Becoming Vegan: The Complete Guide to Adopting a Healthy Plant-Based Diet
ASIN: 1570671036

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: "Must Read" for V-People and Anyone Considering a New Diet
Comments: I just read Brenda Davis' and Vesanto Melina's new book "Becoming Vegan" and am thoroughly impressed with the material and its presentation.
The authors did a much more rigorous job of researching and presenting the current scientific data, presenting both the pro and contrary findings than in earlier works. I found the directness refreshing in comparison to some of the less scientific and more evangelistic writings that have been published.
Highlights are:
-A unique and thought-provoking look at the relationship between diet and chronic disease and the protective effects of vegan diets against the leading killers.
-One of the most convincing and well researched explanations on why plant proteins are both adequate and preferable to animal protein as the major protein source for humans.
-The most comprehensive examination of dietary fat and essential fatty acids for vegans written to date.
-A thorough and practical discussion on all of the vitamins and minerals of concern to vegans, including calcium, iron and vitamin B12.
-Invaluable guidelines for people at various stages of the life cycle: pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence and the senior years.
-A detailed and thoughtful discussion on matters of weight and shape including underweight, overweight and eating disorders.
-Straight-shooting advice about vegan diets and athletic performance.
-An exceptional vegan food guide, helping you design a well-balanced vegan diet.
-A lively discussion about diplomacy and how to handle sticky situations gracefully in this non-vegan world.
I suggest this to you as a must read and something for anyone either considering or already on a vegetarian or vegan diet.
Peter Roosen.
The Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen: Meat-Free, Egg-Free, Dairy-Free Dishes from the Healthiest Place Under the Sun
ASIN: 1557883599

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: YUMMY! I am so glad I bought this!
Comments: I don't buy a lot in the way of cookbooks, but I really wanted some new ideas. I am a vegetarian, but my boyfriend and I don't like to use a lot of dairy. I love Mediterranean food and this book was exactly what I hoped for. I recently bought "Simply Vegan" by Debra Wasserman and was disappointed by the fact that most recipes were "regular" recipes and just substituted a soy product for the animal ingredient. The Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen is nothing like that. The basis for these recipes is real ingredients, not imitation meat and imitation dairy. Every recipe I have tried has been delicious. Even my meat eating friends have been satisfied by these recipes! I wish there were more cookbooks like this!
The Vegan Sourcebook
ASIN: 0737305061

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: A Vegan milestone, filled with information and inspiration
Comments: The cover-page promises that Joanne Stepaniak will tell "Everything you need to know about Vegan Ethics and Lifestyle Choices, Social Environmental and Psychological Perspectives, Household and Personal Care Products, Nutritional Guidelines, Recipes, Menus, and Substitutions, Resources, Organizations, and Publications." And it keeps every promise. The breadth of topics and issues it covers, joined with its thoughtful and penetrating review of vegan values, goals and principles, make this a milestone in books about veganism. Many books on this subject focus narrowly on eating exclusively plant foods. This creates the impression that veganism is just a regimen for people whose urgent concerns about their health lead them to adopt a strict vegetarian diet. From this narrow viewpoint, it is the choice of foods that defines and motivates veganism. While Stepaniak confirms diet as an essential element of vegan living, she holds fast to a much broader, deeper and more meaningful perspective. She presents veganism as a wide-reaching *lifestyle,* and characterizes her book as being about "living with conscience, conviction and compassion." The book is not limited to "why" a vegan lifestyle is such a benevolent force in the world. It provides an abundance of practical information on "how to" succeed in dealing with the concrete, day-to-day issues of vegan living. It deals as well with the more subtle-- and profound-- challenges of social interactions in a culture that shows little commitment to full-scale compassion for animals *or* for humans. Indeed, according to Stepaniak, vegan concerns with the alleviation of suffering and the display of gentle respect for living creatures must apply to *all* forms of sensate life... *including* our fellow humans. To hear her elaborate the principles of universal compassion in a gentle, kind voice that is totally lacking in strident, punitive and judgmental overtones, is to observe --in action-- the principles she is advocating. Her concerns for healthy, happy, gratifying living are further manifested in the chapters on food, where Virginia Messina, M.P.H., R.D. contributes an important section on vegan nutrition. Stepaniak provides menus for feeding grown-ups, teen-agers and toddlers, and offers fifty-two pages of her typically imaginative and delicious recipes. This book is a treasure-- a comprehensive source of information, inspiration and support for long-time vegans as well as for newcomers.
How It All Vegan!: Irresistible Recipes for an Animal-Free Diet
ASIN: 1551520672

