Comments: I really love the Chic Simple books ... I find the photographs, text and lay out to be really inspirational and compelling on a daily basis i.e. we all have to get dressed each day, and these books (especially "What Should I Wear?" - my real favourite) have made it more fun for me to wear, and buy, my clothes and accessories. There is one matter about this new book which has disappointed me in only a small way, and that is that the authors have chosen to use certain photos and text from older books in this, their new book. I dislike paying for the same content twice. I also had very high hopes for this new book, the first new 'big' fashion/wardbrobe-planning book by these authors for some years now, and was a bit cheesed off to find the same images/text, apparently recycled. It's just a small thing, but it seems to me to be a little lazy on their part. That said, I'm still a fan of the book, and wish I'd had it years ago when I started my first job (I wear suits for work and this book really focuses on that look and how to 'polish' it or expand upon it). This would be a great book for a recent graduate, or for the library of a corporate employer looking for a simple yet thorough and elegant style guide for their staff.
New Women's Dress for Success
ASIN: 0446672238

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Let Go of Fashion and Sex Appeal
Comments: I read the first edition of this book twenty years ago. What struck me then was Malloy's research findings about fashion and sex appeal. Ladies, fashion fails you! Sex appeal gets you into the bedroom, but keeps you out of the boardroom.
Yes, Malloy's advice is based on research. He has surveyed hundreds of thousands of people on "which woman is more successful?" He shows people pictures of "twins" which are really the same woman dressed in different ways. He reports on the types of outfits, fabrics, patterns, accessories, hair styles, jewelry, and even colors that say "success" to people. He gives step by step tips on how to shop for "success" items even on a college student's budget.
This new version IS updated. Malloy himself says "Everything has changed" since he researched and wrote this second book. His advice about business casual - avoid it if you can - is right on for professional women. We have a hard enough time being recognized as professionals in suits, let alone if everyone is in Dockers and company logo polo shirts! He gives tips on how to stand out favorably even in today's polo shirt land.
Casual Power:: How to Power Up Your Nonverbal Communication and Dress Down for Success
ASIN: 1880092484

Customer's Rating: 4
Summary: A must read for the modern business world
Comments: Bought the book for my wife, read the book for myself. I work in the field for a company that allows "business casual dress" for its field employees, and was not sure of what that ment. Sherry's book is both informative and very interesting. Sherry is a little conservative with some things, such as the wearing of short sleeve "dress" shirts, she is against it. I do understand her view, but don't agree completely. In general though her opionions and suggestions are on the mark. Both my wife and I have gotten our monies worth. I recommend this book as a good starting point on the journey of "business casual Friday" or "business casual workplace".
John T. Molloy's New Dress for Success
ASIN: 0446385522

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: The Bible for certain professionals
Comments: While the book is dated, most of the information is timeless and very useful. All politicians and trial lawyers MUST read this book if they hope to be successful, since the voting public and juries are made up of the people Molloy researched. Other executives, include those giving press briefings, dealing with reporters, and some sales professionals should study this book carefully.
However, the book has its problems. It is in need of updating for information regarding casual dress. Many firms, including the old guard firms, are going business casual. Sales professionals are meeting customers in business casual dress. While the book speaks of the casual wardrobe, it assumes you are on the golf course, for example. My advice: buy this book if you deal with the public at all. If you are in a back office working on the network server for 12 hours a day and your boss doesn't care what (or if) you wear, go buy a couple of t-shirts instead.
Your Executive Image: How to Look Your Best and Project Success for Men and Women
ASIN: 1580621783

Customer's Rating: 1
Summary: Lacking depth
Comments: I am a firm believer in ongoing personal development, so I have continued to read and grow my perspective. Your Executive Image looked interesting because of attention given to clothing, space, gestures, etc...
Then I read it. Not all of it, but as much as I could before I realized this was a waste of time. For instance, the entire posture chapter could have been replaced with a single line: Posture is important as it conveys confidence or insecurity... The rest of the chapter reinforced this one point. Twenty minutes of time for a thirty-second concept. In some chapters, I didn't even see a worthwhile thirty-second concept (like the chapter on space).
Money could have been better spent elsewhere.

Best Impressions: How to Gain Professionalism, Promotion and Profit
ASIN: 0965574237

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: A very helpful book...
Comments: Thank you for helping me to advance professionally in my career as an Administrative Assistant. I have been searching for a way to gain respect from my Directors. I have tried many things to gain respect I became more organized, learned to improve my communication style and to act more professional. However, something was still missing. It was the way I dressed and I did not realize it until I had the opportunity to speak with Dawn and read her book.
Prior to reading the book, I would look through clothing catalogs and find really cute clothes. They may have been cute to me but they were not professional. I was so thrilled and excited about the tips you gave me to "professionalize" my wardrobe because of the upbeat and positive way you presented the information. Immediately, I began to change the way I dressed and soon I began to reap the results I wanted. The Directors began to listen to me, I was handed high profile projects and people took notice of me and have complimented me on my new look. Even more important, I feel more positive at work and can concentrate on getting my job done no matter what the world hands me that day.

