Packing and Moving Tips That Could Save You a Fortune ASIN: 1588205398
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Packing and Moving Tips That Could Save You A Fortune
Comments: There is very valuable advice on how to pack all kinds of objects from the usual dishes and clothing to chandeliers and fountains. There are also charts to help you to load trucks and charts to help you determine how large a truck to order. The author also tells you what to pack first, what to pack last, and what to not pack at all. I'm finding it extremely helpful.

Smart Packing for Today's Traveler ASIN: 0970219652
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: A Great Travel Resource
Comments: "Smart Packing for Today's Traveler" is a super informative travel reference guide, especially helpful for (but not limited to) business travelers. The book has tips galore on selecting the right clothes and luggage, being prepared for any weather condition or social situation, and (very important) how to pack less and still get by. Susan Foster has a background in the sewing industry and definitely knows this topic well. Even frequent travelers can learn a few tricks from the "Customizing Your Wardrobe" section. Illustrations enable the most hard-headed readers (like this reviewer) to understand her valuable concepts. A bonus is that "Smart Packing for Today's Traveler" is not exclusively about packing. The last 50 pages promote comfortable, healthy, and safe travel. The section describes travel insurance, useful gadgets, and information sources. "Smart Packing for Today's Traveler" is a great travel resource and I look forward to using her techniques on future trips. Reviewed December 2002 by Charles McCool on LowerAirfares.com

The Packing Book: Secrets of the Carry-On Traveler ASIN: 1580080219
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Road Warrior learned a few tips!
Comments: I love this book! I travel every week and I always find the packing for the trip to be the worst! I absolutely dread it each week. This book helped change that! The different checklists are great for getting organized AND making sure that you pack every thing you need for your trip. The bundling system is so incredibly simple and easy... with no wrinkles once you arrive at your destination. The last part of this book is chock full of good reading on how to pack those bulky items such as shoes and winter sweaters and coats. With all the security requirements with the airlines now (and tough limits on carry-ons), I really recommend this book... and I'm a road warrior that should've figured out how to pack by now!

Packing: Bags to Trunks (Chic Simple Components) ASIN: 0679432191
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Excellent book on packing
Comments: As with all Chic Simple books, this little book is filled with good advice, beautiful pictures, interesting quotes and a nice attitude. It addresses questions such as what should I bring, how much should I bring and why should I bring anything at all? It also discusses different kinds of bags, and when they are appropriate. Not only is this book about packing for travels - it is about how to pack to commute to work or going to the gym as well. Details about how to pack clothes and how to build a travel wardrobe are also included, plus some very good lists to use as starting points, as well as a packing chart to personalize.

The Pursuit of Perfect Packing ASIN: 0750306483
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Excellent introduction to packing
Comments: A good starting discussion for packing problems, even though several issues are not covered (look at Erich's Packing Center for the next edition). Chapters cover Circle packings, sphere packings, the Hales proof, seed shapes, honeycombs, bubbles, atoms and crystals, fractal aggregates, The Giant's Causeway, buckyballs, higher dimensional packings, and various odds and ends. There are lots of illustrations and good discussions. I would have prefered for more to be packed into the book. Still, it's the best introductory book on packing I know of.

Steiner's Complete How-To-Move Handbook ASIN: 0913733148
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Steiner's Complete How-To-Move Handbook
Comments: This is the most complete book on moving that I have ever read. It delivers the promised information in a very readable and entertaining text. Some of its best features include the great worksheets, charts, sample forms, lists and timelines which will assist anyone in planning and accomplishing a successful move. I have made 9 or 10 moves in the past 25 years and can say, unequivocably, that although I have read (and used) many nice "moving" books...this is absolutely the BEST!

Making the Big Move: How to Transform Relocation into a Creative Life Transition ASIN: 1572241357
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Unique, useful, insightful book. NOT a checklist, though
Comments: This book was useful to me. I realized that I was mourning a move two moves ago! :-) Explains a lot of the emotional stuff we go through as part of a move that we may not be expecting, may not understand, other may not be prepared to support us through. This book isn't a "how-to" checklist type of book. It was unique look at moving, how to decide whether to move, steps you can take to make the move smooth and derail any possible emotional upsets. Well worth the price.

Making Your Move to One of America's Best Small Towns ASIN: 0871319888
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: A good guide to start
Comments: As a resident of one of the 120 "best small towns" recommended by Norman Crampton, I was delighted to see Silver City on the list. While Crampton's book is a good place to start your search for small town living, it is important to realize that each small town offers a unique personality. Some generalizations simply do not apply to Silver City. For example, it is not necessary to join a church (or country club) in order to fit in here. Even a small community like ours has diverse sub-populations: recent retirees, most of whom have some affinity for the arts; old-timers, most of whom are the conservative church-goers Crampton describes; and Hispanic families, many of whom have worked in the mines. These groups rarely interact, although we usually get along very peacefully. We also have a number of folks who teach at the university -- and we rarely see them around town. To learn about Silver city, you won't get much information from the Chamber of Commerce or the editor of the newspaper. You'd do better to spend some time hanging out at the AIR cafe, talking to whoever comes in. The morning and afternoon groups are quite different and everyone is friendly. The author gives some nuts and bolts about each small town. Unfortunately, with the exception of weather, much of this information will change by the time the book is printed. And your decision may well be made by factors that can't be added up. The best part of the book is the section on economics of small town living. Here, he's right on. You have to budget for travel to a large city now and then. Air travel will be more costly and you need time to drive to a large airport. His view of housing prices seems optimistic. If you move to a desirable city (such as Silver City) expect to pay more for a house than he allows. And if you move to retire, your economic picture will be quite different. Many newcomers to Silver City are beginning a second career as an artist or writer. Moving without a job is scary -- and I do not recommend it unless you fit the profile I describe in my own book, Making the Big Move.

Making the Move: A Practical Guide to Senior Residential Communities ASIN: 0380789817
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: It's About Time
Comments: Lettice Stuart understands the complexities of making a move as a child and as a parent facing the inevitable. Her guide to seniors and their children is intended to clarify difficult issues and define the process that we must all go through, making the complex simple, the foreign familiar. Anyone who has reached middle age (dreading the new mail, unsolicited, from AARP), will most likely still bear responsibility for a parent who is at least 20 years older, and Stuart's book helps inform and arm the child of an aging parent for the struggle that both will face, willy nilly. Stuart's organization is clear, her definitions precise (helping us distinguish among many slippery terms for each of many critical categories of understanding this process of transition), and her resolve absolute: we will all face this challenge, whether we wish to or not, and those of us who face it with knowledge and foresight will be in a position to find not only succor but happiness. This seems like a tall order to fill, but just wait until it is your turn. Words that seem foreign will suddenly ring true, and concepts that you never imagined possible in your situation will become clear and manageable. I wish that I had Lettice Stuart on my shoulder the whole way though the process of transitioning a loved, aging parent into the next exciting phase of life. But having her tidy, lucid paperback in my pocket is the next best thing! Jean May