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Funniest Cookbook Ever!
Comments: This pretty green and yellow book stands out because it's fun AND easy to follow AND 100% good for you. So rarely does one cookbook possess all three qualities.
This is a very #1 cookbook for someone who is just starting to explore meatless cooking. You won't find any brown, superdense lentil-and-wheat germ hippie mama casseroles here. Instead, the authors share favorite childhood recipes, fresh and easy to prepare salads and yummy desserts. Yes, vegans do eat chocolate and gorge on sushi and make filling food that sticks to your ribs. The lucky ones do, at least.
If you're serious about making a lifetime commitment to animal, earth and tummy friendly eating, it's important to have fun. You won't outlast your early twenties if you spend too much time scowling about recipes that have (gasp!) honey in them. "How it all Vegan" isn't a perfect book, but it's the only cookbook in the world that has a recipe for Fart Sandwiches.
The New Vegan Cookbook: Innovative Vegetarian Recipes Free of Dairy, Eggs, and Cholesterol
ASIN: 0811827607

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Beautiful and delicious
Comments: This is one of my favorite cookbooks. It has a nice range of recipes, from simple to more "special occasion" and the design and photography are really attractive. I have to confess that I browse through this book more than I actually cook from it. Not that I don't like the recipes, but it's the kind of cookbook I'll leaf through for inspiration when I'm looking for something new and different to eat (even if I then get lazy and just fire up another veggie burger for dinner). If you have friends or relatives who love cookbooks, this will make a great gift -- especially if you want to inspire more healthy eating!
150 Vegan Favorites: Fresh, Easy, and Incredibly Delicious Recipes You Can Enjoy Every Day
ASIN: 0761512438

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: SIMPLE RECIPES
Comments: Jay Solomon's 150 Vegan favorites is an easy to follow recipe book with recipes that taste amazing!
I would advise to lower the amount of either curry paste ( whew hot!) or the amount of chiles required... a little too spicy for us. The recipes are flavorful and you do not require "never to be found" ingredients. I am so happy I have this recipe book in my collection as I know I can rely on it for great tasting vegan recipes.
Kitchen in the Clouds: The Essential Vegan Guidebook
ASIN: 1885733348

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: If I had to own only one cookbook -- this would be it!
Comments: Kitchen in the Clouds is an exceptionally beautiful cookbook and informative resource guide on vegan living. Inviting to read, with beautiful artwork found throughout, it is simply a feast for the mind, body and soul. The author, Karen Alexander, not only provides over 200 delicious recipes full of flavor, but a new model for optimal health. It is a book that you will want to sit down and read, and re-read--her writing is eloquent and inspiring. It was a powerful reminder to me that I can consciously choose health through my every day eating choices.
Kitchen in the Clouds proves that vegan meals can be flavorful, appealing and satisfying--both my husband and six-year old son enjoy the recipes! Our family favorites include Perfect Pea Soup, Incredible Burritos, Pilgrim's Lentil Loaf, Baked Cauliflower and Chocolate Zucchini Brownies, to name a few. It's been great fun surprising our meat-eating friends with delicious meals they can't believe are vegan. It is quickly becoming the most used cookbook in my collection!
This book is a must have if you want to restore your personal health and experience a vitality you never thought possible--with a side benefit of healing the planet, too. I have many friends I have shared it with who have purchased their own personal copy. I highly recommend it!
Veggie Works Vegan Cookbook
ASIN: 0970996616

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Vegan Cooking for People Who like to eat.
Comments: Mark Rasmussen is the Stallion. This dude can cook. And I swear, there is nothing better than Veggieworks food. This is Vegan food that is not for wimps. I am a long time vegetarian, and I don't like to eat salad and steamed veggies. I want real food. This cookbook has real food. Food that will actually make you full. 'Meat' and Potatoes. I have a number of vegetarian and vegan cookbooks, and they all [stink]. They are made for old ladies and those skinny, little, starved-looking vegans who eat salad and sunflower seeds all day. Not for me. If you want 'real food for real people', buy this cookbook and make the vegan enchiladas or the meat loaf or a fat gluten steak. Or if you want to, take the easy way out and just go to Veggieworks and order the menu. Every real vegetarian should make a pilgrimage to Veggieworks at some point in their life. If you've never eaten Veggieworks, you've never experienced how good Vegan can be. And, the guys may like the waitresses, but ladies, just hope that you can get a look at the elusive Chef Mark. What a stud!
Nonna's Italian Kitchen: Delicious Homestyle Vegan Cuisine
ASIN: 1570670552