Making Peace With the Things in Your Life: Why Your Papers, Books, Clothes, and Other Possessions Keep Overwhelming You and What to Do About It
ASIN: 0312284888

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: A fresh perspective on the things/Things in your life!
Comments: As Editor-in-Chief of a magazine about getting and staying organized, I read a lot of books on organizing to find good writers. But sometimes books get repetitive. When I read Making Peace with the Things in Your Life, I just had to email the author. What a fresh perspective! This book helps you to differentiate between the things in your life and the Things in your life (when you buy it, you will really get this point). It also helps you to understand the meanings you attribute to your stuff. Not only was there value in this book from my perspective as an editor (I asked her to write an article for the magazine), but I also found gems that helped me to stop and think about my own possessions and those of my family members. For example, I was able to understand why my daughter's room was swamped with paper by examining the meanings she attached to each and every sheet. Soon I was able to help her see the difference between things and Things, and that's just one success story. I loved this book and highly recommend it to anyone, whether you are organized, not so organized, or somewhere in between.

Dressing the Man: The Art of Permanent Fashion
ASIN: 0060191449

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Flusser's Back!
Comments: It is past time for a new Flusser. Earlier this year I tried visiting half a dozen of the New York specialty stores profiled in "Style and the Man" only to find that most of them had relocated. Even Flusser's own shop had moved out of Saks Fifth Avenue and was nowhere to be found in Manhattan.
Fortunately he's been busy. "Dressing the Man" is a major update of his previous material with new information and fine visuals of dandies past. Think of it as Roetzel's book from an American perspective, with more emphasis on dressing well and less on where to buy shoes.
The emphasis is on dress up - there's little or nothing on outerwear, sportswear or nightwear for example - but that's covered as impeccably as one of Flusser's seven fold ties. In addition to the chapters on design and fit that readers of his previous books have come to expect, there's new material on pattern coordination, a section on choosing colors that work for your complexion, and more than most people would have thought possible on how to match socks.
Now if only there's a new store for my next trip to New York.

Dress Smart Men: Wardrobes That Win in the New Workplace (Chic Simple)
ASIN: 0446530433
Men's Wardrobe (Chic Simple)
ASIN: 0679445765

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: A timeless classic, like the clothes it describes
Comments: This book is *the* reference guide for the man pursuing that elusive, important goal that separates a real man out from the philistines around him: the quest for the perfect, stylish wardrobe.
This book was given to me as a 21st birthday present, which was shortly before I finished university, and I have found it to be an invaluable resource in building a good wardrobe and in discovering a good sense of style as I've set out to forge my own way in the 'real' world.
The book presents a very detailed examination of classic men's fashions in various aspects of life and their corresponding wardrobes: work, leisure, sport, winter, summer, accessories, ties, cufflinks - and so on. This book gives you an insight into what defines the classic fashion in each of these areas and gives some tips and general rules about how you should construct your wardrobe in each of them.
The book is also very 'cool' - it is very well presented with lots of great photos and illustrations. The variety of classic quotes from books, films, etc that are used to illustrate various points work really well and help to maintain your interest and the sense of coolness about the book as well.
It should be noted that this book is not an exhaustive guide to what is fashionable, and is almost quite the opposite. Rather than focusing on clothes or wardrobes that are fashionable, this book presents only those things that are never likely to go out of fashion (like the classic two or three button, black or dark blue suit, or a well-made trenchcoat). So, don't buy this if you're looking for an analysis of the latest in men's fashions, but do buy it of you are into timeless classics and don't plan ever to go out of style.
This would also make a good companion piece to other books on "how to be a man", and in fact it does address this question in part as well.
Costuming from the Hip
ASIN: 0967817005

Customer's Rating: 5
Summary: Fantastic book!
Comments: This is a TERRIFIC book for bellydancers who are starting to explore the world of costume-making for their craft. Even if you can barely sew at all (like me) this book gives you enough information for you to build a multitude of costumes. The drawings show how several different pieces can be re-combined, and multiple variations on a theme.
The binding was purposefully chosen to permit the costumer to lay the book flat (I only wish more cookbooks used this idea!); mine has been laid flat, folded over, and abused in dozens of different ways and has never lost a single page. Bad bindings are easily replaced by the publisher if you send a faulty one back.
This is a PERFECT book for folks on a budget who are trying to achieve an expensive look without breaking their wallet as well; it's affordably priced and it covers inexpensive techniques that look like a fortune. I've frequently referred back to this book while creating new outfits.
