Focal Point: A Proven System to Simplify Your Life, Double Your Productivity, and Achieve All Your Goals
ASIN: 0814471293

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Plenty of Wisdom---and a System
Comments: Personal development, in years past, has been a primary interest among people of all ages. We don't hear as much about the topic today as we used to. Nevertheless, the need is still present . . . perhaps even more than ever before. With so many people today focused on their computers, some have forgotten about the fine art of balanced personal growth.
Brian Tracy is a master in the field of personal and professional development. His speeches, seminars, and consulting around the globe have contributed to Tracy's reputation. He is highly respected and quite influential, particularly among the thousands who attend his presentations each year. As Tracy lived his life, then taught others his system, his approach was continually refined. In Focal Point, it all comes together for anyone who reads the book.
Focal Point explains how users of this tool (you'll do more than just read the words in this book to get its powerful total value) can unlock their full potential. At the same time, using the system will enable you to double your productivity and simplify your life. Of course, this sounds like the makings of a fine motivational speech; Tracy is a motivator. But, this book invests most of its pages in the how-to.
The chapters are filled with the knowledge of the sages in this field. Many teachings will sound familiar-good! In Focal Point, all that advice is pulled together into one place, one system to learn and apply. A listing of the chapter headings will reveal what you will explore in these pages: Tap Your Most Precious Resource, Practice Personal Strategic Planning, Supercharge Your Business and Career, Improve Your Family and Personal Life, Achieve Financial Independence, Enjoy Superb Health and Fitness, Become Everything You Are Capable of Becoming, Make a Difference in Your Community, and Spiritual Development and Inner Peace. Note that these are how-to chapters, filled with things like "Six Steps to Doubling Your Income and Doubling Your Time Off" and "Seven Keys to Higher Productivity." Each chapter includes challenging questions to help you see where you still have some work to do.
Tracy's Focal Point process consists of seven steps to be applied in each area of concern:
values, vision, goals, knowledge and skills, habits, daily activities, and actions. The whole valuable system is explained so you can use the book as a tool to make a substantial difference in yourself, your success, and your personal satisfaction. The book concludes with a chapter on Seven Lessons for the Twenty-First Century, a List of Values, a Recommended Reading list, and an index.
If you want to strengthen your life, your effectiveness, and your happiness, you'll discover a great friend in Focal Point. And you'll probably recommend it to your friends. It's just that kind of a book: it bothers you, makes you uncomfortable, but shows you how to make the improvements you want to need and desire. Go for it!
Simplify Your Life: 100 Ways to Slow Down and Enjoy the Things That Really Matter
ASIN: 0786880007

Customer's Rating: 2
Summary: simplistic simplification
Comments: The book reads like a collection of household tips, e.g., "Hints from Heloise".
Truly simplifying your life takes a lot more thought and effort than the tips in this book would imply. We live in a society that strongly encourages us to consume and/or strive for status. Real life simplification for many people, myself included, has meant painfully recognizing and kicking away many ego crutches, summoning up the discipline to let go of a lot in order to focus on what really matters.
To her credit, the author has a significantly deeper take on this whole process in her later book, "Living the Simple Life". That is recommended as a complete replacement for "Simplify Your Life"; don't waste your time on it unless your intent is just to free up a few hours in an otherwise unchanged lifestyle.
Also consider "Voluntary Simplicity" by Duane Elgin. It offers a sociologist's perspective, which is a bit dry but includes opinions of dozens of people he encountered in his research on the nationwide movement toward a less materialistic, more relationship-oriented style of living.
Powerful Leadership: How to Unleash the Potential in Others and Simplify Your Own Life
ASIN: 0130668362

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Well-Grounded Advice
Comments: Many managers may never seek to refine their management style. Subconsciously, they may feel that their "many years of experience" or innate intelligence has rightfully propelled them to their current position. For other managers, who constantly strive to improve their performance in the workplace, this book is for you.
At first glance, the topics covered may seem intuitive. Readers may initially shun chapters that underscore the importance of ethics, employee independence, and worker satisfaction, dismissing them as old hat and self-explanatory. Upon further inspection however, the unsuspecting reader will discover that the book's true power lies in its explicit detail of the benefits associated with these seemingly well-trodden concepts. The book does an exceptional job of weaving the topics back into a bigger picture of organizational success.
In order to help readers incorporate the book's seven essential changes into their own affairs, the authors include several memorable narratives in the latter chapters. Told from a very personable and realistic standpoint, readers should find these stories easy to understand and easy to relate to.

Organized to Be Your Best! Simplify and Improve How You Work
ASIN: 0944708609

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: As practical and applicable as it is "reader friendly"
Comments: Now in an updated and expanded fourth edition, Susan Silver's Organized To Be Your Best!: Simplify And Improve How You Work continues to be an indispensable instruction manual enabling the reader to control multiple, ever-changing projects and priorities, intense workloads and information overload. Readers will learn to manage email, voice, fax, and other instant communications, devise a time and information management system tailored to their needs, work more effectively with others, master a messy desk and "piles of files", maximize the work space (including alternative, virtual, and home offices), and get the most from the computer and the Internet. Very highly recommended, Organized To Be Your Best! is as practical and applicable as it is "reader friendly" and workplace productivity improving.
Simplify Your Work Life: Ways to Change the Way You Work So You Have More Time to Live
ASIN: 0786885963