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: The Best Italian Vegan Cookbook Ever!
Comments: Bryanna has created the absolute best cookbook ever! My friend originally bought this and when she told me I should get it, I remarked "why would I need an Italian cookbook, I know how to cook vegan Italian!" I was then treated to several meals at my friend's apt. where she used Nonna's Italian Kitchen and was I wowed! I couldn't believe how delicious these recipes are and how satisfying - much better than anything I've ever had as a non-vegan! Now every year for my birthday, my friend knows what I want for my birthday meal from her- the lasagna al forno Bolognese on page 113 - to die for (or to live for really!). Buy this book - all my non-vegan friends love the dishes and can't believe it's not dairy!
Incredibly Delicious: The Vegan Paradigm Cookbook
ASIN: 0929274245

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: The Only Cookbook You Need!
Comments: Even though this book already has great reviews, I felt compelled to write and let readers know how amazing this book has been for us - we became vegans last December. Friends say, "your vegan - what do you eat?" Well, I answer - a lot more than I did before I was vegan - thanks to this cookbook's tremendous variety of quick, easy, and always delicious recipes. The authors cover all of the staples and add in a section on raw recipes (rawsome :)). We have not tried a recipe yet that was bad - and we have tried many! A couple of favorites are the polenta with cashew pesto and vegetables and the baked ziti with sietan. All recipes we have tried take less than an hour to make - and most much less! The authors go over equipment, new ingredients, where to buy (including on-line), and the like. They even have a section on animal based ingredients that you may not know about - we have become expert label readers! All in all, this is a great purchase - after about 6 months we have a worn in cookbook, a very diverse spice shelf, and confidence that being vegan is bliss! The best cookbook you will own.
P.S. Many recipes call for a blender - usually in weird ways - that end up making great textures!
Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating, Revised Edition
ASIN: 0935526870

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: this is an excellent summary of why to become a vegan
Comments: I had just finished Diet For a New America, by John Robbins before I read Vegan. John Robbins book is very detailed and in-depth while Vegan is a more recent, summarized version of the same issues. If you are short on time and want a concise summary, Vegan is the book for you. If you have more time, I'd advocate John Robbins' book, too.
Even if you have no interest in becoming vegan or vegetarian, it still wouldn't hurt to read this. If you choose to eat meat, you should have all the information that's out there. It also will help you understand any vegetarian friends/acquaintances you have.
Very Vegetarian
ASIN: 1558539522

Summary: A super book for vegans, vegetarians and weight watchers!
Comments: This book is beautifully presented with a saffron cover and amazing pictures that will make your mouth water. I tried the Sweet potato spicy soup and it was mmm mmm good! I never thought sweet potatoes would taste so good. There is a great section on vegan desserts. I have not tried them yet but they seem super. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to be healthy, lose weight, loves to cook or is a vegetarian.
The Peta Celebrity Vegan Cookbook
ASIN: 1590560272

Summary: Excellent

Simply Vegan: Quick Vegetarian Meals
ASIN: 0931411203

Customer's Rating: 3
Summary: with a quick fix it'll do
Comments: While I was initially very excited about this book, I found that a lot of the recipes needed some help in the taste direction. It was one of my first vegan cookbooks, and after 7 years as a vegan, I know that we can do better than this. Some things in it I still use, like the veggie patties, but even those I had to add some salt, spices and garlic to get them to taste as delicious as I'd like (always my goal). Plenty of other books will give you recipes that need less tampering and more YUM. For die-hards only, as part of our collective veggie-dues.
Being Vegan
ASIN: 0737303239

