Qigong Empowerment: A Guide to Medical, Taoist, Buddhist, Wushu Energy Cultivation ASIN: 1889659029
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Unique Information Immensely Practical and Useful
Comments: Definitely the best book on QiGong available in English to date. And no doubt better than a lot, if not most, of the QiGong books in Chinese. The "varieties" of QiGong in China number in the THOUSANDS, this book presents some of the best in essence. This 348-page volume is divided into five chapters or "Books". The materials contained in Book 1 (Medical QiGong) are pretty basic, and commonly available, though useful for beginners. The last chapter (Book 5) on WuShu QiGong will be primarily of interest to martial artists and some athletes. The weakness here is that it covers only the "Hard" techniques, but does not include the "Soft" or internal methods like TaiJi and similar QiGongs. Taoist QiGong is covered in Book 2. Being an integral part of Chinese culture from the beginning, Taoism can claim to have the most elaborate and comprehensive QiGong practices. These emcompass the whole spectrum of physical to spiritual development purposes. The disadvantage of Taoist QiGong is that sometimes it can get overly complicated, and burdened by cultural dross. The authors however, have been able to present the information in a reasonably simple and straightforward way, easily comprehensible to those not steeped in ancient Chinese lores. The most unique part is Book 3, which is about Buddhist QiGong, more specifically QiGong as taught in some Tantric Buddhist traditions. Most of the information contained here are not easy to come by, even for students of Tantric Buddhism. This is really a pity as, in my experience, Buddhist QiGong has some of the most powerful and profound techniques. So the author really has done a great service to the general public by sharing such information in a non sectarian way. For some this section alone will justify getting the whole volume. Book 4 teaches the principles and techniques to develop (build), regulate and work with Qi (both within and outside of the individual) for a variety of purposes, especially healing. These really make up the foundation for any advance QiGong cultivation. After you have mastered them, the rest are easy. This section is invaluable to those involved in energetic healing work. ( If you find a QiGong teacher who teaches you these techniques early in your study, you most likely have a good and generous teacher, it may be worth your while to stick around.) The language used throughout the volume is simple and straightforward, the instructions are direct and easy to understand. The numerous photos, charts and illustrations are clear and helpful. Though the volume also contains a fair amount of philosophical and technical details, much of these can be skimmed over without impeding the learning of the QiGong methods, if you are impatient. You can always refer back to them later when necessary. An immensely practical book well worth the price.

The Healing Promise of Qi: Creating Extraordinary Wellness Through Qigong and Tai Chi ASIN: 0809295288
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: A many splendid book
Comments: At first, I related to this book lightly and let others that had a more flamboyant approach to the subject of Tai Chi and Qigong capture my interest. But then there came a moment when The Healing Promise of Qi took over to become a permanent feature of my reading life now for many months. With little mystery and great charm Roger Jahnke explains the Qigong way of solving some of the greatest mysteries of them all - how to joyfully unburden ourselves of emotional baggage and trauma and physical, mental and emotional disharmony in order to allow the wonders of life to express healing energy within us. All this he does admirably with little ego and much compassion. The insights in this book are many as so are its blessings. My heartfelt thanks to the writer for his truly wonderful gift.

The Root of Chinese Qigong: Secrets for Health, Longevity and Enlightenment ASIN: 1886969507
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: Good Theory, Little Application
Comments: Dr. Yang's book, "The Root of Chinese Qigong" is a good resource for the theory of qigong. He goes into great detail explaining history and theory. Although he offers a few directions for applying the information, application is not the main thrust of this book. So don't expect many pictures and directions for qigong exercises. This book would be a good complement to other qigong books more concerned with the actual exercises, or if you already study qigong with a teacher the book is good supplementary reading. I wouldn't recommend this book if you've never had any exposure to qigong before, because a lot of the information would not be meaningful to someone who had never practiced. One should note, that Dr. Yang's degree is a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering and not a degree in traditional chinese medicine. Until I read his bio, I had assumed he was a doctor of chinese medicine. Regardless, Dr. Yang has done a lot of research into the field of qigong. He is more than qualified to write this book. He is also one of the world's leaders in teaching and promoting chinese martial arts.

