Summary: It's the Mushroom Cultivation Bible
Comments: I often refer to this book at the "bible", also. And it's writen by the "Cultivation God" himself. I already knew how to cultivate before i bought this book, and had a fairly wide knowledge of the subject. The amount of information in this book is unbelievable. I was just shocked. And, in a sort of response to the person who said there's too much info - if you're going to cultivate mushrooms, the more information the better. You can get buy with just a step-by-step guide, but you won't be very successful, and if you run into problems, or want to do more, then you're not going to know what to do. If you really want to cultivate mushrooms, and you really want to enjoy it, then you've got to get this book. It's easy to understand, and gives some basic information on the life cycle and properties of mushrooms. Ask anyone that cultivates, and knows a lot about cultivating, and they'll tell you that this is a must have book. It's probably my favorite book i've ever bought. Get it!

Summary: Don't pick without it!
Comments: Not only is this book the most comprehensive and easiest to use guide on the market, it's necessary! *DO NOT* pick wild mushrooms to eat unless you own this book! As a mycologist of 25 years and gourmet cook, I relish wild mushroom dishes, but please: YOU CANNOT IDENTIFY MANY EDIBLE MUSHROOMS BY SIGHT ALONE! Spend the money to get this book and pick safely. I'm so glad it's finally fall, I'm going out to pick a basket of chantrelles for dinner! Yeay!

Summary: good photographs but it could be better
Comments: Comparing many books on mushrooms I am still looking for a great combination of features. 1) must be portable and not the size of a large size volume; 2) color photographs, possibly full page, in a natural setting, possibly at natural size; 3) text adjacent to photograph; 4) warnings on look-alike mushrooms when looking at one mushroom specifically; 5) usage of scientific names as primary references instead of common names. While this field guide excells in many of the above, each page has three color photograps, thus often the mushroom displayed is 20% the size of the actual real mushroom. Also, the text pages are separate from the photograph pages due to different type of paper used (text is on white paper), so while the picture may be on page 200, the text is on page 400. Another disappointment was the prevalent usage of common names instead of scientific names, which can be a turn-off for readers who are not from North America and couldn't care less of the local mushroom naming.

Comments: If you don't have a previous edition, be sure to get this one. If you have an older edition and have an interest in cultivating any of the added species, this edition is essential. If you just want to keep up to speed on Paul's new ideas, this book is the way to do it. We recommend it highly.

Summary: One of the definitive volumes on northest mycoflora
Comments: MNNA is a very good book, and has the finest keys I have ever found in any work on mushrooms. However, I find its coverage of certain groups of fungi to be in want of more detail. For example, the avid Russula student will find that few species have been included. The book could use more information on various genera, especially those which are in need of detailed systematic analysis, and more comprehensive data on the taxonomy of included fungi, which has been very neglected. I hope that a future edition of this book may correct some of these problems. Nevertheless, I reccomend Mushrooms of Northeastern North America to all serious amateur mycologists, you will find it to be an indispensable reference.

Comments: A well written and easy to understand book which clearly defines each type of mushroom with illustrations and photographs (in the appendix). It shows how to identify and distinguish between poisonous and hallucinogenic mushrooms (a vital skill). It also gives details on habitat. A useful reference guide. The only extra bit of advice I would give those thinking of ingesting hallucinogenic mushrooms is to always keep a sample in case something goes wrong so they can easily be identified. If in doubt don't pick. This book will certainly help reduces the confusion between similar looking psychotropic and poisonous mushrooms.

Summary: Fabulous for funghi lovers!
Comments: I recommend this book for fungi lovers old and new. Great tips and fabulous recipes, along with cute family stories. I use this book often for dinner parties and family dinners. The colorful cover makes a great coffee table addition, but I use the book so frequently I can't keep it out of my kitchen. I have given many as gifts to my culinary friends. It's a winner.

Comments: I happen to love mushrooms and am very into identifying the ones that grow in my backyard. This book was a lot more helpful to me than any of the others I found. The beginning is extremely informative, and the species guide is huge-about 240 great pictures! No book can list every one, but this one covers a great many, especially common ones you're likely to see. Get it-it's a good buy.

Comments: For a "first" book on wild mushrooms I found this one to be very good. The pictures show the top, bottom, stems, colors and different parts of each mushroom. There are "warnings" on those that are ediable, but make some people sick, and the NO-NO"s are equally shown and written about. We're just new at this, and for a "starter" book this was just the ticket.

Comments: The photography in this book is excellent. The book is keyed to the Pacific Northwest, so those who live in or visit the area will find it very easy to use. The descriptors are clear especially concerning edibility. The book fits nicely into a day pack for all you hikers out there. I would highly recomend this book, it is probably one of the best books out there!

Yo soy Colombiana y vivo en la ciudad de Manizales, Colombia; cultivo hongos de varias especies hace alrededor de 10 años, llevo un año cultivando shiitake, me interesa todo lo que se refiere a los hongos, este libro me parece interesante, porque se dedica únicamente al shiitake, los demás libros que tengo hablan de varias especies, los autores son conocidos en el mundo de los hongos y el precio del libro es sumamente accequible. Con respecto al servicio les expreso que me pareció muy buena la acogida por parte de ustedes, espero que podamos tener buenas relaciones y que nos volvamos socios comerciales. Summary: Detailed and Easy-to-Use Reference
Comments: A must-have for persons interested in identifying mushrooms (including which might be edible) and fungi (including puff balls, brackens, slime molds and plant pathogenic fungi) of the Northeast (from the eastcoast on over to Michigan). We used this guide as required text in a grad-level course I took on fungi - and I kept it after the class because it was so enjoyable. The author clearly loves his subject..and the photographs and illustrations are excellent. It also includes other vital identifying characteristics such as spore print info that are musts for a proper ID. Great though, for even those only interested in possibly finding out what the weird shelf fungus is growing on a rotting log or casual nature lovers.

Summary: A Delightful mushroom cookbook
Comments: The Shiitake Way by Jennifer Snyder is a fabulous vegetarian mushroom cookbook. The recipes are easy to follow, and great care is taken that they are all low fat and healthful. I especially love the mushroom loaf. It reminds me of my mom's meatloaf, from my childhood, but without the heavy meat. If you are interested in ways to cook these delightful mushrooms, but thought it might be difficult, try this book. It is inexpensive and well thought out. Andy Weil covers information regarding the health benefits as an added plus.