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Highly Recommended
Comments: I'm a big fan of Joanne Stepaniak and have followed her writings for years. I'm amazed at her remarkable ability to consistently produce groundbreaking work. Just when you think Joanne couldn't possibly come up with new ways of addressing conventional perspectives, she does it again. She possesses clarity of purpose and is a heartfelt advocate of compassionate living. I own a copy of each of her titles including Being Vegan, one of her latest offerings. I must admit that initially I was a bit skeptical about purchasing Being Vegan, considering that I've lived as a vegan for nearly twenty years and thought I'd seen and heard it all. The skepticism was short lived. As I started reading, I realized that as with her previous titles, Joanne had written another tour de force. The book's format is ingenious and engaging. It's a question and answer format based on the thousands of questions she has received from around the world via her popular Web site Grassroots Veganism and her award winning on-line advice column. I was thrilled and encouraged by the notion that veganism literally crosses cultural and geographical boundaries and exists in parts of the world that one would least expect. In addition, it's rather obvious that Joanne spent countless hours on research and tailoring her thoughtful answers to suit the individual. Her thoroughness and sensitivity are inspiring. I was also very impressed with the ambitious scope of Being Vegan. The entire vegan life cycle is addressed including philosophy, relationships, ethical practice, and vegan practice and food. Finally, this book is not only for "new" vegans and their non-vegan relatives and friends. I'm sure that other "old-timers" like me will find Being Vegan as thought-provoking and sensible as I did. Highly recommended.
Vegan Vittles: Recipes Inspired by the Critters of Farm Sanctuary
ASIN: 1570670250

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: The BEST All-Around Vegan Cookbook!
Comments: Vegan Vittles is a timeless treasure jam-packed with vegan staples for every meal, purpose, and taste. It contains countless recipe classics such as the author's famous Muffins That Taste Like Donuts (they really do!), Crock Cheese (you won't believe how much this tastes like cheddar!), Incredible Almond Creme Cheese (truly incredible!), Hungarian Mushroom Soup, Cheddary Cheese Soup, Caesar Dressing, Southern-Fried Tofu, and Lemon Date Squares. But there's so much more -- Seitan Salami, several delicious nut and rice milks, Phenomenal French Toast, Eggless Omelets, "Buttermilk" Biscuits, Pecan Sticky Buns, Date and Nut Bread, Carrot Butter, Edna's Peach Kuchen, and amazing dips, soups, stews, muffins, breads, gravies, salads, dressings, cakes, frostings, pies, "ice creams," and cookies.
What sets this book apart? The recipes are easy, delicious, and they work. They have impressed vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores alike, and are perfect for those people who say they could never give up meat, dairy, or eggs. What's even better is that all these healthy recipes are neatly packaged in a conveniently-sized volume that includes a concise nutrition section (written by Suzanne Havala, RD), practical information on veganism, endearing animal photos, thought-provoking twists on common sayings (veganisms), and tips on replacing animal products in traditional recipes. Best of all, the price is very reasonable, so you can treat yourself (and your friends and family) to some of the finest vegan recipes this side of the back-forty.
The Vegetarian Traveler: Where to Stay If You're Vegetarian, Vegan, Environmentally Sensitive
ASIN: 0943914795

Customer's Rating: 3
Summary: Good as far as it goes, but very limiting
Comments: The ideal vegetarian travel book has yet to be written. Such books seem to fall into two camps: The destination-oriented guide (these are places you can eat, sleep, etc. if you are vegetarian or vegan), and the broad guidebook/phrase book (e.g., a set of flashcards for vegetarians and vegans covering major languages; a phrase book by the same name as this book by a different author; a Vegan phrase book that may only be available in the UK; etc.). Each of these types has its limitations. This book is one of the former.
The Vegetarian Traveler does a good job of selecting some places for vegetarians, vegans, and what the authors call "the environmentally sensitive" to stay and eat. There is definitely a need for this kind of book, and the authors have included a wide range of options. However, the geographical range of the book is very limited (which, to be fair to the authors, may be a reflection on where vegetarians are welcome more than anything else). Most of the listings are in North America and the British Isles, and the remainder of the globe gets cursory treatment. (Having just returned from Australia, I can testify that there are more vegetarian-oriented places in heaven and earth than the authors dream of in their book philosophy.) The book is also limiting in the sense that, if you want to stay/eat somewhere not listed or in a region not covered, you are your own.
The bottom line is that, if you plan on traveling in the areas that get the most coverage here, AND if you want to stay in a place that has been totally pre-screened for vegetarian/vegan/environmental criteria, then this book is a worthwhile purchase, at least as a basic reference. If not, it probably isn't. I would add that the book seems to be several years old, so you should probably plan on supplementing/verifying the information via the several web sites devoted to this topic or through other means. I wonder if the authors plan on issuing a new (and hopefully more comprehensive) edition?
Vegan Cooking For One
ASIN: 0722539231