Qi Gong for Beginners: Eight Easy Movements for Vibrant Health ASIN: 0915801752

Comments: Qi gong can seem overwhelming, which is why this book is a little gem. It gives you the essence of qi gong as well as a valuable start with 8 exercises, all very clearly demonstrated with a series of step-by-step photographs. The Way of Qigong: The Art and Science of Chinese Energy Healing ASIN: 0345421094
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: A combination of disciplines
Comments: Ken Cohen's book not only does a great job in explaining the energetics and healing effects of qigong, but it is one of the few books to tie qigong and energy to other disciplines such as the PNI (PsychoNeouroImmunology) and native american health practices. In this way, the book itself is a complimentary therapy for qigong to be used by others. It's also nice to read a book where the reader can tell immediately that the author has done his homework since there are source notes and a great bibliography for the new student to qigong to use and explore.

18 Buddha Hands Qigong - A Medical I Ching Exploration ASIN: 0924071990
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Highly recommended for students of Buddhism, Qigong, I Ching
Comments: Buddhism, Qigong, the I Ching, and Chinese medicine have been integrally linked together for centuries. All these systems originate from a common theoretical view of reality and compliment, clarify, support, and occasionally challenge each other. Larry Johnson's 18 Buddha Hands Qigong examines Qigong in general, and the energetic transformations possible through these practices, exploring what is referred to as 18 Buddha Hands presents an intriguing perspective of the Yin/Yang mechanics of Qigong, within the manifold framework of the Medical I Ching. 18 Buddha Hands Qigong is highly recommended for students of Buddhism, Qigong, the I Ching, personal health from the perspective of Chinese medical practice and theory.

Eight Simple Qigong Exercises for Health: The Eight Pieces of Brocade ASIN: 1886969523
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Real Poetry
Comments: Having had a certain experience in Chi Kong and Tai Chi, I found this book very helpful, as a matter of fact a real poetry both intellectually and CHI wise. I have read many of Dr. Yang's books which I found very instructive. I wanted this book for its exercises and was attracted by the fact that they can be performed in 10-20 minutes. This was my only disappointment. How can this be possible when you have to perform each exercise at least 24 times? Personally, it takes me about 40 minutes, 40 enjoyable minutes.

Taijiquan, Classical Yang Style: The Complete Form and Qigong ASIN: 188696968X
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Perfect for the Newbie!
Comments: I have developed a deeper interest in martial arts, especially Taijiquan and Baguazhang, only recently. Dr. Yang's book answered many of my questions about the religious, philosophical, and spiritual roots of Taijiquan. I appreciate the time and effort spent in teaching this background information in the clear and understandible form in which it is presented. I recommend this book as excellent supplemental reading for Taijiquan history, philosophy, and understanding while studying the art itself.

Qigong for Health and Well-Being ASIN: 1885203799
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: A terrific self-healing guide!
Comments: The market is flooded with qigong (chi kung) books. The magazines are filled with "masters" of this esoteric discipline. There are classes in every major city across the world. So how do we, as novices, determine which system or master is best-siuted to us? We try them and stick with what works. For 30 years I have suffered from migraines, chronic spinal pain, and a general lack of energy. I have tried the Western treatments of massage, chiropractic, and bio-feedback. Nothing worked. I then purchased this little book of qigong exercises by FaXiang Hou and Mark Wiley, I practiced the self-healing exericises as described for three months. The result: I am pain free! I am truly amazed at the efficacy of the exercises, and even at the seemingly simple presentation of the material in the book. It does not bog the reader down with heavy discourse, philosophy, or Eastern thought. What it does do is offer in clear language the exercises needed to build and maintain vital energy (qi) in the body to relieve and prevent pain and illness. It works and you should by this book if all else has failed!
|
Qigong, The Secret of Youth ASIN: 1886969841
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: Valuable source material about transforming vital energy
Comments: Yang uses Buddhist and Taoist documents, reproduced and translated section by section, to explain the esoteric training methods Yi Jin Jing and Xi Sui Jing. The first method generate qi to strengthen muscles and tendons, the second teaches Huan Jing or how to return vital energy through the spine to energize the brain. Evidently very baffled by certain aspects of these exercises, Yang sometimes has to conjecture. His translation is uncertain, yet this description includes valuable source material withheld in the popular books by Mantak Chia. This is an early work of a prolific writer who could really use an editor, and readers may find the non-standard Cantonese transliterations rather puzzling.