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: Some great ideas, but a little biased
Comments: Everyone working in America today should read "Simplify Your Work Life." People in the U.S. work way too much--and for what? Work is important, but it shouldn't be the only thing you do with your life. Elaine St. James offers simple suggestions to eliminate unnecessary work and stress from our lives. It's sad that our culture today thinks that people who work under 40 hours a week are "lazy". St. James tells us this is not true, and we can get as much work done working under 40 hours a week as working 60 hours a week, if only we learned how to manage our time better. People can get overwhelmed with our modern work society (with email, faxes, internet, etc.), but St. James says it doesn't have to be this way.
My only complaint about the book is that it seems biased towards salaried professionals who work in offices. Her suggestions about reducing your work time, taking more breaks, etc., aren't relevant to hourly wage workers who HAVE to work a certain amount of hours or else get a cut in pay. Those same workers also can't take breaks whenever they want to. A lot of her examples revolve around people who have their own businesses (much like herself). Of course THEY can manage their own time--they're their own boss!
Even so, a lot of the other tips she gives can be applied to everyone. Whether you need ways to find more time for yourself or need to reduce the stress in your life, this is the book for you! Easy to read and to the point.
The Biscuit Joiner Project Book: Tips and Techniques to Simplify Your Woodworking Using This Great Tool
ASIN: 1558705929

Customer's Rating: 3
Summary: Read it for the examples
Comments: I bought Hugh Foster's "Biscuit Joiner Handbook" at a firesale at the local bookshop and read it from start to end. Foster's book is about the biscuit joiner as a machine, how it operates, and outlines the different kinds of joints one can create.
Next, I bought Jim Stack's book and I was pleased because it has lots of project examples that showed me where and how, in many different types of wooden furniture construction, I could apply biscuit joinery. This is the kind of information Hugh Foster's book does not have. As a result, I was able to pick up a Furniture and Cabinetmaking magazine, look at a project for a blanket chest that had 20+ mortise and tenon joints, and figure out how to replace those joints with biscuit joints!
The other benefits from the book were the good, sharp photographs; Hugh Foster's book has black and white photographs that are murky and indistinct and I had trouble distinguishing the workbench, the wood and the tool in lots of the photos
I did not give Jim Stack's book higher stars because there are a few subediting mistakes (e.g. wrong project and steps used in cross references - its annoying to be directed to project "x" to see how to do something when project "x" does not show this), I think it lacks an end-to-end example of how to make a panel door using biscuits and the (to me) dangerous examples of the use of circular saws (no riving attachment, no cover over the blade, fingers awfully close to the moving blade) and the jointer (fingers too close to the moving blades). I would have found the last acceptable if there had been a notice at the front saying the riving attachment and cover had been removed temporarily to make the pictures clearer.
Lastly, a suggestion for the next edition. Please add in the warning that the biscuit joiner must be up to full speed before the plunging is done in order to prevent kickback and cutting your hand - there is a nasty accident detailed on the Internet somewhere (Mick's Woodworking Tools page???) that was caused by the person plunging before the machine was at full speed.
Summary: complements Hugh Foster's Biscuit Joiner book really well, buy it for the examples of when and how to use, be aware of the dangerous circular saw and jointer photos.

Summary: information is too lightweight
Comments: I did not get much of value from this book. It never really pushed home its concepts. There were certain important points, but there was not enough development or examples of the points to help much. Yet it was also not the type of book which is full of clever tips for "advanced simplifiers" (to coin a phrase), as the title might seem to imply. At best its a gentle introduction to the subject, to be followed up by a more substantial book or books later.

Comments: Don't let the 'simplicity' of this booklet deceive you. The sections are very well organized in the perfect progression to reduce the complexity of your life and boil it down to what you really want.
My favorite section is "Get Rid of Your Tolerations". It's amazing how much stuff I tend to put up with. I didn't know how much energy this stuff drained until I started getting rid of them.
Take your time and really try these activities. It's like having your own little pocket coach.

Comments: I gave this book to a friend for her birthday in August. She was in transition looking to find a job and set goals for the future. Her Christmas card to me told me that she began at the beginning of the book, followed the exercises and realized how much her life was a mass of tolerations. She felt that the book gave her the ideas and the impetus to get rid of the things causing stress, define what she wanted and helped her discover how she really wanted she life to be. Thanks.

Simplify Your Life and Get More Out of It!
ASIN: 0842358978

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: Real-world help for the overloaded life
Comments: I've picked up other books on simplifying your life, but they usually look terribly complicated, dealing only with the surface busyness. But Norm's book uses thought-provoking questions and exercises that really make you stop and consider your current course and your desired course, as well as practical helps to get from A to B. He breaks life down into six areas of potential clutter: pace, expectations, activities, possessions, relationships, and spiritual lives; and spends two chapters on each subject. If you know you need help in certain areas, but others are in pretty good shape, then you can use and skip chapters as necessary. The author never really says, "You should do this and stop doing this." he just asks the right questions to get you thinking about what you're doing and why, and how you might "do" life differently, all the while letting you take into consideration what works best for your personality, goals, etc. No cookie-cutter solutions here! (My only complaint: I would have liked more personal stories about the author's journey toward a simpler life. And Norm! -- you just look a little too happy on the cover!) Helpful, practical, down-to-earth. Get it, and get more out of your life.