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: The best vegan cookbook you will ever own...
Comments: I have recently become vegan and this is the first cookbook I bought. It has incredible recipes that are so easy to follow, and incredibly delicious. To counter the previous review, I either use a non-stick pan or use cooking spray when oil is asked for. What I don't like about other cookbooks is that it is hard to reduce servings from 4-6 servings to 1 or 2, rather, it is much easier to double or triple one when you have company. I also love that the author has a no waste attitude, meaning what you buy on the shopping list each week is used up THAT week. I hate that normal cookbooks will ask for a teaspoon of something you will end up throwing away when it goes bad in the fridge. My boyfriend loves this cookbook so much, he claims that what I cook is above restaurant quality, and there is such variety in the book of tastes and styles of cooking. I recommend this cookbook to any vegan, whether newly vegan or someone who wants a little more variety. Try the indonesian noodles with peanut sauce or the tofu with cashews and vegetables to start, you will be hooked.
Cooking With Peta: Great Vegan Recipes for a Compassionate Kitchen
ASIN: 1570670447

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Excellent For People Wanting to Become Vegan!
Comments: I recently purchased this book because I was curious about the vegan lifestyle. I had been a meat and dairy eater all of my life, but this would be a big change for me. When the cookbook came in the mail, I was quick to open it and get going.
The "Basics" section was a great way to get started. I appreciated the fact that this book actually helps you get started in this lifestyle. I cooked-up the "beefless" stew, and found it to be wonderful. From there, I went on to the two chicken and rice dishes that are included in the basics section. Needless to say, I was confused that there was a recipe in this book that called for chicken, but I forged ahead anyway. I'm glad I did, too! The chicken dishes were outstanding!
From there, I decided to go on to entertaining. Luckily, it was close to Thanksgiving and most of my guests would be expecting a turkey dinner. Not only was there a wonderful tofu turkey meal listed in the cookbook, but a wonderful real turkey meal as well! I decided to use the recipe that called for real turkey and I was amazed! People actually like to eat meat! Thankfully, this cookbook delivers! I had also decided to cook up the beef dishes that were listed and found that, to my utter surprize, beef is in fashion now!
Thank you, PETA, for understanding that we need balance in our lives, and real meat is one way to get it.
Vegan Nutrition: Pure and Simple
ASIN: 0929274237

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: A much-needed learned physician's view of vegan eating
Comments: I find this book to be such a refreshing break from the typical diet drivel put out by "big-name" physicians like Atkins. Dr. Klaper knows his nutrition, knows his medicine, and even knows his foods (the recipes are excellent.) With his kind heart, he shares the best way to save yours.
Veggie Lovers Cook Book
ASIN: 0914846779

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: simple pleasures
Comments: I purchased this book because of its simplicity. You do not have to stock up on expensive hard-to-find ingredients to make the recipes. The food for the most part is not 'gourmet' but it is tasty and heart-warming. The design of the book itself is nice. The fonts are of a decent size- quite readable without the stupid pretentious cutesy style that many vegetarian cookbooks use. There is a nutrition breakdown for each recipe giving calories, protein, carbs, fat, sodium and fiber.
In addition the book is bound so that you can lay it open and it stays flat. Very nice.
I would give this book 5 stars, except that it does call for name brand items here and there. It's no big deal, I can simply substitute a different soy cheese, or use my own spice mixture, but it's annoying in its own little way.
Over all, I'd have to say that I am impressed with this cookbook for the way it makes eating vegan accessible to people who are concerned about their nutritional intakes and want to be certain they're getting plenty of protein and not too much salt, etc.
The Accidental Vegan
ASIN: 1580910793

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Good Cooking
Comments: A good basic addition to my vegan cookbook collection. The recipes in this collection are very open ended... which is terrific if you are the type of cook who likes to make your own additions and adjustments as you cook. I think it may be harder to use for someone who is either a new vegan or does not cook a lot. My family has been very pleased over all with the recipes. She offers some wonderful dips in the first section which make healthy and wonderful snacks for the kids. Try the stuffed mushrooms or the walnut/veggie spread! Wonderful and so incredibly easy to prepare.