Musical Qigong: Ancient Chinese Healing Art from a Modern Master ASIN: 0966542150
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: How ancient Chinese music is related to human organs
Comments: Musical Qigong is a special healing energy therapy which combines the two ancient Chinese traditions of healing music and Qigong. Master Shen Wu (founder of musical Qigong and director of the Chinese Traditional Medical Institute) draws upon his more than twenty years of Qigong medical practice in China and America to focus on the five major organs of the body and how the use of musical Qigong enlivens the mind, relaxes the body, and lifts the spirt. There are two complete sets of photographically illustrated exercises, as well as a full and complete explanation of how musical Qigong is related to acupuncture, tai chi, feng shui; how ancient Chinese music is related to human organs; and how to perform Qigong in the most authentic way. Musical Qigong is highly recommended to students of Chinese medicine and metaphysics, as well as practitioners of alternative medicine.

The Practice of Qigong: Meditation and Healing ASIN: B00005499R

Comments: Though this was my first experience in Qigong, I found the tapes clear and easy to follow. A good source of meditation material for self-help as well as for teaching others.
|
The Power of Qi ASIN: B00005499U
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: a compilation of his other tapes
Comments: Ken Cohen tapes are easy to listen to and understand. Through them the listener gaines a working knowledge of a complex philosophy. The breathing tapes are extremely helpful as are the meditations included in one volume. If you are looking for a very good introduction to Qigong this three volume set is the perfect place to start. However there is one caveate to be aware of. This set is a compilation of three individual tapes he released in previous years. If you buy this set, there is no need to order the others as individuals. This is not necessarily made clear in the description of the tapes and one could find himself duplicating his order.

Qigong for Health and Vitality ASIN: 0312141289
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Very helpful
Comments: As a complete beginner to Qigong, I find this an invaluable guide for my daily practice. Highly recommended for anyone beginning the practice of this effective form of healing.

Beginning Qigong: Chinese Secrets for Health and Longevity ASIN: 0804817219
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Great book very easy to understand and follow.
Comments: This is a very good book for anyone interested in Quigong. This book is very well written in plain and easy to understand language. The divisions in the book are natural and allow you to progress at your leisure. The illustrations are very clear and go hand in hand with the instructions. I would recommend this book, and as a matter of fact,I have to anyone that has a willingness to learn the beginnings of Quigong.

Qigong: Essence of the Healing Dance ASIN: 1558746749
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: Good for beginners
Comments: This is a good book for beginners and for those who know nothing about Chi Gong. My only criticism and why I gave this book three stars is that the illustrations are not comprehensive at all. It was frustrating for me to figure out the moves by reading the text. Granted, it is far better to learn Chi Gong with an instructor but Mr. Garripoli would have done his readers a service by providing more and better illustrations of the moves.

Back Pain: Chinese Qigong for Healing and Prevention ASIN: 1886969515
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: The book that taught me to be FREE of back pain FINALLY!
Comments: Dr. Yang explains his qigong theory, with modern scientific data, which made me finally understand what people are talking about when they discuss 'QI' in the body. Dr. Yang, with a PhD in mechanical engineering, explains that 'qi(CHI)' is the bio-electricity we've heard so much about in the last decade here in the US, and that Chinese Taoists for centuries have been aware of it, studying it, and utilizing it for amazing health benefits, kung fu, enlightenment, and and perhaps even immortality. Dr. Yang DEMYSTIFIES qigong in a way noone else has, from his own experience, without the EGO most other authors can't help but to include. The exercises are simple, and if you slowly work them into your daily routine, they will rid you of any back pain you may have experienced, and various other health problems you may have had! I've never had so much energy. Thanks to Dr. Yang for explaining so thoroughly, so that even my close-minded sister was able to understand, and fix her back!

