener with the tools and techniques to remember anything you have a desire to recall. Within ten days you can gain enough knowledge to have a substantially better memory. If you are serious enough to master the techniques then they will serve you the rest of your life and you will be sure to stun others with your ability to recall just about anything you want to remember.
The Ultimate Memory Book: Remember Anything Quickly and Easily
ASIN: 0962691852

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: It really is true...and it definately lives up to it's claim
Comments: I would've considered myself to have an above-average memory before reading this book. Although I couldn't remember absolutely EVERYTHING I needed to, I got by. When you pick up this book you can take a few tests that show how poor your current memory really is. Then it makes seemingly impossible claims like being able to memorize lists of hundreds of words/numbers, license plates, anyone's name, decks of cards, and books word-for-word. But when you continue reading...and it's not a very big book at all..you start to learn its fairly simple system of relating memory to pictures, and using your own photographic memory. Within a few weeks I learned and applied the techniques and I can amaze anyone. Trust me, you will definately not be disapointed!
Kevin Trudeau's Mega Memory: How to Release Your Superpower Memory in 30 Minutes or Less a Day
ASIN: 068813582X

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: Probably the best book on memory improvment
Comments: Kevin Treudeau's Mega memory is probably one of the best book on memory improvment. His book is filled chapter by chapter with detailed instructions and step by step guides. Eveything is well written, organized and fun to learn. Sure, it does seem to treat you like "kid". But I think this approch makes the reader feel like being assisted by a real teacher and is better than just give you a set of basic instructions and let you practice them by yourself like in the tedious and boring "How to develop a super power memory" and "How to develop a perfect memory".
And by the way. I think The Federal Trade Commession seriously needs a lesson on memory study. As far as scientific research shows, true photographic memory doesn't exsist. People who were born with seemingly unbelievble memory abilities were people who born with a different way of processing information, a la visualization. For example, a guy who fell off a horse and injured himself, but after recovery gained the perfect memory. He could remember everything cause he was suddenly able to convert everything he sees or hear into pictures. If you tell him a story, he doesn't just listen, he would make images in his mind of everything he heard. He does this natrually, automatically and did it with every kind of information he could percieve. So, basically, he uses the same techniqueas any memory trainer use, except, he does it natrualy, other people have to do it manully at first. So you can see, you may think TFTC were composed of NASA scientists, but that's just not true.
And if you think memory techniques are useless for you, you might be right. You know there's a reason why none of the those memory geniuses I've ever known were millionires or brilliant scientists.

Spelling: A Mnemonics Approach
ASIN: 0538705361

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: This is the way I learned to spell (and I loved it)!
Comments: Ever wonder WHY something is spelled the way it is? This book puts most all those "exceptions" into logical groupings which follow rules! It also gives some helpful mnemonics for remembering those tough ones. I've been searching for years for something that would help my son learn to spell like my favorite 5th grade teacher did, and this is the closest thing I've found. Best spelling book out there for kids and adults middle school on up.