The Qigong Year ASIN: 1580174434
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: A Solid Intro to QiGong
Comments: Check out the fittest people in any gym, and you will usually note that flexibility is a key component of their program. Check any truly spiritually centered person, and notice the glow of serenity than surrounds them. Combine both, and you understand why Western thinking is scurrying to latch onto QiGong. Combining gentle, flexible movement with breathing and visual meditation, Qi Gong is difficult to learn by book alone. Having said that, I found "The QiGong Year" to be the most helpful of texts in introducing this method of movement which promotes positive qi (energy), healing, and a healthy mind. Mr, Bruney breaks his introduction to the phases of QiGong down on a month-by-month basis, and writes in easy to follow prose, focusing on the Ba Duan Jin (8 Fine exercises). Some poems, meditations and Taoist traditions help explain the value of the program. And the illustrations, paper and colors used in publishing this book were very carefully chosen to maintain harmony with the theme of the writing, something rarely promoted in Western literature. Obviously, the best way to learn QiGong is through work with an expert. Barring that, The qiGong Year makes for a very acceptable substitute.

Qigong Energy Healing: Five Elements Rejuvenation Therapy ASIN: 0914955691
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Great book for a busy lifestyle
Comments: I was very depressed over the past two years and didn't know what to do. Also, my weight problem went over the roof, I went from 109 lbs to over 140 lbs in half year. I bought this book because a friend of mine has taken Master Bai Yin's class in Germnany before and she recommended that I gave it a try. I followed the book and practiced for three months, and now my weight dropped down to 114 lbs and I feel great about myself. I didn't know anything about Natrual healing therapy before and didn't believe in it either, but this time I have to say that it really works. The great thing about this exercise is that it doesn't take much of your time. I usually practice 5 to 10 minutes a day, and feel all energetic afterwards. So I recommend that this is a great book for anyone with a busy lifestyle.

Qigong: Chinese Medicine or Pseudoscinece? ASIN: 1573922323
Customer's Rating: 2 Summary: A Critisim of Qigong with Pseudoscience method
Comments: Lin Zixin et al's new book "Qigong: Chinese Medicine orPseudoscience?" is among the few Qigong books that tried to conduct some scientific exploration of the Qigong essence. If you are seriously looking for Qigong's scientific background, or planning to conduct some scientific research on Qigong and its applications, this book will definitely be helpful to avoid you from taking all Qigong as granted truth, and from simplifying the research design. >> The book consists of five chapters: 1. Traditional Chinese Medicine and Qigong, started with the glorious history of Qigong, it reveals the ancient origin of Qigong, some important methods, facts about Qigong and the benefits of Qigong practice. 2. External Qigong, it basically denies the very existence of external Qigong and criticizes some famous research on external Qigong done in the 1980s. Authors claimed the essence of Qigong is mind activities or psychological effects. 3. Itinerant Quackery, completely denied the possibility that Qigong may be used to diagnose diseases, and revealed how some street quackery used the name of "Qigong super abilities" to cheat patients. 4. The Debate on Human Extraordinary Ability vs. Qigong (Inner Kung Fu), it discloses some fake Qigong demonstrations and the reality of unsuccessful efforts to examine the human extraordinary ability, and criticizes four famous Chinese Qigongists. 5. Qigong and Ultra Deviation, it explains the major symptoms of so-called "ultra deviation" (Zhou Huo Ru Mo) in Qigong practice, why it occurs, and how to avoid it. It is not hard to see what attitude the authors possess in terms of scientific nature of Qigong. >> Unfortunately it is a cruel fact that there are much more fake Qigong masters out there than real honest Qigong masters, both in China and in the United States, and these fake Qigong masters brought more harm or disturbance than good or benefit in promoting Qigong and Qigong research. Lin Zixin's book will non-doubt help readers to identify some major quackeries of fake Qigong masters or medical Qigong practitioners who lack of knowledge of Qigong essence. >> The book was coauthored by six Chinese scholars, some of them are popular debunkers of pseudoscience, and all of them have publicly criticized the research of external Qigong in China. As one of the many academic perspectives about Qigong research, there is nothing wrong for them to state their perspectives publicly. However, the timing of its publication with some out-of-date research data make readers suspect its political motivation and possible government sponsorship. Some of the authors are supposed to be serious scientists; but the way they presented data, and the conclusions they reached based on very limited observations really lack of objectivity and scientific seriousness... END

Qigong: Chinese Movement and Meditation for Health ASIN: 0877287589
Customer's Rating: 1 Summary: Pass
Comments: Very superficial. You won't learn much unless you're a complete novice, and even still I don't believe this book will help you much. I'd recommend The Way of Energy to anybody, instead.

The Essence of Qigong: A Handbook of Qigong Theory and Practice ASIN: 0964991217
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Finally a decent and intelligent introduction to qi gong
Comments: Books on qi gong tend to have two flaws: being overly practical (move this way) or burying the beginner in theory. This book picks a nice middle ground, where theroy and practical concerns are mixed. The authors attempt to put qi qong in relations to modern science (not badly done) and religions (totally misunderstands Christianity). Practice advice is given for the beginner and a fair bit of theory (in readable terms). It's a good book and one I'd recommend to a beginner. A less silted writing styles and more illustrations would be nice but its definitely worth the money.

Living Qigong: The Chinese Way to Good Health and Long Life ASIN: 1570621063
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Good and simple, one view on Qigong...
Comments: Unlike other books on Qigong, this one does not strive to provide scientific validation for Qigong, nor is it filled with scholarly references and parallelisms with other systems of excercise a/o health and healing. Neither is it a vast array of different Qigong practices presented as a catalog for the reader to pick and choose from. Rather, this book chronicles Alton's experinces during the two-year period he spent in China learning Qigong from his teacher. Loosely chronological, Alton's story is freely interspersed with theoretical information on both Qigong and Chinese Medicine, presented the way a good teacher would present it to the student as he/she progresses in his/her learning. There are a couple of details which I've never heard any of my teachers mention, yet they make sense, both in theory and in practice. His Qigong set is presented at the end of the book, and although the author repeatedly emphasizes the need to learn from a good teacher, the set is simple enough to try it out yourself. It is one of the best Qigong routines I've ever practiced! There are no extensive discussions on the hows and whys, yet all the main tenets and principles of Qigong practice are presented in this book, in a comprehensive, down-to-earth manner. This book, simple, slim, and full of wisdom, is also one of the deepest and most heartfelt discussions I've read on Qigong.

Life More Abundant: The Science of Zhineng Qigong Principles and Practices ASIN: 0741400731
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: A true guidebook for the west.
Comments: The book is excellent. A hardcover is a must for the second edition. It's truly a good "meal" for the hungry ChiLel/Zhineng practitioners. So many new things I discovered in the book made me doubt the authenticity of the so called "ChiLel" teaching in North America. Is it really an offset of Zhineng Qigong?
We'd better explore it by ourselves.

Change the Picture: A Xuan Ming Dao Qigong Workbook ASIN: 189268604X
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Most Excellent!
Comments: "Change the Picture" is the first in the series of Qigong workbooks presented by Master Yu-Cheng Huang. This book gives a step by step system of building a Qigong practice. The book is comprised of levels I and II with each volume containing twelve weekly lessons which are the basic foundations of Xuan Ming Dao Qigong. Each lesson builds on the previous week's lesson and contains a section on theory, method, and practice. Levels I and II teach one how to cleanse, gather, and activate the energy (QI)
and how to tonify the body. Thumbs up for Master Huang's "Xuan Ming Dao" Qigong workbook series. Unlike most Qigong books that just teach a basic Qigong or other books that teach advanced methods (which can only be useful to students with higher skills), Master Huang's system is written for the beginner and will have you gradually build your practice step by step. Advanced students will benefit from the added information on subjects such as TCM, Qigong theory, and the "extra thoughts" presented with each lesson. Moreover, all the workbooks are written in a straightforward and easy to understand manner. Master Huang stresses that if one should wish to learn Qigong one should find a good teacher. I would suggest that if you cannot find a good teacher these workbooks are the next best thing to learn from. "Think the Good Thing" is the second book in the series.

Scientific Qigong Exploration ASIN: 0965713571
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Opening the Doors of Science for Increased Human Potential
Comments: As a Qigong practitioner I have studied a great deal. I was even fortunate enough to travel to China and take part in a collaborative exchange with the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. So, I knew before reading this book that Qigong practice has a massive ability to increase human potential on all levels. However, I must say that the information contained in this book BLEW ME AWA"> The experiments themselves are kind of dry reading but the implications they have on the potential for human growth are staggering. And the scientists who conducted these experiments are not people who are easily swayed by whimsical tales and flights of fancy, they are hard core scientists and physicists who are among the top the Chinese have to offe"> While this book is not a how to book for Qigong, I believe all Qigong practitioners should read it. My own potential has increased dramatically as a result of this book, simply because it presented me with information which allowed me to expand my own formally self limited realm of possibility.

Healing Energy: Master Zi Sheng, Wang and Tibetan Buddhist Qigong ASIN: 083512679X
Customer's Rating: 2 Summary: About a great healer
Comments: Master Wang is one of China's great energy healers and a fascinating personality who has visited America for several years to teach Taoist and Tibetan Qigong. I have attended a dozen of his healing workshops and recommended several acupuncture patients to attend, and he gets results. So I would like to give this book high rating but that's not possible. Although it gives basic background and presents some interviews of people who benefit from treatments, it really misses the chance to present either a portrait of a wonderful, fascinating healer or an in-depth examination of an extraordinary healing modality. This is more like an advertising document, descriptions of workshops are lifted from the healing brochure, and most of the details could be heard by anyone who attends a couple of workshops. In a day and age when there exists a substantial body of excellent literature on Qigong, Taoism, Budhhism and Tibetan studies, this book still preaches on the tired theme that the West doesn't understand Eastern philosophy. Still, anyone who reads this is encouraged to attend Master Wang's healings and workshops, and you can easily get your own ideas beyond what is offered here.

The Complete Idiot's Guide(R) to T'ai Chi ASIN: 0028629094
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: A superb introduction to T'ai Chi and QiGong
Comments: QiGong (chee kung) means "breath work." Chinese references include nearly 7,000 QiGong exercises, some of which may be done while sitting or lying down. T'ai Chi (tie chee) is a form of QiGong. All T'ai Chi exercises are done while standing or moving. Bill Douglas has studied and taught QiGong and T'ai Chi for twenty years. His latest book, The Complete Idiot's Guide to T'ai Chi and QiGong, presents his accumulated knowledge in an easy-to-understand guide. Douglas says that "whether you are stressed out, continually exhausted, treating a health problem, or just wanting to get in shape and feel young again, T'ai Chi is just what you need." Qi is also known as the "energy of life." Stress, tension, and ill health stop the flow of Qi throughout the body. T'ai Chi exercises are easy to do, incorporating breathing and relaxation techniques in slow and relaxed movements. Douglas describes each exercise thoroughly, including information not just on the physical movement, but on the mental awareness it brings as well. Photographs accompany each exercise. He includes a section of advanced movements for those who have mastered the basics. He also includes special sections for children, seniors, sports, and healing therapy. The appendix lists organizations and energy work centers for those desiring to practice with others. Douglas also includes a complete glossary. More than 2,000 years old, T'ai Chi is the most popular exercise today. People like it not only for its simplicity, but because it "simultaneously heals the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual body." Readers wanting to learn how to obtain these benefits for themselves will find that The Complete Idiot's Guide to T'ai Chi and QiGong provides the answers to their questions as well as the "how-to" they need. -- Sandra I.
